We are planning a vintage OS/2 museum for this year's Warpstock event in
Hershey, PA (October 6-9). I'm still trying to round up the hardware to
run most of what we will have, but so far it looks like we will have most
of the OS/2 1.x versions, 2.x versions and probably some of the Warp
versions as well. We will also have vintage applications as well, such as
Microsoft Word for OS/2 (yes there actually was both a 16 bit text version
and a PM version of Word), Excel for OS/2, WordPerfect for OS/2, games and
lots of other things you may have never even seen. We also are working on
having a genuine IBM PowerPC running OS/2PPC, which would give people a
chance to see this rarest of IBM releases actually running.
If you have something that you can bring along that you think might be of
interest, please let us know. We will try to have a couple machines
available for playing with. Since we already have a sizable collection of
software, you might want to check that we don't already have it first. We
could use some help with hardware though, so if you have any vintage AT or
PS/2 machines and you can bring it (assuming you are driving), please let
us know. We are trying to avoid having to pay to ship these well built
but extremely heavy machines. If you are looking to donate your equipment
to a good home, we are in the process of looking for a place to house the
collection after the event.
We will need a few volunteers to watch the exhibit area, mainly just to
provide security, but if they are knowledgeable about the vintage versions
of software and hardware that would be helpful, but not required. Anyone
that can help with that, and also setting up the equipment please contact
me - os2museum2005@warpstock.org As at all Warpstock events, access to
the exhibit area is free to all.

Just a reminder that if you have OS/2 or eComStation related news please
send it to:
submit@os2voice.org
Sending it to any other address will at the very least delay its posting
to the VOICE News list and could end up in the post being lost in the
ether.
I will be away on vacation for the next week and Paul Smedley has
graciously agreed to step in as moderator until I return. His help is
really appreciated as is all the work he has been doing as a developer on
the SANE and other OS/2 programming projects.

Some days ago I asked for sponsors to support ROM Logicware to develop
Papyrus 11 for OS/2.
I've got a lot of feedback, thanks a lot to all parties hereto!
Here is the intermediate result:
numbner current sponsors: 18
total amount: ~1.800,- EUR
Later the sponsors will purchase the following licences
13 full versions for OS/2
8 upgrades für OS/2
1 full versions for Windows
4 upgrades for Windows
1 full version for Mac
But unfortunately I think ist not enough, and I hope that there will be
some more sponsors.
If you would like to sponsor the product, then please contact me. Best is
to use the text form, which is available from here:
English form:
http://www.subsys.de/misc/Pap11OS2en.zip
German form:

Please fill it out, and send it to me (per fmail, fax or snail mail). You
will find contact addresses in the form. Please send only the form, no
money at this moment!
I will wait for feedback until Friday, the 29.July05. Then I woll forward
the result to ROM Logicware.

Mozilla is moving towards using Cairo as its rendering engine:
http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roc/archives/2005/04/glimpse_of_the.html
Cairo is a vector graphics library designed to provide high-quality
display and print output. Currently available backends include the X
Window System, OpenGL (via glitz), Quartz, win32, in-memory image buffers,
PNG images, PostScript, and PDF files. Some of these backends are still
experimental. Cairo is designed to produce identical output on all output
media while taking advantage of display hardware acceleration when
available (eg. through the X Render Extension or OpenGL). from [
http://www.cairographics.org/introduction ] (warning: this site uses
transparent png and thus loads _VERY_ slowly in Warpzilla).
Cairo has not been ported to OS/2 as of yet. The 1.9 series is about to
begin (this is when Cairo will begin to be used as the rendering engine).
I have looked at this but I am not a strong programmer and know nothing
of graphics programming so have not gotten anywhere. It looks like the
best route at this time is to base the port off of the Windows port
(really it is the backend that has to be ported which seems to consist of
2 files -font and surface - for each system.

If you are interested in the Papyrus Office Suite for OS/2 I would
recommend putting in a confirmed order. R.O.M. Logicware stated in an
email to me that their decision to release an OS/2 version would largely
depend on the number of confirmed orders. I got the impression that they
had removed OS/2-eCS off of their order list, but, THAT IS NOT THE CASE.
Order from this link.

