DualMode library and MGLServer release 5 available

The DualMode library and MGLServer are an application interface for developers to write graphical applications which can switch between full screen and windowed operation, with advanced features such as keyboard, mouse, and joystick support, frame rate timing and frameskip regulation, and palette handling.

What's new with release 5:

* Frame rate regulation API calls added

Can use Timer0 or DosSleep to regulate the frame rate of your application. Capable of regulating frame skip and frame rate throttling for fast systems. All frame rate options can be changed on-the-fly, including which method is used for timing.

* Color palette manipulation made easier through two new API calls

Don't need to #include "mglserver_internal.h" anymore to manipulate the color palette.

* Added shutdown routines to the DualMode API as a convenience, so that the developer no longer has to know which thread to wait on for safe shutdown.

* Added direct framebuffer DIVE blitters for all color depth combinations. When DIVE is detected to not support a source/destination blit combination (as reported by DiveQueryCaps), one of these direct framebuffer blitters will automatically be chosen instead. Currently, these blitters are SLOW, and will not clip themselves if there is a window placed on top of them. Future enhancements will hopefully address these issues. These were implemented to stop some systems from crashing in DIVE.DLL when an unsupported blitter setup is attempted to be used.

* Added a check to see if WM_SETWINSIZE message attempted to put the titlebar off of the screen. Moves the window so that the titlebar is always available on the screen.

* Bug fixed with MGLSC_reinit causing the wrong video buffer to be displayed full screen when mode is changed to the same video mode but a new backbuffer is created.

* Bug fixed causing video mode corruption when WM_TOGGLEFS is requested while a full screen video mode is being changed.

* Fixed a bug which could lead to popping up the window list instead of returning the window focus to the session that launched a DualMode app when the DualMode app is closed.

* Fixed a bug causing an occasional crash on exit after MGLServer has been shut down if there is a WM_BLITFRAME waiting in the window message queue.

AC 97 and VIA chipset

Some people have contacted me about this driver, asking what the status was. Well VIA released a driver about 1 or 1/2 half years ago. This driver worked in a few cases but was for the rest a disaster (sorry if developers read this). For eComStation I'm working on collecting drivers and getting a license to include them. The VIA driver also has my attention and I have contacted VIA and past along the bugs which where documented in the patch on hobbes. I also had a lot of cases where there was no sound. Or system sounds where played to fast. Also with playing a video file I got a trap.

I passed all this information along. Last week I was told they where working on a new version. All I can say, lets hope it has improved and keep an eye on http://www.via.com.tw When it will be released I don't know. BTW does somebody out there have a VIA motherboard with a BUILT IN nic chipset from VIA. I have drivers that need testing.

ZxMail updated to v1.0.21

fixed in this version:

Proposed Fix: On bad internet connections (lots of dropped packets) would get Failure in smtp dll, changed the routine to call os2_select and changed polling time to 500ms used to be 100ms this should help.

Fixed: Memory overwrite in ZxPop3 had strange effects sometimes, most of the times had no impact.

Info: I am working on adding Rexx support (this will is a major implementation it will take time) and I am working on Alias support which should not be too major (except adding a table to the db which can always create surprises).

We recommend that you update to this level.

ZxMail Server is a full POP3 and SMTP Server.

The main features of ZxMail Server are:

- ZxMail can pull email from other POP3 accounts and redistribute it to a domain by the username or to specific users on any domain. - ZxMail can forward mail to internal or external mailboxes. -ZxMail supports multiple forwards and chaining of those forwards (meaning if a message destined for A and A has a forward to B and B has a forward to C the message for A then goes to C and A can have other forwards). -ZxMail supports multiple domains with no limits
-ZxMail can route email through another SMTP server to save on bandwidth
-ZxMail is multi threaded for maximum performance.
-ZxMail supports IP filtering to block or to allow connection based on an IP address. -ZxMail supports SMTP AUTH command with CRAM-MD5, PLAIN, LOGIN mecanism.

Star Office 6.0 beta

Sun Microsystems has released a beta version of the upcoming StarOffice 6.0. There is not an OS/2 version but I was able to install it using Odin under warp 4.5 MCP. There seems to be much improvement over 5.2 specifically for me is the elimination of the integrated desktop and also it has support for XML file formats. FYI the beta expires March 2002. IsoFS 0.21 released

Chris Wohlgemuth has released IsoFS 0.21

ISOFS is an installable file system for OS/2 to access ISO rawfiles suitable for burning on CD. It allows transparent readonly access to the contents of the raw file. Currently only Joliet filenames are supported but this may change in the future.

New:
V0.2.1, 02.10.2001

Added support for file and directory times which was still missing. Found the solution for the missing notebook pages. You have to tell OS/2 that there's support for EAs even if that's not true.

Beta new Adaptec drivers on testcase

IBM has beta drivers for the Adaptec AIC7870.ADD, AIC78U2.ADD and AICU160.ADD on their testcase site.

From the readme.txt "These are BETA TEST ONLY drivers to resolve issues with long chkdsk and with geometry problems with Adaptec SCSI cards and ZIP drives. Use at your own risk!"

ftp://testcase.boulder.ibm.com/ps/fromibm/os2/newadaptec.zip

As the readme states, use these at your own risk. Also be aware that rarely does anything stay on IBM's testcase site for more then 2-3 days, so if you think you want these get them now.

I have installed the beta AIC7870.ADD driver on a system with a builtin 7870 UW-SCSI controller and have had no problems in the past 3 hours.
