Java 1.1.8 is updated - Jan.07.2000:
ftp://ncc.hursley.ibm.com/pub/java/fixes/os2/11/118
Hi,
I am the author of the file manager DirMaster for OS/2. In case you have not
heard about DirMaster, the product is a Directory Opus (Amiga) and Norton Commander
inspired file manager. First released in 1993 work on DirMaster ceased in late 1995.
Since then I have had countless requests to add features, do bug fixes etc. On December
31. I released a Y2K compliant version to ensure that the DirMaster users out there
could keep using DirMaster.
The reason for this post is that I am planning to open the source, either through
the GPL or some other license. If anyone is interrested in taking over the maintaining
and coordination of updates to the source please contact me by email.
Best wishes.

Found the following on comp.os.os2.apps from Trevor Hemsley. He has compiled
a fixed DLL for the last publicly available version of Pronews/2 to fix several
Year 2000 problems.
----------------------------------
The replacement DLL is now up on ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/pn2_15b1_y2k_dll.zip
Read the readme.1st file please!
It disables the Spell Checker since I don't have the source for that.
Problems fixed by the replacement DLL
This replacement DLL is for the version of ProNews/2 that's in ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/news/reader/pn2_15b1.zip
ONLY.
Apologies but the 1Kb patch file is not yet working (now thinks it's 1900 or
1970 )-:)

FTP Restart
The FTP Restart feature allows your browser to request only that portion of the
file that was not received, if your connection is disrupted during the download
process. This is useful when downloading "large" files like some that
are available from the Developer Connection. If FTP Restart is available, only the
portion of the file that was not received is sent by the FTP server when the connection
is reestablished.
FTP Restart must be supported on both ends (server and client) of the FTP connection
in order for it to be enabled for a given download. Most Internet FTP servers today,
including the IBM Developer Connection FTP servers, do support this feature. Therefore,
the more important consideration is whether the feature is supported by your Web
browser. Current versions of the most popular browsers (Netscape Navigator 4.0 or
higher and Internet Explorer 4.0) do support this feature.
When this feature is available, the FTP client and server periodically exchange
information describing the current position within the file being transferred. If
the FTP connection is broken before the transfer completes, the client and server
resume from the most recent file position that was successfully transferred when
the connection is reestablished.
Note to Users of Netscape Navigator 4.0:
Netscape Navigator 4.03 supports FTP Restart provided the size of the file being
downloaded fits within the current "Memory Cache" limit. Because the maximum
Memory Cache is 99,999 KB, files larger than approximately 100 MB cannot currently
use this feature.
To use this feature when downloading a large file, adjust your Memory Cache settings.

Fixkit #2 for Object Desktop 2.0 for OS/2 was released today at Stardock:
The update addresses a number of minor issues brought up by customers over the
course of the past year.
Object Desktop is a desktop environment designed to take advantage of the power
of OS/2's Workplace Shell.
Object Desktop 2.0 adds Internet features to the shell, Internet monitoring to
Control Center, and multiple OS "personalities" in the form of look and
feel changing. It has won the Readers' Choice Award for best enhancement on OS/2
e-Zine! every year the award has been given.
I've been invited to evaluate the upcoming Pre-Beta OS/2 guest client software
from VMware on a Linux host machine. According to VMware's web site - http://VMware.com,
from a Linux or nt host machine you can have multiple virtual machines running at
the same time on your desktop. No rebooting is necessary to switch between Linux,
win??, or soon OS/2. They did not have a specific time frame for release of the
OS/2 guest, but I'm sure that any interest in their product expressed by members
of the OS/2 community would help spur them onward.

On the news corner of the OS/2 BBS www.os2bbs.com I found this news:
Massimo Sangriso reports massimo@dinosoft.it that KRFTech (http://www.krftech.com/)
has a product line "which automates and simplifies writing PCI / cPCI / USB
/ ISA / EISA device drivers for Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, CE, Linux Solaris and
OS/2." It looks like their OS/2 version is in beta, and you must contact them
for more info.
News on generic WIN/OS2 driver and in the future maybe DOS!
Why this long subject line? At the moment you may call this driver the generic
WIN-OS/2 driver simply because DOS support is not sure yet! It looks good however.
Have you only got sound in normal OS/2 (on your OS/2 Desktop) but is WIN-OS/2
silent? This driver will be your solution (in many cases). It may not be so good
as a native driver from the manufactor but the difference in performance is quite
small. It does not matter if you have a MCA, PCI, ISA or PCMCIA sound card, in many
cases it will work! For more info how it works (and download it!) look on:
http://home.wxs.nl/~rwklein/index.htm
or
when you can't view the other page.
At this moment WAVE in and WAVE out under WIN-OS/2 is working quite well and
MIDI support is getting along quite well. John is already able to play a MIDI file.
There MAY be a release this month. After WIN-OS/2 support works well, Soundblaster
support will added (it is quite a job!). If this will work is not certain!
The driver that you can now download from my site will not crash your system
but it has a small bug! When you have video for Windows installed WIN-OS/2 will
start up with an error in winshld.exe. If this happens with all OS/2 configurations
is not known. The problem can be solved by placing a ; in front of this line: "WaveMapper=MSACM.DRV"
in your system.ini. In the next release this will be fixed (we hope).
Until now about 650 people have downloaded the driver from my site. But not many
people have sent their comments! We wan't to hear from you! Send your positive comment,
suggestions or problems to:
To put one thing straigt, I (Roderick Klein) did not do any programming, John
Gow did (jag12@leicester.ac.uk).
Oh yes, this driver is freeware.

