PRINTER DRIVER LEVEL = 30.688 (OMINI.DRV dated 7/8/99)
-----------------------------
19 NEW and 896 Printers UPDATED
The latest OMNI driver now supports bi-directional printing at 720x720 on my
Epson Stylus Color.
It is much faster than the previous version, although, this could be due to FP11.
It prints almost continously, without the long pauses seen previously.
Photo print quality is Excellent, but still not quite as smooth and detailed
as under Windows (Dithering(Stucki)? Microweaving(not?) Bi-directional(cannot force
uni)?) However, the color matching is better than with the windows driver!

While searching through IBM's web site, I came across this very interesting URL:
http://servicepac.mainz.ibm.com/cd1root/TAINFO/NEWSACT/EASYALL.HTM
I can't guarantee this, but it appears to be a list of all IBM software (or at
least, all software categories), listed by platform. The first platform is, amazingly
enough, OS/2. There are about 180 links. A few of them are links to pages about
a whole category of products, like the Rexx page or the Tivoli page. A few links
don't exist (like the one for "NTune"), and many are outdated or don't
point to software that's no longer available for OS/2. The rest, however, appear
to be links to OS/2 products that IBM sells.
At the very least, it's worth exploring.

Press Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
____________________________________________
Third Weekly Newsletter Update Released by Warp Expo West
Warp Expo West, the free international OS/2 expo to be held this September, has
just emailed its third weekly newsletter to all those who've registered for the
event. (The url to register and receive the newsletter is below.)
"It's important to give our future guests a steady flow of information,"
said Rollin White, Chairman of the Warp Expo West planning committee as well as
a significant player in Warpstock 97 and the 1997 and 1998 versions of Warp Expo
West. "Back in 1997, one of the things we didn't have time to do was a newsletter.
Putting on two years of OS/2 shows has given us a lot of experience, and the Warp
Expo West newsletter is one result."
Warp Expo West is free for guests and exhibitors alike, and everyone who registers
for Warp Expo West receives the weekly newsletter.
"The newsletter isn't a huge weekly writeup," explained Carla Hanzlik,
who edits the monthly OS/2 For You publication for Warp Expo West's sponsoring organization.
"It's in an easy-to-read format with headlines and a quick paragraph for each,
so people know we're on top of all the details and that they'll have the experience
of their life once they get here."
In fact, the show's byline -- "A Warpfest Of OS/2 Excitement" -- says
it all. "That's why we chose the Chapman Conference Facilities near Disneyland,"
said Steve Schiffman, the Warp Expo West facilities planner. "It's big enough
for us to do anything we want. Did you see the picture on our web page? It's huge.
We're not using the entire building, but we've already expanded the show size once
and it's certainly nice to have all that space available."
The Warp Expo West web pages, complete with the free registration form and pictures
of the conference facilities, begin at http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest/
"The Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) is sponsoring this event
because we care about OS/2," said Terry Warren, President of SCOUG. "We've
made the show free so more people can attend the seminars and lectures, talk with
the exhibitors, see the new software and meet the other OS/2 users of the world.
Warp Expo West is something special, something that is for the people, the users,
the vendors, the proponents, the *community* that uses OS/2."
Sponsored by The Southern California OS/2 User Group.
IBM has released Communicator 4.61 (Preview) for download.
Go to: http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp/netscape/
If you haven't registered here before, you'll need to register to download it.
The registration is free. as is the download.
Currently avaialble is the US English, France and a new Plug-in Pack.

I see that there are some rumours about OS/2 Netlabs projects out there, including
Win32-OS/2, Opera and Mame. I think it is important to let you know what is going
on actually.
As you can see most of the OS/2 Netlabs pages are really out of date, this is
mainly because I started studying computer science one year ago and also because
OS/2 Netlabs is growing incredible.
We have a lot of new projects at OS/2 Netlabs, a lot of them are still behind
the scene and because of this offical announcements are missing until now. Currently
I am working together with the guys at http://www.os2.org,
they are supporting me in providing up to date webpages which will be generated
with PHP3 and MySQL.
I am sure I will find the time to finish the work with the new design this summer
vacation. Please understand that I can't do everything, OS/2 Netlabs is simply too
big to maintain it alone and because of this I have to change some things actually.
I am sure you will like the result!
Beside this I have to work to get some money, live is expensive in Switzerland
:-) (If there are some very rich people out there which can support me, let me know
;-))
Now some updates:
For those of you who don't know it yet: Win32-OS/2 got a new name, it is now
called Project Odin (http://www.netlabs.org/odin/).
The XLib port (aka EverBlue) still needs more developers, if you are interested,
let us know! The (out of date) Homepage of the project is located at http://www.netlabs.org/everblue/
As Marty already wrote in another message, MAME got an update. Maybe I will find
some time to update the pages at OS/2 Netlabs, until then you can find the new version
at Hobbes (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu).
Some of you already know it: OS/2 Netlabs is currently working on an OS/2 port
of the well known Opera Webbrowser. We use our new Odin Project to do the OS/2 port
and because of this we hope to have a working version of Opera for OS/2 in the near
future. More information about Opera can be found at http://www.operasoftware.com
Please *don't* register the Windows version if you want to use the OS/2 port in
the future, there will be *no* crossgrade from Windows to OS/2.
Stay tuned and enjoy the work we did, more will come soon!

Webmaster @ OS/2 Netlabs
The IOMEGA driver for OS/2 which controls the parallel port version of the Zip
100 drive no longer works with the new version of the drive.
The reason for this is that IOMEGA ran out of the controller chips used in the
100 and replaced them with the chip from the 100+ drive which auto detects between
SCSI and Parallel port.
IOMEGA are resistant to requests to upgrade the driver and so we are gathering
information about customers.
We need to know of companies who use parallel port drives and have hit this issue
or intend to buy new drives and will thus encounter the issue.
While individual members of the public are not necessarily of use when we make
our case it would be handy to know what the installed base of units running os/2
and if anyone has had to return their drive because of this issue.
Basically the more data we have the better case we have to take to IOMEGA.
So if you have any information please contact me.
This article was posted by someone who didn't really know what they were talking
about. I just wanted to straighten some things up. It's my own fault because I didn't
have enough time to post to WarpCast myself. I won't let this happen in the future.
The article states:
After 7 months of inactivity someone released another os/2 version of MAME (.35b11)...
it's available from http://www.emux.com/cgi-bin/download/emu-download.cgi?/emufiles/mame-os235b11.zip
The last one was 0.34 (quite outdated)...
Firstly, I'd like to state that those 7 months of "inactivity" were
the 7 months it took me to completely revamp the GUI and completely rewrite from
scratch the sound routines. I was quite active, but produced no releasable results.
Secondly, "someone" didn't release it. I released it. I didn't want
anyone thinking that it may not be an "official" version or that it was
from a different author that is not a member of the MAME development team.
Thirdly, it was touted as version .35b11 in the message. I specified it as .35b11
pre-release (alpha level code). The sound system is experimental, and there are
some bugs that make it less than what I would call a release. I am going to follow
up on this with a real release soon, but I wanted to put something out there before
any more time elapses so people don't think the project is dead.
Lastly, some people out there seem to have the wrong version of a DLL needed
by MAME (GPMIXER.DLL). For anyone that gets a SYS0127 (IIRC) for GPMIXER.11 or something
like that, they need to grab:
http://www.rit.edu/~mta3206/gpmixer.zip
or
http://www.davesvgc.com/files/arcade/mame/emulators/gpmixer.zip
The full feature list was posted to Dave's Videogame Classics on July 4th (http://www.davesvgc.com)
and to the usenet group comp.os.os2.games. I will make it a point to add WarpCast
to the list of sites I keep up to date in the future.
The comic strip "Help Desk" has been running in OS/2 e-Zine! (http://www.os2ezine.com)
since 1996. Now, it also has its own web site, Ubersoft.net (http://www.ubersoft.net).
While the latest and greatest strips will still be shown in OS/2 e-Zine! first,
readers will be able to easily browse through Help Desk archives, without having
to track them down in the back issues on the OS/2 e-Zine! site.
I also plan to start putting out the strip more regularly. I'm shooting for one
a week at the outset, maybe more, but don't expect this to be a daily strip like
User Friendly. At least, not initially. My schedule's far too hectic to take on
that kind of insanity...
The Larsen Commander has reached its eighth public release, which is version
0.98. You can download it and find more information at:
http://home.sol.no/~leilarse/lcmd/index.html
Larsen Commander is a fine 32-Bit GUI File Manager for OS/2 Warp that has a "look
and feel" that is much like the famous Norton Commander. The most notable difference
is that Larsen Commander is pure GUI and still has a built in command line and a
scrollable console monitor. Powerful, nice and snappy.
Squid internet caching proxy was updated again to reflect changes in main unix
Squid app. Most fixes are in SNMP area and in Delay Pools functions.
Squid is a small yet powerful proxy for *ix based machines available for OS/2
too. You may grab latest Squid from:
BTW: As I am also a maintainer of GNOME/2 project I am glad to present you some
screenshots with new Alpha version of Gnome Midnight Commander - you may find them
at ftp://merlin.itep.ru/incoming/test.jpg
and ftp://merlin.itep.ru/incoming/test_1.jpg

