HW: Belkin F5D6020 802.11b PCMCIA FREE after rebate

20 Nov 2004 20:59:50

From: Lewis G Rosenthal

[Moderator note: The following is forwarded from the OS/2-Wireless mailing
list. This is probably only of interest to U.S. subscribers as it appears
they won't ship outside the U.S., but it appears to be a good deal if you
need a wireless PCMCIA card with OS/2-eCS support. The rebate is only
valid through 12/05/2004. I have no connection to Microcenter or Belkin,
nor have I used the Belkin card, so I can't speak to the merits of the
actual product, but the price is as cheap as one will probably find a
wireless PCMCIA card. Keep in mind that if you have no other 802.11b
devices you will also have to purchase a wireless Access Point or router.]

Sorry for the spam (okay, as Andy will probably point out, I'm not really
sorry; I figured that this might be of interest to someone here!), but
Micro Center Online
(http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=109835)
is offering the above Belkin 802.11b card for $25 less a $25 rebate,
which means that the only cost is ~$6 for shipping (US). And yes, this
card is supported with the GenPrism driver or the IBMPrism driver (see
http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=wifidevs).

I have no experience with the Belkin cards, though I have had some
frustrating times with one of their broadband router models (several
pieces, unfortunately). My experience with Belkin has been that they are
not as fastidious whenh it comes to firmware updates as most other
manufacturers.

Anyway, for someone on a real budget, this is a great way to get into the
swing of Wi-Fi. Enjoy.

SW: GCC v3.3.5-alpha3 release notes

19 Nov 2004 21:30:07

From: "Dave Yeo"

Here are the release notes as posted by Knut on the unixos2 mailing list
Quote mode on

PS. Here are the missing release notes:

GCC v3.3.5 / LIBC v0.6 - Alpha 3:
---------------------------------

This release have been timebombed and will stop working at the
end of December 2004. The reason for this is that data structures
shared between LIBC 0.6 and all future LIBC versions are not yet
quite finalized. (For your comfort the timebomb will go away when
the betas start, and this is the last planned LIBC v0.6 alpha.)

New Features:

o Updated GCC to version 3.3.5.

o Replaced the signal implementation. The new implementation
is much closer to the POSIX specs and implements a lot of
new interfaces.

o Experimental delayed loading import libraries. emximp have
a new -l option for generating such libraries. At present
emximp can only generate a.out libraries of this kind - so
use emxomf to convert to OMF.

o The dlfcn.h functions are in LIBC now.

o New functions:
getgrouplist(), initgroups(), memalign(), valloc(),
mprotect(), _signal_os2(), _signal_sysv(),
__sigpause_bsd(), bsd_signal(), killpg(), psignal(),
sigaltstack(), sigblock(), sighold(), sigignore(),
siginterrupt(), sigpause(), sigrelse(), sigsetmask(),
sigtimedwait(), sigvec(), sigwait(), sigwaitinfo(),
sigqueue(), sigset(), getgrgid(), getpwnam(),
getpwuid(), setegid(), seteuid(), setregid(),
setresgid(), setresuid(), setreuid(),
setrgid(), setruid(), waitid(), wait3(),
wait4() and getopt_long_only().

Bug fixes;

o Sockets were broken on some systems. Hopefully, this
should be corrected now.

o stat() failed on a file open for writing.

o fork() didn't work for processes which allocated lot's
of memory. Fixed incorrect syncing of memory objects.

o ...

Known Limitiations/Problems:

o Static linking not possible - will be fixed.

o alarm() is still missing. Code is 90% done but didn't
make it for the release.

o Job control will only be applied to thread 1 in a process.
This won't change.

o Missing some process group interfaces required for
job control. They'll show up soon.

qoute mode off

SW: Mr. Message (AIM client) 11/18/2004 update

19 Nov 2004 20:50:33

Forwarded message from Marty on Fri, 19 Nov 2004
21:38:10 UTC Posted on: comp.os.os2.apps

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and
a variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:

