I need people who have the following motherboard to test ThermoProtect V1.21 for me...

Abit BX6 Rev 2
Gigabyte 6BXE, BX2000.
MicroStar MS-6163

or other motherboard with Winbond W83782D monitoring chip installed. And you need to make sure that your motherboard does have the chip installed, as you can find out in the BIOS page. Where if they didn't have any temperature/fan/voltage sensing information, that would mean that you don't have the chip installed. (Turn off Spread Spectrum, as it can sometimes disable the chip somehow).

To test the experimental "internal CPU thermal diode" code, and to see if it is feasible to auto-detect the presence of the CPU thermal diode connection...

Every Monday and Thursday, I'll be reporting on OS/2-related items for sale on http://www.ebay.com and the comp.os.os2.marketplace newsgroup. Even if you're not thinking about buying anything OS/2 related, you might find something that catches your interested.

As always, there are plenty of copies of OS/2 2.x, Warp 3, and Warp 4 available for sale. These items make great gifts for your Windows-using friends!

We also have a couple books, such as "OS/2 Warp Uncensored" and "The Warp Book" for sale. Among the more interesting items are "Dr Solomon's Anti-Virus Toolkit" (there's an excellent review in OS/2 e-Zine on it) and OS/2 Warp Server 4. Someone's also selling the Microsoft Macro Assembler 6.0.

If you can read German, there are also 17 issues of the great print magazine, "OS/2 Inside". And that copy of DeScribe mentioned last time is apparently very popular - with 23 bids it's now at $61.

On comp.os.os2.marketplace, there are some very unique items for sale: Global Link Power Translator, Sams Protect, Microlearn Game Pack, and Visual Age Java 1.0. On comp.os.os2.programmer.misc, someone is also selling VAJava 1.0 and Borland C/C++ 1.0.

Those of you looking to sell your OS/2 related stuff, I strongly recommend you put it on eBay and post an announcement on comp.os.os2.marketplace.

If you include the word "OS/2" in the title of your description, I'll see it and include it in the next report.

SPECIAL PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT FOR OS/2 FANS!

Now that I have you attention... :)

On Saturday, May 1st I'm planning to start doing an advertising blitz to announce my latest Java-based product, "The Java-PalmPilot Project". However, as a long-time OS/2 user, supporter and advocate I thought I would make sure that my friends in the OS/2 community got ahold of this news (and the ability to download a pre-release version) before everyone else does this weekend :).

The Java-PalmPilot Project, under development for the last 8 months, is a set of developers tools and GUI based end-user applications for synchronizing your Palm Computing Platform device (Palm 1000 - 5000, PalmPilot Personal and Pro, and Palm III) with your personal computer. It runs on any personal computer capable of running Java 1.1 and either the Sun Java Communications API or the JSerial Handler API (which, of course, includes OS/2).

The entire project has been developed 100% under OS/2 WARP v4, using IBM's VisualAge for Java 2.0 Professional for OS/2, and has been verified as 100% Pure Java Certifiable by Sun's JavaPureCheck program.

The program features full Palm Computing Platform synchronization with third-party Personal Information Managers via third party jConduit plug-ins, installation of PRC and PDB files, full compressed Palm Computing Platform device backup and restore, and date and time synchronization. It also features third-party jConduit plug-in support, third-party national language plug-in support (support currently available for English and Esperanto), and a fully open, documented API for developers to use individual components (such as the jHotSync Protocol Stack) in their own projects.

A free pre-release version is currently avalable for SOHO and personal use from the project homepage at:

http://yaztromo.idirect.com/java-pilot.html

The project homepage is currently under reconstruction in anticipation of the product's official launch on May 1st, however it does have the download link and basic setup instructions available, along with an E-Mail address to contact for help and support.

Additionally, we're looking for Java Developers interested in writing jConduits for synchronizing with popular personal information packages, and developers interested in porting the language plug-in module to other national languages. A developers page has been setup at:

http://yaztromo.idirect.com/java-pilot-dev.html

Interested developers are encouraged to visit and peruse this site, and to contact us at yaztromo@idirect.com for additional information and support.

Any and all questions, comments and inquiries are welcome!

Brad BARCLAY,
Lead Developer,
The Java-PalmPilot Project.

I am moving back after 12 years from India to Germany in 3 weeks with my 6-members family. Due to the work involved in doing that move, I won't be able to do the regular updates to the Notebook/2 Site at:

http://www.os2ss.com/users/DrMartinus/notebook.htm

or to respond to the questions I get as quickly as you might expect. I apologize for any inconveniences caused. Sent information will get posted, but it may be with a considerable delay. In the meantime, to those seeking help I would recommend to have a thorough look at the webpage. Some info may be not as easy to find as you expect, but most of the questions I receive could have been answered by a more thorough look at the web page.

