IBM Sending Head Development Manager
To Speak At Warp Expo West

Steven King, Development Manager for IBM's OS/2 Warp Server For e-Business and WorkSpace On-Demand products, is now a scheduled lecturer at Warp Expo West.

King is leading the IBM team that will showcase their new and existing e-Business products, all based on the OS/2 platform. The team will both present seminars on these products and demonstrate the products in the exhibit area of the show.

"OS/2 Warp Server For e-Business and WorkSpace On-Demand are very key elements of the overall e-business solutions for our customers," said King during a phone conversation from his office in Austin, Texas. "With that base platform in place, we can then build a very robust e-business solution by adding additional IBM products such as our Lotus Domino server family, IBM WebSphere for web-based applications, our extremely powerful DB2 database products, our security offerings, IBM's advanced Java technology and, of course, network computing. I'll be showing all of this in the presentations."

Rollin White, Chairman of Warp Expo West, called IBM's presence "a perfect fit" with the show's audience. "Warp Expo West guests want and need business solutions that will do exactly what IBM can deliver," said White, "and at Warp Expo West they'll be able to see these products in action, learn how to get them installed and running, and ask questions and discuss solutions directly with members of the IBM development team."

"We're developing a fully-featured web site right now for fourth-quarter rollout," said one southern California entrepreneur in the finance industry. "We're using several IBM VisualAge products plus their DB2 database, and Warp Expo will hit at a perfect time for us because our developers will be ready at that point to put all the pieces together. Having IBM right there in front of you and giving you the direct answers you need will probably save us several weeks of development time."

And Terry Warren, President of The Southern California OS/2 User Group which sponsors Warp Expo West, was also pleased that show attendees would have this opportunity to meet and speak with King. "IBM continues to add value to the OS/2 platform, the platform we have all found to be the most stable, flexible and robust of anything in the marketplace," said Warren. "With Steven's and IBM's presence at Warp Expo West, our guests will now be able to see the IBM e-business solutions that run on top of OS/2."

Warp Expo West is the free international OS/2 expo being held on September 18 in southern California. The web site is at http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest

Here is a an unfortunate article to read by one of IBM's leaders. Look towards the bottom to see the words discussing the OS/2 client future. Not a happy read.

I have added the "InfoColl" program to my website. This is a REXX program that searches one or more system drives for HLP and INF files, and for each file found, creates a VIEW.EXE program object in a designated folder. It provides a simple way of collecting a central list of references to every HLP and INF file on a system.

WarpUP! Client Volume 1 Issue 2 is now available.

The release was delayed in hope that a new Netscape would be available. Since that turned out to be a new beta, WarpUP! still uses Communicator 4.04 as the recommended Netscape client. (Comm. 4.61 is included on the CD as an "extra")

This release of the WarpUP! CD has added ...
- newer IBM fixpaks (Fixpak 11, Peer 8412, etc)
- automatic application of some, previously, manual fixes.
- Updated OS/2 installation diskettes
- various device drivers

Check out the full list of what's included here: http://www.indelible-blue.com/product/IBI202

The Server CD will be available in two weeks.

I have modified the OS2CDROM.DMD driver based on the source of the Developer Connection Device Driver Kit (http://service.software.ibm.com/ddk/).

I have made the following modifications:

You will find additional information why I have done this and the modified driver on http://sites.netscape.net/efueloep/cdromnew/index.html

If you are only interested in the Plextor CDROM fix than I suggest you use the updated official OS2CDROM.DMD. IBM has recently added this fix to it. You can find the official new version of OS2CDROM.DMD on the OS/2 Device Driver Pak On-Line (http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html/cdromdri/os_2cdro/index.htm)

It is part of IDEDASD.EXE.

You will find three little freeware utilities for OS/2 at my homepage :

  1. NumLock : this utility sets the NumLock state to on. It works with PM, Textmode and DOS & WinOS2
  2. UpdSig : this utility adds a line to your News/Mail signature containing the system's uptime
  3. UpdIni : copies the OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI to a RamDisks for faster access and back to harddisk in a given interval perhaps you find them useful.

I have updated the "InfoColl", "KeybUSBR", and "RexxComm" programs on my website. I mistakenly assumed that a running system would also have the REXX utilities library loaded (actually, I'm so used to them being automatically loaded at boot time, I simply forgot all about them). Running the old versions of the REXX programs will result in an error on a system on which the REXX utilities are not loaded beforehand. This has now been corrected.

I have added the "Keyboard US/BR274" program to my website. This is a tiny REXX program that switches between the US and BR274 keyboard definitions (and vice versa) and updates its own program object icon to reflect the new keyboard state. I use it as a toggle button on the OS/2 task bar (Launchpad). An installation program is included.

I'm happy to announce that Moneydance 2.0.3 is now available.

Please check it out at http://seanreilly.com/java/moneydance/

Version 2.0.3 includes new features such as check printing, and a new Income/Expense report. In addition, clicking on column headers now sorts transactions, currency fields now accept math expressions, the home-page now includes a total value of all accounts in the base currency, and many minor improvements and bug fixes have been made. Functions involving printing should work much better on OS/2 now, working around a bug in OS/2 Java where all text is printed in an extremely small font.

