OS/2 FixPak 11 and 41 Reissue and Y2K implications

In an effort to reduce the size of FixPak downloads, IBM separated out Device Drivers from OS/2 base product FixPaks. The intention was to create a Base Device Driver FixPak that could be applied to both OS/2 Warp 3 and Warp 4 products. This eliminated the need to ship the same files on both product FixPak's, thereby reducing the size of those FixPak's.

We had intended to release the Base Device Driver FixPak at the same time as we released OS/2 Warp 4 FP 11, and OS/2 Warp 3 FP 41. Due to technical delays the Base Device Driver FixPak has not yet been released. It has further come to our attention, that in some specific cases, device drivers on the Base Device Driver FixPak were needed to make some systems Year 2000 Ready.

If your system was already Year 2000 Ready due to the application of a prior FixPak that made your system Year 2000 ready, you do not have to worry or do anything further. You are still Year 2000 Ready.

If your system was at GA level, or a FixPak level that did not make your system Year 2000 Ready, and you have applied the original FixPak 11 or 41 already, you have a few choices on ways to make your system Year 2000 Ready.

1.Download the Year 2000 Clock Device Driver that was not included in FixPak 11 or 41 and install it. This will make your system Year 2000 Ready.

2.IBM has refreshed and replaced today (dated 7/30/99) OS/2 Warp 4 FixPak 11 and OS/2 Warp 3 FP 41 (for the restricted FP 41, please contact IBM Service Line). Apply the newly released FixPak for your system, it will only replace the Clock Device Driver, and thus make your system Year 2000 Ready.

3.Review URL http://ps.boulder.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/getobj.pl?/pdocs-usa/fixnews.html#y2knew for the 2 instances of the Clock fixes that were required for Year 2000 Readiness. Neither of these instances might pertain to your system, and if this is the case, you do not need to apply the Clock Device Driver to be Year 2000 Ready or do anything further.

In all future OS/2 Base Product FixPak's, IBM will include any Device drivers that have Year 2000 fixes in them, as well as including those drivers in the Base Device Driver FixPak's.

There's an interesting editorial by Chris Wenham, Editor of OS2Ezine about the future of that publication posted at http://www.os2ezine.com/ubb/Forum15/HTML/000008.html. Chris details some of the problems the publication has run into as well as its plans and options for the future. For anyone just interested in the bottom line, it appears that OS2Ezine will resume publication sometime next month.

Well, the main reason for this was a major rewrite of most parts of Wanda's code (if you could have taken a look, you'd have seen why it was necessary ;-) which took some time.

For those among you, who don't know already: Wanda is a program that allows you to create lots of little "sticky notes" on your OS/2 desktop, in which you can write down all kinds of valuable (or not so ...) information.

Apart from the better looking source code there are also a number new features; I fixed some bugs (and probably introduced a large number of brandnew ones ... ;-) and added some stuff requested by users and from my own ideas:

One drawback: The find/replace had to be disabled for technical reasons in this version ...

Wanda is still free (well, mailware to be exact :-)

Download it either from the homepage
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/CIP/thielen/wanda/
or from Hobbes

The Larsen Commander has reached its ninth public release, which is version 0.98.1. You can download it and find more information at:

http://home.sol.no/~leilarse/lcmd/index.html

Larsen Commander is a fine 32-Bit GUI File Manager for OS/2 Warp that has a "look and feel" that is much like the famous Norton Commander. The most notable difference is that Larsen Commander is pure GUI and still has a built in command line and a scrollable console monitor. Powerful, nice and snappy.

Changes since the previous public release Add: The INFO panel can now be activated and navigated by using the keyboard.

Fix: The "Re-Scan Drive" command didn't work in release 0.98.

Fix: The scrollbars of the INFO panel was not always updated correctly when panel size was changed.

Fix: Giving command "XXX /?" was not transfered to the shell even if XXX was defined to always be transfered to the shell.

Fix: Command for changing filename case didn't work at all since version 0.98.

Fix: File panel was not fully cleared after deleting all files from root directory in FULL mode.

Due to continued demand for PCs with non-Microsoft operating systems, OS/2 Headquarters is pleased to announce the following special arrangement. Nashville, Tennessee - based PC wholesaler Tech Ware Computers will now make available its custom-built systems without an operating system, if the purchaser so desires. In return, OS/2 Headquarters will supply technical information to Tech Ware to help them to improve their service to the OS/2 community.

