Wright (wrightc@dtcweb.com) ********************************************************************** PR Newswire #1256 Serenity Systems Offers Free PCs to Participating Businesses Serenity Systems (http://www.Serenity-Systems.com), a technology startup in north Texas, has taken the step that everyone knew had to happen. They are offering "free PCs" to customers who are users of their services. Recently some organizations have developed programs to give PCs to consumers, but this seems to be the first national program to provide PCs to businesses. And the company is not limiting the number of PCs required by participating organizations. However, a business must sign up for a PC desktop services management contract. According to Bob St.John, Director of New Business Development with the company, "People in our industry appreciate that the cost of acquiring a PC is small compared to the total cost of ownership. That inolves managing users, recovering from failures, and this year the biggest emphasis is on deploying new software to users, a very expensive procedure. "Software deployment is being driven by Y2K concerns, but the fact is software changes and upgrades have become such a recurring task that there really is no let up to the problem in sight. And Y2K requires hardware and software which both comply with Y2K standards. Our services are directed at those Total Cost of Ownership issues. Frankly, it costs less to provide the PC than to bring the wide range existing systems a company may have into Y2K compliance." Serenity Systems provides hardware, software and services directed at managing any or all tasks associated with business PCs. This is the ultimate step in the "outsourcing" trend of the '90s which saw companies retaining outside service organizations to install and manage their internal computing environment. In addition to Managed PC Client Systems, Serenity Systems is also Computing Telephony Integration vendor, supplying commercial voice mail and voice response systems. "Our direction this year is to integrate the business PC and the business telephone, two business tools you tend to find on every desk, but which tend to exist as parallel universes. The biggest favor we could do for computers users is let their phones by managed by the PCs which can provide more function at less cost." said St.John ------------------------------------------- MODERATOR'S NOTE: Bob St. John touches on this idea from a different perspective in the current issue of OS/2 e-Zine!