Thanks for your support and Cheers!

Dr. Martinus

This week's edition of Focus on OS/2 is now online.

Topic: This week I am continuing the Primer on Installation and Setup of OS/2 for New Users.

Many long-time OS/2 users have written to tell me they are learning too, in spite of the "New User" tag. This is probably because one of my goals has been to gather bits and pieces of information that are scattered all over the Net into one place in a logical format. So don't let the term "New" frighten you off. Even if your not "New" you still might learn something. :-)

The feature can be accessed at:

http://os2.miningco.com/library/weekly/mcurrent.htm.

Besides the feature, a huge number of links (47) dealing with using the Internet, connecting to the Internet from OS/2, and Internet servers. These new links can be accessed at:

http://os2.miningco.com/library/blnews.htm

Focus on OS/2 now contains 50 categories and 907 links.

Squid offers high performance proxy caching for Web clients, It supports FTP, Gopher, and HTTP requests. The cache software, available only in source, is more than an order of magnitude faster than the CERN httpd and other popular Internet caches, because it never needs to fork (except for FTP), is implemented with non-blocking I/O, keeps meta data and hot objects in VM, caches DNS lookups. Squid caches can be arranged hierarchically for an improvement in response times and a reduction in bandwith usage. Squid runs on all popular Unix platforms.

I'm glad to present you new version of Squid - 2.2 STABLE 2 it is Beta 1, but I consider it to be more stable than any others. New Squid features many core bug-corrections and also has improved speed. Beta 1 has all OS/2 features and bug corrections and support all Squid 2.1 external modules like authenticator or Redirector. It can be found on http://www.os2.spb.ru/technology/squid. After little testing I will also release version with DELAY_POOLS and SNMP. Currenly Squid has HTTP_VIOLATIONS, HTCP, CACHE_DIGEST and others.

Every Monday and Thursday, I'll be reporting on OS/2-related items for sale on www.ebay.com website and the comp.os.os2.marketplace newsgroup. Even if you're not thinking about buying anything OS/2 related, you might find something that catches your interested.

On eBay this week, we have the usual mix of standard and unusual OS/2 products. If you're interested in buying a copy of OS/2, either 2.x, Warp 3, or Warp 4, there are plenty available for sale. Warp 4 is currently going for under $50 (it usually costs twice that), older version can be had for only a few dollars. To find these OS/2 items, go to www.ebay.com and search on "OS/2".

Some of the more interesting things for sale:
Colorworks 2.0 including that incredible manual;
All 10 issue of the classic "OS/2 Monthly" print magazine;
17 issues of the German "OS/2 Inside";
SOMobjects Workgroup Enabler;
Various Lotus products including Ami Pro, Notes, 1-2-3, and Freelance Graphics;
DeScribe for OS/2!!!!!;
Four OS/2 t-shirts;
And the best deal of all: OS/2 Warp Server For $212 (10 copies available).

On comp.os.os2.marketplace (you can use http://www.dejanews.com/home_ps.shtml to search this newsgroup and find the messages), we have:
Corel Draw for OS/2 $50;
10 copies of Warp 3 Connect for $31 each.

Those of you looking to sell your OS/2 related stuff, I strongly recommend you put it on eBay and post an announcement on comp.os.os2.marketplace. If you include the word "OS/2" in the title of your description, I'll see and include it in the next report.

Hopefully, with enough OS/2 products being bought and sold on eBay, we might even get our own category.

Although they don't mention OS/2 specifically, and instead say it allows the customer to install any version of Linux that they like, IBM has said that they plan on selling laptops without any operating system installed:

http://www.crn.com/sections/news/news.asp?ArticleID=4086

"'We plan to ship a base machine without any operating system on it so you could load any form of Linux you want,' [Phil Hester, chief technology officer for IBM's Personal Systems Group] said."

Laptops that are Linux compatible are very likely to be OS/2 compatible as well.

PPWIZARD has gone through a "few" more revisions since my last update apart from some bug fixes and better validation in some cases, the main changes are:

For more information on the changes, have a look at:

http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~dbareis/ppwizard/changehistory.htm

NOTE - HOLIDAYS
I will be on holidays around June/July so if you have any questions lined up now is the time to ask them!!!!

WHAT IS PPWIZARD?
For those that don't as yet know PPWIZARD is a generic preprocessor, although most people use it only for HTML. It is also great for rexx code, you can now create header files contain code which you can if you wish conditionally generate (maybe you require different error handling for a particular common routine). It is generic in that it can be used to process any "text" files in any languages, if PPWIZARD's default processing gets in the way then there are many #Option's to change it.

For more information (and to see online examples) on PPWIZARD have a look at:
