[WarpCast] VMware OS/2 Support Followup - 4/27/00 |
Network Trace for OS/2 - Turn any OS/2 machine into a network probe. - Take a trace on any segment in the network, in minutes. - A software-only, hardware-independent implementation. http://www.goldencode.com/ntrace.html ********************************************************************* Source: Dirk Terrell (terrell@boulder.swri.edu) Moderator: Trevor Smith (feedback@warpcast.com) ------------------------------------------------------- I sent a message to the VMware people asking if they might consider making it available as a "not supported" version. This is the response I got. It's really a shame that they have chosen not to press forward with OS/2 support. VMware provides a nice way of being able to use OS/2 on machines without the hassle of (a) having to repartition disks and (b) reboot to get to other operating systems. They haven't given a reason as to why they decided not to proceed. They have an announcement on the main page of their web site (http://www.vmware.com) about having signed an OEM agreement with Microsoft to provide Windows preinstalled in virtual machines. Given the kinds of MS tactics that surfaced during the anti-trust trial, one has to wonder about the timing of all this... ==================BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE================== From: "Eric Horschman"Subject: Re: VMware User Survey Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 11:03:48 -0700 Dirk, Thank you for your support, but we are withdrawing our OS/2 experimental release. Releasing OS/2 as an unsupported guest OS was considered, but we did not feel that our OS/2 guest support was at the same quality level as other guest OSs and we did not want that to reflect badly on our product.