* Multimedia system interaction was completely re-written. Sound should
not cut out anymore after a long period of usage. Still supports any
audio codec that is installed on your system.
* You can now adjust the audio volume of sound clips that are played. *
Fixed a bug in the profile/away message conversion which resulted in
CR/LF characters being displayed as a musical note in the user
information popup window.
* Fixed so that other users chatting with you using other IM clients
will not get messages about sending data to you too quickly and will
not lose messages anymore.
* The limitation on the size of the message that a server will send us
has been increased to a value that the average IM client expects.
Your buddies shouldn't get any warnings about message length when
sending you a message anymore.
* Fixed a bug that could potentially cut off the length of an instant
message being sent out depending on the message formatting. * Fixed an
infinite loop on connection timeout and other TCP/IP errors. * Fixed
updating the idle time beyond the first 5 minutes (server gets
annoyed if this is reported multiple times)

You can download it here:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage_bin_11182004.zip
or with the full source code here:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage_srcbin_11182004.zip

There is also a WarpIn installation package here:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage_11182004.wpi

Please read the README file before running or asking for support. As
always, feedback is appreciated.

This is actually *not* the case, we also don't use majormajor anymore as
we moved the whole mail stuff to a BSD box.

If you have any questions regarding the compiler we recommend to join the
UnixOS2 mailinglist:

http://unixos2.org/pages/MailingLists.html

There is also a web interface at gmane.org:

SW: GCC 3.3.5-alpha3.

18 Nov 2004 20:14:48

From: madodelDESPAM@ptdprolog.net

A new alpha update of GCC is on Netlabs FTP site
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/GCC-3.3.5-alpha3.zip

GCC is a distribution of the GNU C/C++ compiler suite and associated
utilities for the IBM OS/2 platform. The ReleaseNote.os2 file appears to
be the same as the previous release (GCC v3.3.4 / LIBC v0.6 - Alpha 2), so
no idea what is different, other then the previous version timebombed at
the end of October.

A mailing list primarily intended for development of LIBC and GCC is
crated on netlabs. If there is too much usage questions and problem
reports we'll create a new list, but let's try with one list for a start.

Netlabs is using majormajor, and the procedure for subscribing is to send
a mail to majormajor@netlabs.org with this body:
subscribe gcc
end

The mailing list gets archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/

Event: Warpstock 2005 Call for Bids

17 Nov 2004 23:35:53

From: "John W. Edwards"

Warpstock 2004 is now history. NOW is the time to look into the future
toward Warpstock 2005.

The Board of Directors of Warpstock, Inc. is now accepting bids from
groups wishing to host Warpstock 2005. The challenge for the Warpstock
Board is to be able to announce the location of Warpstock 2005 in the not
too distant future.

Teams wishing to bid on hosting Warpstock 2005 should submit an e-mail
letter of their intent to host this event to the Board of Directors at
warpstock-corp@yahoogroups.com as soon as possible, but not later than
December 31, 2004. This letter of intent does not have to include all of
the details of Warpstock 2005, but needs to indicate the location for the
event and a commitment from the local group to put forth the effort needed
to stage the event.

The initial Event Team needs only a couple of members to start the process
and can add additional members as necessary as it gets closer to the Event
date.

The Board has provided the "Bid Proposal Process" to assist all interested
parties. The Bid Proposal Process is available immediately at:
http://www.warpstock.org/about/bid_proposal.html. The members of the Board
of Directors will be available to assist the Teams throughout the entire
bid process, including final site selection. The Board of Directors
contains a number of past Event Team members and will be available to
provide support for any group wishing to submit a proposal.

Now is the time to start! Let's make Warpstock 2005 the best Warpstock
yet!

Warpstock, Inc., is a North Carolina corporation. The Warpstock annual
conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from
around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More

SW: eRedMan Version 0.9.beta6

17 Nov 2004 10:17:38

From: Herwig Bauernfeind

This is the next public beta release of eRedMan, a pipe redirection
manager for eComStation and OS/2. It is a general pipe redirection
utility (like printmon.exe or print2ps.cmd that comes with ePDF). Its
equivalent in the Windows world is RedMon.

eRedMan is able to monitor multiple pipes and associate one program to a
each pipe and execute that program, whenever data was written to the pipe.

What is new is this beta?

+Added: Toolbar with shortcuts to 3 existing contextmenu functions
(Stop, Restart, Settings)
+Added: Toolbar buttons to open printer folder and spooler object.
+Added: Some more help text
*Changed: Rewrote pipe monitor code once more
*Changed: After a thread has completed a new one is spawned much faster
than before (3rd attempt to fix job loss problem, and this one really
looks promissing)

Known problems and limitations:

* Printing to a pipe which is associated to GhostScript and configured to
write to LPT1, while VPC is running causes a SYS3175 crash in
PMSPOOL.EXE. Usage in conjunction with VPC is problematic anyway. This is
under investigation. More feedback is required here.

