More "Tim's Warped Bargains": Printers
OK, that subject line is a bit of a joke, but I keep finding interesting
(and inexpensive) eComStation- and OS/2 Warp-compatible products. I wish
I did get a commission, but I don't.
1. Techdepot.com (a unit of Office Depot) has the Brother HL-1440 laser
printer on sale for $199.00 with free shipping. This is a monochrome
laser printer rated at up to 15 pages per minute. Comes with both USB and
parallel ports. Here's the direct link:

Recent versions of the IBM LaserJet-family driver include a Brother
HL-1440 driver, so you're good to go.
The standard 2 MB of RAM might have trouble with complex graphics at
higher resolution, but that amount of memory should handle everything you
can throw at it in 300 dpi. Memory is expandable. Here are the

2. Techdepot.com also has the same printer, refurbished, for about $40
less.
3. Computers4Sure.com (same company again) has the Brother HL-1250
refurbished for about $165. This printer is 12 pages per minute, but it
comes standard with twice the memory, and it's got a somewhat smarter
engine inside. (It emulates dot matrix printers, for example, so you can
even print from very old DOS applications.) Here's the link:

4. Need a fast monochrome duplexing laser printer? That's available for
not much more money. Try the Panasonic KX-P7105. (NOT the KX-P7100.)
The KX-P7105 has a built-in duplexer and is rated at 15 pages per minute.
There's a generous 16 MB of RAM, so you should have no trouble with 600
dpi. Bear in mind the printer comes with a "starter toner cartridge," so
you'll need to purchase another one right away if you do much printing.
Includes both USB and parallel interfaces.
This model isn't explicitly listed in IBM's LaserJet driver, but pick any
comparable PCL 6 duplex printer. The LaserJet 4 (duplex) should be a very
safe driver choice.
Shop around. Techsavings.com, for example, has the printer for about $273
with shipping.
5. Are you REALLY on a budget? Maybe a used laser printer from eBay
makes sense. Here are some laser printer models that are pretty safe
choices:
- Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4L
HP's last budget laser printer before the big mistake: vertical paper
feed. The pinnacle of 300 dpi quality, 4 pages per minute, possibly
indestructible, cheap. Normally comes with 1 MB of RAM which is enough,
but can be upgraded to 2 MB. I've got one, and I can't figure out any
reason to replace it.
- IBM Network Printer 17 (4317)
One of the few 17 page per minute duplexing laser printers that actually
runs at nearly full speed (about 8 sheets per minute duplexed). I use
this 600 dpi printer at the office, and it's a terrific workhorse. You
can often find eBay examples with extra memory and/or network adapter.
Superb eComStation and OS/2 Warp driver.
- Brother HL-1650
Another duplexing laser printer. I'm seeing some new ones on eBay for
less than the KX-P7105 mentioned above.
- Minolta Magicolor 2200
A recently discontinued color laser printer. Do not get the "DeskLaser"
or "DL" version of this printer. Make sure you get the one that includes
Postscript and PCL emulation. IBM's Postscript driver lists this model.
As always, I do not have any affiliation with any of these companies.
6. Duplexing color laser printers are still very expensive, but if you
want something a bit novel, you might take a look at the HP's duplexing
color inkjet printers, such as the 970C and 990C. (There will be some
more letters after the C in the model number. You can safely ignore those
extra letters.) IBM's OMNI driver supports the 970C and 990C, and you can
find these printers on eBay for not much money.

ePDF v2 beta 7.1
A new and stable beta of ePDF is available.
We have fixed some bugs, added a history function for the docinfos, and
screwed the subsampling rates up to 4000 dpi (considering to "ePDF PS").
ePDF is a PM tool for PostScript to PDF conversion, which uses GhostScript
as back end.

Goldencode has started Java 1.4 Beta test
Hi!
Goldencode has started the first beta test of their JVM 1.4 for OS/2. It
is a 'private' (or better named 'closed'?) beta. Only beta testers known
by Goldencode receiving the JVM, updates and information.
The J2SE 1.4.1 for OS/2 FAQ -

Many of you might have expected this for some time - OS2.ORG is closing
down. OS2.ORG will cease to exist. Kerni, the man behind the scene, can no
longer spare enough time to keep the site up and running, Jörg Sievers
(Jogi) is switching to Macintosh, and Skotti doesn't have enough spare
time left. Currently we are open for ideas on how to save the site
(hardware and domain). But the team will definitely stop maintainig the
site.

NetDrive for OS/2 2.2.0 Beta 2
The second beta version of NetDrive for OS/2 2.2 is available. This
version has a number of enhancements and includes support for a new level
of external plugins. Old plugins are supported as well. User interface was
improved. The FTP plugin included in the package was updated to the new
level. FTP passwords are now stored in encrypted form in configuration
files.

There have been several minor bugfixes to the Aspirout driver. A new

decode feature.