Tech Ware Computers is an established PC dealer that caters to the small-business computer consultants and retailers in the Nashville area. Tech Ware uses only standard, non-proprietary components for maximum upgrade capability and ease of service. Each order is custom-configured with the user's choice of motherboard, CPU, memory capacity, hard drive capacity, and other components.

As Tech Ware is not equipped to make retail sales, only out-of-state or other tax-exempt buyers may take advantage of this opportunity. As demand for MS-free systems increases, Tech Ware may be willing to make adjustments to better serve the OS/2 user community. Contact information can be found on the OS/2 Headquarters home page (http://www.os2hq.com/).

I recently sent a mail to VMWare, asking them for OS/2 support, either as host OS, or at least as "client" OS. The reply from them was that I should follow their web pages in the future, since they were planning on expanding the number of platforms supported. They also said they had received a number of requests for OS/2 support. Now I was afraid that this was another "automated reply", so I replied to the mail and asked if this was so. One minute later I got the reply: "I must be getting good at this if my emails seem auto-response like. There is a good chance that OS/2 will be supported but I do not have a firm date. My take would be by the end of the year at the latest."

So.. I urge everyone to send a mail to "sales@vmware.com", letting them know of your interest in VMWare supporting OS/2.

For those who do not know: VMWare is a piece of software that (currently) lets you run DOS, Windows95/98/NT, Linux, and FreeBSD in an emulated x86 virtual machine, all at the same time, using either Linux or Windows NT as the "host" operating system. My hope is that they also start supporting OS/2 as at least a "client", but preferably as host os, since that's the most logical thing to do, considering OS/2's superior stability and multitasking.

The Sales and Distribution group, IBM Americas, is seeking applicants for up to three open positions in the United States Central Region, specializing in Network Computing Software (SecureWay).

The Network Computing Software (SecureWay) Division is responsible for a wide variety of IBM software products, including most host integration solutions (Host On-Demand, Personal Communications, Communications Server, etc.), the Warp family of products, WorkSpace On-Demand, much of IBM's security-related portfolio of products, and more. Technical skills in any of these areas is a definite plus.

Successful applicants would join IBM as Field Technical Sales Specialists. An FTSS helps relate the technical aspects of IBM products to customer sales (and vice versa). These special individuals must be effective communicators of technical information, and, most importantly, be able to apply this technical expertise to "real world" problem solving. FTSSes routinely participate in pilots, demonstrations, proof of concepts, and other pre-sales activities to facilitate customer sales and satisfaction.

The U.S. Central Region includes a geographic area encompassing western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and the St. Louis metro area. Typically an FTSS would travel a moderate amount, usually within a three state portion of this region. ("Day trips" are common but not onerous.) Although IBM would prefer applicants willing to be based in Cleveland, Detroit, or Chicago, many possible "home bases" within this region are possible.

This region is home to some of the most well-known and largest international companies. FTSSes will routinely work with top IBM customers in a variety of industries, from banking to auto manufacturing. An FTSS also enjoys access to IBM's vast wealth of technical knowledge and expertise, often working directly with the development lab staff.

IBM offers exceptional salaries, generous benefits, and an attractive incentive plan. Talented employees are well rewarded.

If you believe you'd make a great addition to the IBM team, and if you'd like to find out more about applying for one of these FTSS positions, please contact Timothy Sipples by e-mail (tsipple@us.ibm.com) or by phone (312-245-4003).

There's a new release of Swift Generator, and it's available also for OS/2:

http://www.swift-tools.com/

Swift-Generator is a Dynamic Flash Content generator. It aims at dynamically replacing texts, fonts, sounds, images and movie clips in either a Template file or a standard Flash file.

It can also dynamically change action parameters in either frames or buttons.

This allows Webmasters to create dynamic content such as stock-exchange values, sport scoring, weather values, news tickers and the like. Swift-Generator only requires an authoring tool like Macromedia Flash 3. Once a Flash file is created, Swift-Generator is able to handle it.

Hello,

I'm pleased to announce a new OS/2 software product, released under my "Warphouse" free- and shareware label.

It's "FileCheq 1.0 for AntiVirus" and it's the third product of a line of AntiVirus tool add-ons.