is that Emsrv.exe doesn't run under Aurora, but they are going to resolve this problem
soon.
Hello Martin,
The following has been created for you: 1FNJDFR: EMSRV:OS2 - Would like EMSRV to work on OS/2 4.5 (Aurora)
This is a known problem and plans are that this will be fixed in the next release of EMSRV 6.24. The current plan is to have EMSRV 6.24 sometime during the first of 2000 (January).

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for Dragen FTP beta testing. I
have received 119 emails from people who are interested in helping to bring Dragen
FTP to the OS/2 community.
I have a short list of items that I want to clean up before releasing the Dragen
beta. From the people who have responded, I will select a smaller number who I will
ask to review the core code application. After this group has reported and I have
made adjustments based upon their input, I will release a shareware beta to everyone
who has responded to my request for assistance.
Here are some things that Dragen can do:
After the rollover to year 2000 we want to discover how OS/2 users made out with
this problem.
Eicon is a company producing high-quality communications cards. They produce
ISA, PCI and PC Card a.k.a PCMCIA ISDN cards (see http://www.eicon.com/DIVApro2/default.htm
and http://www.eicon.com/DIVAprpc/default.htm)
as well as some server cards for dialin servers.
It seems that all these cards are now supported under OS/2 ! Take a look at:
http://www.eicon.com/dios2/default.htm
Eicon is likely the first ISDN PC Card adapter to support OS/2.
Dear Warpstockers,
As chair of Warpstock, Inc. I wanted to inform everyone of the progress being
made on Warpstock 2000. Originally, the Warpstock Board wanted to announce the location
of Warpstock 2000 on January 1, 2000. Due to the fact we did not receive any satisfactory
bids, this announcement will be delayed until January 31, 2000.
The current plans for Warpstock 2000 have the board soliciting volunteers for
the event team and being the actual sponsoring group. So if you're in the mood to
make a difference for Warpstock 2000, please contact me (pethmon@hethmon.com). In
the meantime, the board has narrowed down the location to three choices: Philadelphia,
Pennsylvannia, Orlando, Florida and Los Angeles, California.
We would like to ask you for your input in making this decision. Please visit
the Warpstock website (http://www.warpstock.org/2000/location.html)
and choose your favorite. Your input will be one of the factors in deciding where
Warpstock 2000 will be held.
Thanks,
Paul Hethmon
Chair

Thought I'd pass this on in case anyone may find it useful. This is one of only
two Java apps I have ever registered. This is a stock market quote tracking application
that works with several stock quote providers, including Yahoo and Datek. It runs
well under OS/2's Java and includes a foreign exchange module and a portfolio management.

A new release of the QG is available at:
http://www.aparima.com/quote/download.html
2000-01-04 QuoteGrabber 2.0-BETA14 release.
The QuoteGrabber is now free software, released under the GPLv2. It means is that you can freely copy and distribute it, however if you modify it and wish to distribute the resulting software you must make the modified sources available to the community under the same license. Separate commercial license agreements which don't carry this source code clause are still possible.
The full source code for the QuoteGrabber is available at:
http://www.aparima.com/quote/classes/qg2src.zip
Releasing the QG as open-source software is done with the objective of letting its users/developers improve and extend the software. More data providers should be supported, more bugs should be found and new features added faster. Further, the QG's future is now better guaranteed because it doesn't rest on the fate of a single company or developer.
From now on QG development will be organized on the quotegrabber-dev@apartia.ch mailing list.
Changes summary:
- No more installers: the QG is now released in the JAR format, a 400K file containing everything necessary to run the QG on a Java2 platform (aka Java-1.2.2).
- A developer's mailing list is open for subscriptions at quotegrabber-dev-request@apartia.ch. Send the word "subscribe" in the subject of your message.
- A CVS server will soon be setup for collaboration on the QG source code. Initially the mailing list will be the main development tool.
You can perform a quick upgrade of your QG version only by downloading and replacing the qg2.jar file in your installation. It is available at:
http://www.aparima.com/quote/classes/qg2.jar
Additionally, if you have the Sun Java2 JRE installed you need only this file. Put it on your desktop and double-click to launch the QG.

A new millennium, and a new version of the DFSee utility. :-) I just released
version 3.13 today, 02-01-2000.
The most important updates in the last few versions are:
For those of you that don't know DFSee yet, DFSee is an FDISK, display, analysis
and recovery tool for disks and filesystems.
Because of the targeted use for DFSee it is a command-line and text-only utility
(no GUI). At the moment an OS/2, Win-NT and DOS version exist.
I would very much like to hear about experiences you have with DFSee, either
positive or negative.
You can get DFSee from the following sites:
http://www.fsys.demon.nl
http://fsys.dhs.org
ftp://fsys.dhs.org/pub/dfsee
With some delay, it will be on HOBBES as well...
