Wright (wrightc@dtcweb.com) ********************************************************************** I have updated the MOTD on Hobbes in response to some user email regarding some recent *ahem* announcements on here. It follows: There has been some confusion over my most recent message. Namely, many sites have decided that they would announce, based on my SPECULATION, that they were going to become THE official mirror of Hobbes, and that they would fund it based on banner advertisements and the like. This is unacceptable. My rationale for GPLing the source was so that anyone who didn't like the choice of official mirror could start their own and hope they do better. At this point I'm definitely going to add in a further restrictive clause: a site running Hobbes-Engine may not use banner advertisements or other obtrusive means of collecting funds. I would prefer that a mirror site only fund the site by giving users an actual VALUABLE service, such as selling 6-CD sets of the archive. The site I'm most strongly considering as the official mirror has promised me that they would keep Hobbes completely free. However, promises and times change, and so I'm not completely trusting of this statement forever and ever, hence why the source would be under the GPL. (For those who don't know, the GPL requires that any derivative code be made available - so when this site modifies the code for their own uses, they have to make their modifications available.) The recent announcement from Pepper Head is not false, but is incredibly misleading, as it implies that they have gotten my blessing in becoming the new "official" Hobbes. I have never communicated with anyone representing Pepper Head, nor do I condone their actions in claiming the hobbes.org domain. There is no copyright over the name Hobbes (it's just the name of the machine the archive happens to be on), and so I have no legal means of removing the domain from their control. Until I make a solid announcement regarding an official mirror or course of action, NO announcement of someone else's should be taken as an official word from me. One thing I should add: My statements are mine, and not those of my (current) employer, NMSU, nor are they those of my superior, Dave Rocks, who has the final say regarding Hobbes. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: I had, in fact, received a proposition from Pepperhead, this morning, but after they made their announcement, and I immediately declined. I have fixed the archive news (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-browse?dir=/) accordingly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe, unsubscribe, or for more information on WarpCast, visit: http://www.warpcast.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------
