OS/2 Tips

We scan the Web, Usenet and the OS/2 mailing lists looking for these gems. Have you run across an interesting bit of information about OS/2 or eComStation recently? Please share it with all our readers. Send your tips to tips@os2voice.org. If you are interested in joining a particular OS/2 mailing list, check out the VOICE Mailing List page for subscribing instructions for a large variety of existing lists - http://www.os2voice.org/mailinglists.html.

Editor's note: these tips are from OS/2-eComStation users and in some cases can not be verified by myself. Please heed this as a warning that if you are not sure about something, don't do it.

Mar 02, 2004 - Our first tip of the month is from Daniela Engert, who offered on comp.os.os2.setup.misc her recipe for running OS/2 on an AMD Athlon64 system:
  1. get a recent OS2LDR.
  2. you may get away without this step, but I run my PatchLdr utility on *every* loader.
  3. remove TESTCFG.SYS from CONFIG.SYS
  4. remove APM.SYS from CONFIG.SYS
  5. if the disk is unpartitioned/unformatted and you install using DaniS506.ADD: apply the /!BIOS option to DaniS506 in CONFIG.SYS

Steps 1 and 2 deal with OS2LDR problems at memory sizes of 512MB or more.
Steps 3,4 and 5 deal with OS/2 kernel problems calling out to real mode BIOS routines.

My Athlon64 system here is running just fine with 1GB memory installed.

Mar 12, 2004 - Someone asked about the differences between the IBM released Scitech display Special Edition driver version versus the Pro version on the Scitech support forum news://www.scitechsoft.com/scitech.snap.graphics.os2:
Two seperate programs:
the 2.1.7 is "newer" that the 2.3.1 but it is a newer version of a different product really. 2.1.7 is snap/se basically a lite versiion of snap that IBM bought rights to distribute. 2.3.1 is the full product.

Mar 12, 2004 - On comp.os.os2.misc, someone asked if IBM was going to release a 6.0.2 of VisualAge Smalltalk for OS/2. Peter Brown had the answer:
I did spot something in the ibm newsgroup:- news://news.software.ibm.com/ibm.software.vasmalltalk about updating 6.0.1 to 6.0.2 but you need to do it manually.

Mar 15, 2004 - On the eComStation Discussion group on Yahoo. Someone asked for reference sites about OS/2 networking. There were several responses:

Lon Hooker suggested the following:

This site is quite basic, but does a good of describing the networking set-up in OS/2. Even a short section in getting it to connect to W$ boxes. <http://www.deltasys.org/techindex.html>

Neil Waldhauer offered:

For Fixes on networking, <http://www.warpupdates.mynetcologne.de/english/site_contents.html>
For SAMBA, <http://huizen.dds.nl/~jacco2/samba/warp.html>
For Windows, <http://www.mit.edu/activities/os2/peer/WARPPEER.HTM>
Some short articles <http://www.haynes97.freeserve.co.uk/>

e-mail list - <os2-isp@warpspeed.com.au>

Mark Overholser added:

I would add this link: <http://home.austin.rr.com/byteenable/sea.htm>
Colins page <http://www.haynes97.freeserve.co.uk/os2tont.htm> references this link, but at its old address. This is the new one.

Finally Dietrich Teickner concludes with two more links:

This are nice 2 German links,
Mostly the last has helped me at many questions.
