Note that the pages on www.os2warp.be have not been updated yet. But we
are sending out this message to make it known we are working on
addressing the printer support issue!
To often the question comes up what printer you should buy that is
supported on eComStation/OS/2.
About 1 1/2 years ago some news items was sent out in regard to
WIN32PRN. Well WIN32PRN is back on track again.
The project is aimed at running Windows printer drivers on OS/2/eCS.
Printer drivers are basically nothing else then a DLL (a program) that
knows what kind of language the printer needs to be controlled.
Writing native drivers printer drivers for OS/2 is time consuming.
Primarily if you want to, you need specifications from printer vendors
on how to control a printer, which are difficult to get. Then the stage
of debugging a printer driver and also getting optimized print results
takes up too much time.
The project is being developed by Vitaliy Tymchyshyn.
The final goal is come up with a software package that will allow you
to install Windows printer drivers on eComStation/OS/2 and also
configure the printer.
The coming release still require you to install the printer driver on
Windows and export the printer settings. Tools and instructions will be
included in the package how to then install the printer on
OS/2/eComStation. More testing is required.
Mensys will sell the project when its out of the test cycle. The retail
price will be 20 dollars a license.
More news will be published in the coming 10 days on www.os2warp.be.

Hi All,
I've compiled the latest Tar source for OS/2, and it's available from
http://smedley.info/tar-1.15.1-os2.zip
This requires the Innotek GCC 3.3.5 rc1 runtime, that's available from
http://smedley.info/libc06r1.zip
This build of tar fixes the @longlink@ errors on archives with long
filenames that exist with the old tar.exe
There are issues with archives where you specify a drive letter, ie
e:\archive.tar - to resolve these - add --force-local to the command
prompt, or add 'set tar_options=--force-local' to config.sys to make
this the default.
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi All,
Many people who have tested my builds of Sane with USB support have
inquired about support for Tame.
I finally have some good news in this area. I've made contact with
Goran Ivankovic and he is going to send me some information to help add
new scanners.
In the meantime, for users who have tested my Sane builds and would like
to see their scanner supported by Tame, I need the following to be done
(as detailed in the Tame manual)
Execute from the commandline:
scanimage -d device --help >device.txt
(substitute your scanner backend name - eg. plustek for device)
This will produce a file 'device.txt', which can be read with every text
editor.
Send the file device.txt to paulDESPAM@DESPAMsmedley.info, along with:
-The SANE version you used (eg date/time of dlls)
-The scanner model (eg Epson GT5500)
-The name of the device.conf (eg epson.conf)
Cheers,
Paul.