* Temporary files are placed into the TEMP directory. eRedMan currently
has a very primitive cleanup mechanism for leftover files, so you will
not be able to run this beta for a very long time (weeks or months)
without restarting it once in a while, depending on the number of usages.
On a PC that is rebooted daily, this should not be an issue.

Feedback is appreciated (although there was almost none up to now).

Contact me by email in case of problems.

Get eRedMan from hobbes:

SW: unixODBC for OS/2 version 0.10 released

15 Nov 2004 15:22:53

From: lsunleyDESPAM@mb.sympatico.ca

unixODBC for OS/2 version 0.10 released. This is a replacement for other
ODBC driver managers and will work with the QE database drivers supplied
with DBExpert and with the drivers release with Louts Smartsuite for OS/2.
The OS/2 DB2 driver also works.

The file unixodbc010.zip is on Hobbes
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=unixodbc010.zip

The database drivers included in this release are:

- Flat text files (comma delimited ASCII)
- Flat DBF file
- postgreSQL database
- mySQL database
- FreeTDS (Sybase and MS SQL Server)
- SQLite ODBC driver and support library

Package Contents:

- driver manager (ODBC.DLL)
- installation API (ODBCCP.DLL)
- cursor library (ODBCCR.DLL)
- mySQL client library (libmysqC.dll)
- mySQL database driver and client (myODBC3.DLL libmysqC.dll)
- postgreSQL database driver (psqlODBC.dll)
- text file driver (ODBCtxt.dll ODBCtxtS.dll)
- DBF file driver (ODBCdbf.dll ODBCdbfS.dll)
- TDS database driver (ODBCtds.dll)
- SQLite file database driver (SQLLODBC.dll)
- PM ODBC Data Manager
- PM SQL Query
- RexxSQL modules for ODBC (RexxSQL and RexxODBC)
- Sample databases for text and DBF drivers
- Sample Rexx programs
- GCC 3.2.2 runtime (LIBC05.DLL)

Suggestions:

When using databases on your local network and you do not have a local DNS
(Domain Name Server) you should have
SET USE_HOSTS_FIRSTS=Y
in the config.sys file and have your HOSTS file in \mptn\etc updated with
the IP number to host names.

The myODBC3 driver and the FreeTDS driver have a very long timeout for DNS
lookups and your system will appear to lock up until the DNS lookup times
out and the local HOSTS file is checked unless you have USE_HOSTS_FIRST
specified

Fixes:

Update 010

- The DBF ODBC driver had several bugs (update 009 shipped a copy of the
driver that was half way through being updated :-(
This version will operate with Star Office 5.1 in read only mode and
PMODBCDM will correctly display the tables and columns for DBF files.
RexxSQL will also work with the driver.
- RexxSQL fixed SQLDataSources

Update 009

- The DBF ODBC driver configuration now allows 255 byte directory paths -
The text file ODBC driver configuration now allows 255 byte directory
paths - removed the "In connect" message displayed by SQLConnect
- SQLDriverConnect for the SQLite ODBC driver would not work
- SQLite ODBC driver did not report supporting SQLSetCursorName correctly
- mySQL ODBC driver was not returning correct maximum buffer size values
for
column descriptions of catalog functions
- mySQL ODBC driver was not testing for TRACE enabled correctly - when
mySQL ODBC was set to pad columns the PM ODBC DataMmanager program would
crash and the request of tables for a specific database would fail -
RexxSQL was linked with an older version (pre Update 007) of ODBC.DLL

Update 008

- The ODBC DBF file driver has been fixed so that it now works to some
extent with IBM VA Smalltalk v6.0 and Star Office 5.1. The driver will
only work in "read only" mode with Star Office. The driver will now allow
you to bind columns after SQLPrepare as well as SQLExecute.

