Go Wireless... for Less

D-Link http://www.dlink.com is offering a $10 rebate on the DWL-810 and DWL-810+ ethernet to wireless bridges.

As mentioned in a previous VOICE newsletter, the DWL-810 and DWL-810+ permit any device with a standard ethernet port (and DHCP) to participate in wireless (802.11b) networks. No special drivers are needed, so setup is a breeze. Just plug your eComStation or OS/2 Warp PC -- with ethernet driver and DHCP enabled -- into the bridge. These little transceivers measure 90 by 82 by 40 mm. There's a web-based interface built into the device for configuration. One fun feature: you can wirelessly connect your LAN with your neighbor's LAN using a pair of these devices.

Rebates end March 31, 2003 (DWL-810+) and April 2, 2003 (DWL-810). Here are the URLs:

http://www.dlink.com/rebates/Pdfs/Wireless_MIR_0203.pdf

Product information pages:

http://www.dlink.com/products/dwl810/
http://www.dlink.com/products/wireless/dwl810+/

You can use the popular price comparison sites, such as Streetprices.com, Dealtime.com, Pricewatch.com, MySimon.com, Epinions.com, etc. For example, Comp-U-Plus http://www.compuplus.com has the DWL-810+ for $79.95 plus shipping (before rebate).

Here's a review of the DWL-810:

I have no affiliation with any of these companies.

Bargain: HP PhotoSmart 1215VM Printer

CompGeeks has the HP PhotoSmart 1215VM inkjet printer on sale for just $83 using the special coupon GEEK1215.

This printer is designed for printing digital camera photos (as well as normal printing). You can take your digital camera's CompactFlash, IBM Microdrive, or SmartMedia card and plug it directly into the printer. No PC required!

Here's the link:

http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HPPS1215VM-R

This printer also has both USB and parallel ports, and it supports the PCL 3 Enhanced datastream, so you'll likely have excellent printing results from your eComStation or OS/2 Warp PC as well. (Try the DeskJet 970C driver in the OMNI package, since this printer is listed as a close match to that model.)

Great Deal: PC Card Modem

eComStation and OS/2 Warp Road Warriors:

Here's the excellent XJ1560 PC Card V.90 56K modem, fully eComStation and OS/2 Warp compatible, for just $17! No dongle cable needed: this card has the X-Jack. This modem is even listed in the AT&T Global Network Dialer's hardware list.

http://store.yahoo.com/livewarehouse/de3c56kx2pcm.html

The XJ1560 is a real hardware modem that won't take performance away from your notebook's processor. While it's not V.92 (like the Zoom 3075 modem I suggested a few weeks ago), it is a bargain, and V.92 is no faster downloading (and only marginally faster uploading).

I have no affiliation with this company.

Patches for SmartSuite 1.7.1

Patches for SmartSuite 1.7.1 are available (and have been for months):

The relevant files are:
OS2_MAIN123W_DLL.zip 2618 KB 11/05/02 07:03:00 AM
OS2_l14excel.zip 672 KB 11/07/02 05:03:00 PM

I think these fix some problems with the new Excel import filters and some other stuff. Read the README first! Make sure you have v1.7.1, if you apply these to v1.7, you will break 123 (I tried).