[WarpCast Moderator's Note: Moneydcance is a personal finance application written in Java.]

Got IRC? Like the milk ads, it's not everything, but it is an important addition to many of our activities. Warp users are getting spread thin, we can't all get together to discuss our needs and successes. With IRC Chat, we can!

SCOUG and Webbnet host several scheduled events every week. Mondays we have a Warp Help Desk. If you have problems, we can help. If you have solutions, we'll appreciate your support. Wednesdays we have an Internet Special Interest Group. Saturdays we have a new group we call Warp Systems, where we talk about technical topics relating to the management and evolution of Warp based systems.

We hope you can join us! Find out how, and read details about these and other IRC opportunities on our web site at http://www.scoug.com/chat. We also work closely with the pioneers of OS/2-based chat at VOICE (http://www.os2voice.org). They're hosting a get-together this Saturday. Hope you can join in that very important discussion, too.

Chat is simple yet powerful, and it can give us the means to pool our understanding of this system, and to develop ideas for its future. We hope to see you there!

Some time ago I created a little C program to solve some problems that I was having with Auto Wget Daemon. Well, I was developing it with the help of some friends, and the result was a good program called AutoGet/2. It is like an "enhanced" Auto Wget Daemon, and I invite you to try it.

Unfortunately, I lost the source code, and so I'll not be able to support it, BUT I have been using it for 6 months and I had no problems.

Hope you all like it. It is available to download on

If you like it, please, tell me!

Juan Manuel Vuletich has released a current Squeak ported for OS2. Get it at:

http://www.sugarweb.com/squeak/ports/os2native/os2english.htm

Squeak is the open source smalltalk. It comes with, or rather is, an entire development environment with many surprises. Squeak applications run bit-identical on just about every OS and hardware architecture in common (and not so common) use.

Juan's port includes full network access and handles native sound and uses DIVE for fast video. This latest version of Squeak comes with Midi support, a web browser and server, an email application, shockwave support, a 3D animation system, remote update and authoring, and more. By the way, Squeak is written in itself - you can inspect, change and extend any part of the language, application, or even the virtual machine, while it is running.

Smalltalk is a pure OO language that been around for a long time. Squeak is a dialect that is highly compatible with Smalltalk-80 (the historical standard). The team behind Squeak includes the original authors of Smalltalk (including Alan Kay of PARC fame). They mostly hide out at Disney (after living at Apple for a few years). Squeak is evolving rapidly.

Squeak should be of special interest to the OS2 community. This is a this is a state-of-the-art cross-platform language and development system. It deserves a careful look by everyone interested in OO programming. It is also way more fun. (WARNING: this stuff is addictive).

IBM Joins Warp Expo West !!

"We are extremely pleased to announce that IBM will be both a presenter and an exhibitor at Warp Expo West," said Rollin White, Warp Expo West Chairman, to a delighted OS/2 crowd of businessmen, network engineers, software vendors and other OS/2 enthusiasts attending the recent general meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group.

"IBM will be sending members of their national team to give our Warp Expo West guests more information on both new and existing IBM products for the OS/2 platform," continued White, "and we shall do everything we can to make sure that these OS/2 products and IBM's representatives are an integral part of Warp Expo West."

The Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG) is the sponsoring organization for this September's "A Warpfest Of OS/2 Excitement - Warp Expo West".

Following the announcement, the audience was elated that IBM would be present in such force. "This shows IBM's commitment to OS/2," said Paul Wirtz, Vice President of SCOUG. "I am personally very excited."

"I've installed OS/2 on so many office machines and networks over the years that I can do it in my sleep," said one audience member during a break. "It simply never fails. It's Y2K compliant. There's a brand new version out. And IBM will be there with their OS/2 people. I'm going to suggest very strongly that my entire department attend this show."

Steve Schiffman, Facilities Coordinator for Warp Expo West, was also thrilled. "IBM's presence will certainly attract both more attendees and more vendors," said Schiffman, "and we will add as many additional rooms as necessary to ensure that all guests and exhibitors are accommodated in a comfortable, professional manner."

Warp Expo West is the free international OS/2 expo being held near Disneyland in southern California. The web site is at http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest

"This is our third annual OS/2 show," said Terry Warren, President of SCOUG, "and we've expanded it every year to keep pace with new developments in OS/2 software products, including the many new offerings from IBM. Each time IBM adds OS/2 products or increases the functionality of existing ones, we get technologically farther and farther ahead of the competition. We have the Y2K readiness that other platforms don't; we have IBM's outstanding development tools; we have their robust server and database products. The stability of OS/2 and its associated products has shown time and again that it's both a better solution and less costly to maintain, and we look forward to seeing OS/2 users and IBM join together this September for a view of the future, an OS/2 and IBM future, at Warp Expo West."

Sponsored by The Southern California OS/2 User Group.