FileCheq 1.0 provides a easy-to-use PM front end for the IBM Anti-Virus follow-up product Symantec Norton AntiVirus.

If you're user of Symantec's new OS/2 virus protection suite, you will be pleased by this little add-on called "FileCheq". FileCheq makes it as simple as possible to check single files or entire directories for virus infections. Just drag the file or directory object onto the FileCheq object, and see what the Norton AntiVirus is reporting on this object.

FileCheq 1.0 comes with install script, three-language support (english, german, dutch) and some nice-to-have features.

See screenshots and information, and download the software at http://www.warphouse.de or visit the Warphouse section in the OS/2 A Vendors Forum on CompuServe (GO OS2AVEN).

FileCheq 1.0 for AntiVirus is free for non-commercial use. Prices for commercial use, please consult the readme file or contact the author via mail: cm@warphouse.de

We're looking for a couple of UK based Java developers to help develope a system using VAJ, JSP DB2 and lots of interesting technologies.

I'm not particularly worried about having years of industry experience (although that would be nice), but I'm after people with a good attitude, hard working ethic, and a knowledge of Java and preferably Rexx.

I'd be happy with a couple of university students, or maybe some older programmers.

Please reply by email.

Warp Expo West announces Vendor100 Plan
for OS/2 Software Developers

Warp Expo West has announced a very special plan for OS/2 software developers and vendors.

"We're calling it our Vendor100 plan," said Warp Expo West Chairman Rollin White, "and it is free, absolutely free, no strings attached of any type. We want to make sure that OS/2 software developers and vendors everywhere, whether they make use of one of our free exhibitor tables or not, have a presence at Warp Expo West."

The Vendor100 plan, as explained by White, is quite simple. Any OS/2 software developer of any size can have their software displayed at Warp Expo West, and any other OS/2 offering can likewise be promoted. If the developer or vendor cannot attend, the Warp Expo West staff will fill in.

"If you have an existing OS/2 software product," said White, "you can sign up for free for Vendor100. If you offer an OS/2 service of any kind, you can sign up for free for Vendor100. If you've published an OS/2 book, or you host an OS/2 oriented web site, or if you have any other product or service related to OS/2, you can sign up for free for Vendor100."

The benefits of being a part of Vendor100 are striking. "For starters, you get your product or service onto the Warp Expo West web site as soon as you sign up, so right away you're getting additional exposure," explained Carla Hanzlik, the Warp Expo West webmistress. "Then, you'll get front line exposure at Warp Expo West even if you haven't reserved one of our free exhibit tables. We'll make sure your product materials get into the hands of the Warp Expo West attendees." Hanzlik described the Vendor100 plan while she was busily designing new web pages for Warp Expo West. "If you have brochures, or a printout of your web site, or demo CDs or diskettes, or promotional items of any kind, we'll make sure those items are received by our guests and available on our special Vendor100 tables. And our staff will be at these tables to direct guests to the particular types of products they're looking for, so not a single Vendor100 product will be overlooked by any attendee."

Signing up for Vendor100 is easy. "Email me," said White, "and we'll get you signed up for free. Every attendee who comes to Warp Expo West wants to see OS/2 products and services. They want to know the large offerings, the shareware and freeware, the books and websites that will give them the tools they need and solve the problems they have."

To join Vendor100 for free, email Rollin White at Rollin@scoug.com.

"Vendor100 will give your product or service a free presence at Warp Expo West," continued White, "and we want every single OS/2 developer and vendor to be represented there."

Steve Schiffman, the Warp Expo West facilities manager, was especially pleased with the planning he's having done for the exhibit hall and the Vendor100 displays. "We've carefully measured the rooms and located every electrical outlet and network connection," said Schiffman, "and we're making complete floor diagrams showing lighting, tables, aisles and doorways. Every exhibitor will be included in the high-traffic area, and the Vendor100 tables will be specially located to maximize their impact and to move guests past all of the exhibitors who have taken one of our free exhibitor tables."

Warp Expo West, "A Warpfest of OS/2 Excitement", is free for guests and exhibitors alike. The show takes place on September 18 in sunny Southern California, and the web pages are located at http://www.scoug.com/warpexpowest

"Vendor100 is another means for promoting OS/2 products," concluded White. "With the product literature and samples in front of the attendees and the vendors' online ordering systems in place, we hope to connect a lot of OS/2 users with the programs and services they need."