The OS/2 and eComStation Developers Workshop 2005 was held on July 9th and
10th in Dresden, Germany.
A bit more than one week after the workshop we have now updated the
workshop homepage with some information that can be useful for developers
that could not attend.
1. You can download all presentations. With the exception of the
netlabs.org presentation and the Mozilla presentation you can download all
presentations in a PDF format from the workshop homepage:
http://wiki.netlabs.org/index.php/Developers_Workshop_2005#Download_Presentations
The Mozilla presentation needed to be canceled last minute because of
illness of the presenter.
2. Posters available. We had two posters presented at the Workshop. One
about WDSibyl, a visual pascal development environment and one about the
EDM/2 Tools section. Both are now available for download from the workshop
homepage:
http://wiki.netlabs.org/index.php/Developers_Workshop_2005#Posters
3. Photos! We have published a ZIP file that contains a selection of
photos from the workshop. You can find a link to the ZIP file at the very
end of the Gallery section on the homepage:
http://wiki.netlabs.org/index.php/Developers_Workshop_2005#Gallery
4. Feedback from the attendees. We wanted to find out whether the event
was a success and worth repeating next year. To do that, we handed out
feedback forms at the end of the Workshop. Almost all attendees completed
the form and you can now see the results online:
http://wiki.netlabs.org/index.php/Developers_Workshop_2005#Feedback
A large majority of the attending developers told us that they liked the
weekend and enjoyed talking to other developers. We are now thinking about
repeating the event next year. Most likely, Adrian Gschwend of netlabs.org
will organize the next Workshop.

can be found in the file's WPS notebook under File->Subject.
Fixed
-----
This version fixes all reported problems with the WPS features (e.g.
opening a file instead of downloading it automatically as requested). It
also works around a bug in the WPS which could cause files with multiple
dots in their names to open in the wrong application.
*Important*
-----------
If you've used previous versions of my Firefox or Mozilla builds, please
run RWSREG.CMD before you start Firefox. This will ensure that this build
(and older ones too) use the newest version of RWS. As a safeguard, delete
the copies of rwssrv07.dll and rwscli07.dll in your older Firefox and
Mozilla directories as well. There's no need to copy the new dlls - only
one pair will ever be used.
BTW... the top-level directory in the zipfile is named fx-wps-v1c, so it
won't overwrite any existing firefox directory. If you want to change the
name, do so before you run rwsreg and firefox.

Today development of native applications is nearly at zero. The last
standing vendors you can count on two hands. One of the last vendors is
the company ROM logicware, well known in germany as the developer of the
office software Papyrus. Further development, especially the development
of the upgrade to version 11 (available for Windows and Mac for a long
time) is still in the air for more than 6 months now.
I think its time to do something.
I believe there is enough interest from endusers or companies, which are
able to sponsor the development with an additional financial gift outsite
of the normal licences.
I did the first step with my engineer office, and pitched an amount of 500
EUR into the pot. I have published the initiative, and some other sponsers
have since come around. Currently we are at 1.200,- EUR total, and the
sponsors itself also intend to buy an additional 13 licences. In sum you
can say its a value of over ~2000 EUR.
One condition of the sponsoring would be, that there will be an open beta
test for the upcoming product. Another condition from us would be, that
operating system specific bugs will be fixed.
Ulli Ramps, CEO of ROM logicware said last December, that they would need
at least 100 licences to cover the costs to develop the upgrade to Papyrus
11. Maybe there are some higher requirement to make the version available
in english. But currently there are only ~50 users (counted on the update
from papyrus 9.x to v.10).
I think we (the sponsors) should cover the biggest part of the neccessary
costs, so development should be independent of single user registrations.
If you would like to sponsor the product, then please contact me. Best is
to use the text form, which is available from here:
English form:
http://www.subsys.de/misc/Pap11OS2en.zip
German form:
http://www.subsys.de/misc/Pap11OS2.zip
Please fill it out, and send it to me (per fmail, fax or snail mail). You
will find contact addresses in the form. Please send only the form, no
money at this moment!
kind regards

As it was expected there had been a excessive press on the IBM OS/2
Withdrawal. It is too bad that eComStation, or any other OS/2-eCS software
never gets this amount of press.

There is a quote about the Open Source OS/2 petition on this article.
"A number of OS/2 devotees would love to see the technology given over to
enthusiasts. At OS2World.com, a petition signed by more than 8,000
visitors urges IBM to release OS/2, or as much of it as is legally
possible, as open-source software."
