I've done a port of gphoto, the GNU digital camera image transfer
program.

The linux version supports over 150 camera models, of 19 different
makes.

The only problem is that I only have one digital camera, a Sony
DSC-F1, this camera works perfectly well with the application. The
goal however is of course to have many more cameras supported.
Therefore if you own a camera and it's listed on the site, please
contact me so you could help me out with testing the application

This app requires XFree86/2.
