Following a very successful first meeting in January, WarpUK, a user group for
UK OS/2 SOHO users, hobbyists, and developers is planning a second meeting at IBM's
Hursley Park Site on Thursday 6 May 1999. The meeting will start at 1:00pm and will
continue into the evening. Admission, payable at the door, will be 6ukp for WarpUK
members and 10ukp for non-members, with a 50% discount for students and senior citizens.
A major topic of the meeting will be 'Java and OS/2', but details for all the
speakers and demonstrations are not confirmed yet. Ideas in the pipeline are comparisons
of popular Windows software and their OS/2 equivalents, and also more networking
demonstrations. We are also hoping for a demo of the (hopefully) newly released
Aurora GA.
Following the successful inaugural meeting in January, WarpUK has been fully
constituted as a subscription-paying group with a constitution, bank account and
elected officers. With this next meeting we aim to build on the success we have
achieved so far, and provide a really good resource for UK based OS/2 users!
Anybody willing to give a presentation would be most welcome. Other ideas for
workshops and demonstrations are also positively encouraged. Anyone interested should
reply to this email, either to the OS2UK list or directly to Sid Gale on sidg@btinternet.com
or Chris Lindley on chris@scotgate2.demon.co.uk.
For more details on WarpUK, or for the current status on the meeting, please
go to www.warp.in-uk.net. Details on how to get
to IBM Hursley Park will be posted on this website shortly.
If you will be attending or require further details, please email either Sid
Gale on sidg@btinternet.com or Chris Lindley
on chris@scotgate2.demon.co.uk.

The meeting starts around 20:30 cet. Tonight we will have a general discussion
on OS/2 and its hardware support. We will attempt to give a round-up of the hardware
devices that are currently supported in OS/2 and some useful tips that might be
of help when selecting the best device for your OS/2 system.
As always, following the main presentation there will be a workshop, so we invite
everyone to bring his/her PC.
Last month we were happy to see a few new members at our meeting, so we hope
to see all of them again this time!
We've also done a complete refresh (again) of our website, so we would like to
invite everyone to have a look and tell us your comments ...
Speed to our next meeting!
Close to 100% of Phoenix OS/2 Society members are online. In addition to being
technically sophisticated, we're also very connected. But, to extend the old saying,
you can't be too thin, too rich, or have too fast an Internet connection.
Unfortunately, for a lot of businesses and home users, incredibly fast Internet
speeds have been far out of the budget. That might change for you, really soon -
especially if you attend the next Phoenix OS/2 Society general meeting, on Tuesday,
April 13, when SpeedChoice will demonstrate its affordable, high-speed wireless
Internet service. And yes, it works with OS/2.
Did you say wireless?!
SpeedChoice is a wireless, data communications service company and an ISP that
specializes in high-speed connections to the Internet. It offers businesses - of
any size -- a full range of products and services that can help you operate faster
and more efficiently. SpeedChoice lets home users experience the Internet how it
was meant to be. . . fast! Enjoy download speeds up to 100 times faster than your
old modem could ever handle.
That is real speed. Speed for everything you do online -- email, chat, FTP, and
surfing the web. Speed for everything you could never do online before, like video
and audio, large document transfer, and no waiting!
SpeedChoice accomplishes these incredible speeds through a wireless connection.
Your Mac, PC, or LAN receives information through a fixed wireless 10 Megabit per
second downstream data channel. The return upstream path can range from a dial-up
telephone circuit or ISDN line, all the way up to a dedicated or frame relay circuit.
(Realistically, you still do need a phone line. Dual-direction wireless access is
coming, but it's not imminent.)
This means realistic download speeds of 1 to 2 Mbps at home and 5 to 6 Mbps for
your busy corporate LAN and its stressed T1 line. The technology is called MMDS,
Multichannel Multi-point Distribution Service, and it transmits 2.5GHz signals through
the air, enabling superior signal transmission at higher speeds than other wireless
technologies. Since no satellite transmission is involved, typical problems of latency
and speed restrictions do not apply. The SpeedChoice fixed, wireless network is
a highly reliable, secure medium for data transmission.
All this starts at $39.95 for a home user. It's available in Phoenix and Detroit
right now, though the company is expanding. (Sensibly, they're testing in comparatively
smaller markets. If it's not available near you, perhaps you should consider moving
to Arizona, which we think is a good idea anyway. Until then, you can check out
the company at http://www.speedchoice.com.)
And you said OS/2?!
SpeedChoice doesn't formally support OS/2, because they don't have any techies
who swear to know it as well as, well, the average member of the Society. But, just
like any other ISP, they use TCP/IP and dialup settings. (And, after all, I was
able to talk them into showing up. That's a good sign. A better sign would be for
you to show up, to make it clear that the OS/2 community is interested in technology
like this.)
You'll probably have an easier time at installation if you have a Windows or
Macintosh machine handy for the setup guys, but one Society board member has been
regaling the rest of us with his download speeds. At the meeting, we'll describe
some OS/2 specific tips and tricks to make the system work across your LAN.
When and where
The general meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 13, at 7:00pm, at the Mountain
Preserve Reception Center, 1431 E Dunlap. The "random access" Q&A
session starts promptly, on the dot, at 6:30pm, give or take a half hour. Visitors
are always welcome, especially if they bring chocolate. This meeting is very non-OS-specific,
so it might be a good time to bring along a friend that uses another operating system.
You can find a map to the meeting site at http://www.possi.org.
While you're at the site, sign up for a free sample copy of extended attributes,

The Phoenix OS/2 Society is the world's largest user group devoted to IBM's OS/2
operating system, with members in 16 countries and 48 U.S. States. (Know any OS/2
users in South Dakota or Alabama? We're trying to complete the set.)

The OS/2 SIG of the Philadelphia Area Computer Society invites all interested
computer users to attend the March meeting: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24, 1999 7:00 - 10:00
PM
The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA
*** MARCH FEATURE PRESENTATION *** -- OBJECT DESKTOP v.2 --
Main feature in March will be a Stardock Object Desktop v.2.0 presentation/demo
by SIG members and OD aficionados Ben Bowers and Tom MacKnight.
Object Desktop has been for a long period of time, and still remains, one of
the most popular and widely used 3rd party OS/2 workplace shell enhancement products
on the market. To those who use it, OD has become an indispensible adjunct to the
OS/2 operating system, especially the virtual desktops feature. Conversely, OD is
also somewhat of a mystery to many other OS/2 users who haven't been exposed to
it in any detail.
If you want to see and hear about all the neat features of OD and how it can
make OS/2 computing more enjoyable and useful, don't miss the Ben and Tom show at
the March 24th meeting. Stardock has also generously agreed to provide a copy of
the latest version of OD for a raffle prize.
Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news, new product announcements,
a brief "How-To" or "Neat Feature" member presentation, Q&A
session, software raffle, etc. An OS/2 system will be on hand for demos of OS/2,
Java, Internet, etc., as time may permit. Free light refreshments will also be available.
Mark the date and time: Wednesday, March 24, at 7:00pm. If you want to hear about
all the new and exciting developments, or have questions about OS/2 Warp and Java,
this is the place to see OS/2 in action and get all the answers to your questions.
OS/2 SIG meetings are open & free for all OS/2 users and guests, and all others
interested in learning about OS/2.