A recent (7/10/99; http://www.os2ss.com/warpcast/wc3706.html)
story expressed concern that REBOL, a Internet messaging language being developed
for a variety of operating systems was no longer being developed for OS/2. I contacted
the REBOL people and just received the following good news in reply from Gary Alton
<gary@rebol.com>:
-----------------
Ralph,
The OS/2 version is being tested and should be available in a few weeks.
Thanks for your interest in REBOL.

This is to announce that the MIDI Station Sequencer site has found a new home.
Dinosoft has been kind enough to host the site. The new location is:
http://www.dinosoft.it/~midistation/
There you can see and download the latest beta of the sequencer released today
- Beta 4. Also if you've ever wanted to use the sequencer but had problems using
RTMIDI then you should look at the new information at the site because it answers
all of your questions. Now Theta Band's new MPU driver overcomes most, if not all,
of the problems users were having in the past with IBM's old MPU drivers!! Even
Creative Labs (Soundblaster) cards can work with RTMIDI now!!
So take a visit to the MIDI Station Sequencer homepage - you'll be glad you did.
Again, thanks to Dinosoft!!
This is to announce that the latest version of MIDI Station Sequencer is now
available! This is the last beta before the products goes GA. There are many new
features, improvements and fixes in this version.
MIDI Station Sequencer features:
And there are many, many others. In short the most advanced Digital Audio/MIDI
sequencer for OS/2!!
There are a few bugs that were fixed, some changes and more documentation was
added.
You can take a look at it and download a copy at:
http://www.dinosoft.it/~midistation/

I have just received the following response from Elsa USA. This is disappoiting
news for anyone who has just purchased their products, especially since they do
make high-quality video cards which carry a guarantee of six (6) years.

Dear User,
Sorry it has taken awhile to get back to you but we needed to make sure on our end if there is a solution for you. Unfortunately there is'nt. The drivers are for OS/2 Warp 4. There are no drivers for OS/2 Server, so you are limited to the drivers that come with OS/2. We do not know if there will be drivers in the future.
Regards, ELSA Tech Support

I have put a small (of course free) fortune cookie utility that contains the
terrific FreeBSD 3.2 cookie database online at
http://www.qdrei.de/knowebledge/soft/fortune_100.zip
(about 1.4mb including the database) Admittedly the tool is not very fast but
should be usable anyway on modern computers.