Sponsored by The Southern California OS/2 User Group.

Archive Name: run.zip

Short Description: Simple PM program launcher simliar to the winxx run dialog

Long Description: Run.exe is a simple program launcher simliar to the win9x run dialog. It will store the last 10 commands you ran. It is set up to open a file with the default association or to run a program if a program is passed. If the browsers are entered, it will also launch your browser and try to connect to a URL if http, www., ftp: or ftp. are the first four characters entered.

Current version is at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/run.zip but will eventually move to /pub/os2/util/wps

Changed from original:

  1. Changed the dialog box to select the last program ran.
  2. Changed the file-open filter to look for all files
  3. Added a check for a blank program entry to avoid a syntax error. Run will now exit with rc=1.
  4. Added the ability to open a file by association as well as open a URL.
  5. Fixed a delay problem when opening web pages where the run dialog would stay up after clicking OK.
  6. Changed the syntax to run under classic rexx as well as object rexx after my E-mail box was flooded :-)
  7. Squashed a bug that prevented it from being run properly from a root directory.
  8. Increased the browser file name length.
  9. Allowed a parameter to be passed to the called program.
  10. It will now search the path for exe, com, cmd and bat files (in that order) if no path or extension info is given.
  11. Added some intelligence to the history sort.
  12. Added the ability to launch the browser if www. or ftp. are entered.

Here's a little news coming from The Register:

"Sun is poised to buy German software company StarDivision, according to Germany's c't. The magazine says that a deal is rumoured to be ready to roll next month, with Star Division poised to become a wholly-owned Sun subsidiary, under the banner StarOffice GmbH."

Hope, if that comes true, they'll keep it multiplaform.

I just released version 3.01 of the DFSee utility, which has some windowing enhancements, more LVM display and some fixes (mainly DFSDOS).

The text-based windowing system implements a command-line with a history buffer so previous commands can be recalled and edited easily. Also, the output goes to a large scrollable window so you can page back and forth.

For those of you that don't know DFSee yet, DFSee is an FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems.

Because of the targeted use for DFSee it is a command-line and text-only utility (no GUI). At the moment OS/2, Win-NT and DOS versions exist.

I would very much like to hear some experiences you have with DFSee and the new user-interface, either positive or negative.

And for Warp-server-for-e-bussines users (Aurora), I am very interested in some real-life output for JVM volumes, created with the 'part', 'part +' and 'Plist lvm' commands.

You can get DFSee from my web-site: http://www.fsys.demon.nl

With some delay, it will be on HOBBES as well ...

Warpstock 99 Announces Official Hotel and Airline

The Warpstock Board of Directors and Warpstock 99 Committee are pleased to announce the designation of the Sheraton Gateway Hotel, Atlanta Airport as the official hotel, and Delta Airlines as the official airline of Warpstock 99. The recently renovated Sheraton Gateway Hotel is a beautiful property immediately adjacent to the Georgia International Convention Center. Warpstock attendees will not have to leave the building to travel between their rooms and the conference space. The Warpstock committee was able to negotiate a very attractive rate structure starting at US$89.00 per night single or double occupancy! For extra savings attendees can triple up for US$99.00 per night and even share a room among four people for only US$109.00 per night. Children under 18 may share their parent's room free of charge. "We can't emphasize enough" said a spokesperson for Warpstock, "that this represents not just a great room rate, but a great place to stay." The Warpstock spokesperson went on to note that the committee had visited the hotel and spent two nights there before making the decision to designate the Sheraton as Warpstock's official hotel. "Make sure you try the Southern Fried Catfish before you leave." Added the spokesperson. The special room rates will be in effect from October 13, 1999 through October 20, 1999.

For those traveling by air the Warpstock 99 Committee has arranged a special rate with Delta Air Lines, one of the worlds great air carriers. Depending on how and when you make your reservations discounts of 5%, 10% and 15% will be available. Details of the discounts will be posted on the Warpstock website.

The Warpstock 99 Committee is expecting to receive the registration codes for both the Sheraton and Delta by Tuesday, July 27. So visit the Warpstock website, http://www.warpstock.org for the codes and additional details.