Update 007

- the "Test connection" button was missing on the mySQL driver connection
page.
- Some functions were not exported in ODBC.DLL that caused the driver
manager to fail when used with Visualage Smalltalk versions 5.5 and 6.0 -
experimental work on allowing update cursors in mySQL ODBC (incomplete
for testing only)

Update 006

- PMODBCDM program would fail if drivermanager DLL was loaded by Star
Office - mySQL driver did not load driver defaults when no DSN was present
in connection string

Update 005

- The postgreSQL driver set SQL_DATETIME as an "unknown" data type - The
mySQL driver set SQL_DATETIME as an "unknown" data type

Update 004

- The postgreSQL driver now works with StarOffice 5.1
- The postgreSQL driver SQLTables function now works correctly
this was causing the ODBC Data Manager to fetch multiple copies
of the tables and schemas
- The mySQL driver now works with StarOffice 5.1
the field column layouts for catalog, stats, primary keys, etc did
not match the layout expected by the libmysqC routines.

Update 003

- change install layout to place drivers in \uodbc\dll
corrects problem where dialog boxes for configuration would
not display for some drivers

- correct failure when testing connection for a new mySQL DSN

Improvements:

Update 010

- SQLite ODBC driver is updated to version 0.66 of the code
- new sample \uodbc\samples\rexx\souresa.cmd shows how to
use the SQLDataSources procedure

Update 009

- The SQLite ODBC driver has been updated to the v0.65 code.
The driver also supports "memo" as a datatype for compatibility with code
written for DBF ODBC drivers.

Update 008

- the SQLite ODBC driver is now included in the package. The supporting
SQLITE28.DLL is also installed.

Update 007

- The PM Datamanager program will now allow you to connect to a database
with SQLDriverConnect when "Connect" is selected for a database Driver. If
the connection is successful the driver entry has a database tree showing
the tables present in the database.

- the mySQL driver now supports prompting for SQLDriverConnection

Update 004

- PostgreSQL ODBC driver now has a new configuration GUI and there is also
a GUI for configuring the driver defaults "Add" and "Configure" on the
drivers page of the ODBC Administration notebook. The driver has been
rebuilt to support ODBC version 3.00 (was 2.5) All trace options are built
into the driver.

- mySQL ODBC driver now has a new configuration GUI and there is also a
GUI for configuring the driver defaults "Add" and "Configure" on the
drivers page of the ODBC Administration notebook. The driver and the
libmysqc library have been built with trace support and the trace file
used can be specified on the "Trace" page. When you specify a driver
letter the colon ":" must be doubled as in "C::/odbclog/mytrace.log"

Update 003:

- RexxSQL has been added to the package. RexxSQL.dll and RexxODBC.dll are
installed to the package DLL directory and the RexxSQL.exe and
RexxODBC.exe are installed to the BIN directory. These versions of the
programs are specific to a 3.0 level of ODBC driver manager. A Sample Rexx
program has been added to the SAMPLES directory. The web site for RexxSQL
is http://rexxsql.sourceforge.net

- A fix has been made to the myODBC3 driver. The driver catalog functions
did not return the correct size for some columns in the table and column
catalogs.

- FreeTDS database driver for Sybase and MS SQL server has been added to
the package. This driver is based on the 0.62.4 FreeTDS code and will be
updated to the latest code in the near future. The current driver version
uses .conf files for some configuration information. The files are
installed to \uodbc\configure.
The web site for FreeTDS is http://www.freetds.org
This is an beta driver - it works but not for everything.

Update 002:

The PM SQL Query window now provides for:
- load and save of query text to files
- saving query results to a command delimited text file
- prompting for user name and password when not present in the DSN

The PM ODBC Data Manager now provides for:
- prompting for user name and password when not present in the DSN

The package includes a port of the version 4 mySQL client library. This
library is named libmysqC.dll and should not interfere if you have a local
mySQL database installation. This library is compiled with GCC 3.2.2.
Thanks to all those people who did the port of the mySQL database to OS/2.

Known Problems:

- RexxSQL does not work properly with the ODBCtxt driver
The problem is in the driver, it has to be enhanced to support
the functionality required by RexxSQL

Changes in the pipeline:

- make SQLDriverConnect work properly for all drivers

- improvements to the PM ODBC Data Manager to allow you create
tables in the database with "point and click" interface.

- data transfer utility that lets you move tables and data from one
DSN to another.

Feel free to e-mail me with comments or problems.

All programs are licensed under the LGPL with the exception of SQLite ODBC
which is a BSD licence and SQLite itself which is public domain
