Mozilla Firefox 1.1a2, codenamed Deer Park, has been released. This
version is considered a "Non-Feature Complete developer preview". In
other words, this is bleeding edge stuff, and probably ill advised for the

It's probably no surprise that eWeek has asked me to write a column about
IBM's announcement (
http://www.ibm.com/isource/cgi-bin/goto?it=usa_annred&on=905-163 ). Since
it's a column, I can write ANYthing. I'd prefer that my column reflect the
views of the OS/2 community, not just my own guesses. Sp I'd like your
opinions... IF YOU DO SO IMMEDIATELY. (I promised to send this in after
lunch, which means I need your input by Friday at 11am MST, which is
GMT-7. I might appreciate your comments after that, but I won't be able to
use them.)
Does IBM's announcement make a difference to you? In what way? What effect
will it have on your technical decisions?
In case I decide to quote you: please let me know how you're using OS/2
("we run our e-mail servers on it"), your name, title, company, geographic
location. (I.e. "Esther Schindler, VP of The Groovy Corporation in
Scotsdale, Arizona, uses OS/2 for her Internet servers, since the OS'
obscurity makes them unhackable.") Since this is for eWEEK, do let me know
if you work in what they'd deem an "enterprise."

I am pleased to announce the release of version 1.0 of Knomos, an Open
Source application for the workflow, project and knowledge management in
law firms and corporate counsel departments. More information is
available at http://www.knomos.org . Languages currently available are
English, Italian, German, Romanian, Bulgarian and Serbo-Croat. French,
Danish and Portoguese are also in the pipeline.
As users of OS/2-eComStation since 1990 and OS/2 2.0, and as a (final?)
gift to a platform and a community which have been integral to my firm's
history for the past 15 years, we really went the extra mile to ensure as
much compatibility as possible with eCS, both on the client *and* on the
server side.
This has not been overly hard, as Knomos is based on MySQL, Apache, PHP,
Java, Firefox and OpenOffice.org (and each of those ingredients can even
be replaced, with varying degrees of difficulty).
Of course, we have no idea of how many potential users of Knomos are
around who may still be interested, but we trust the release of Knomos to
be a serious contribution to the continued viability of eCS as a client
and/or server platform in the abovementioned environments; and
accordingly thought the news to be of potential interest to this list.
Please note that Knomos being an Open Source product, all requests for
support should be addressed to a professionally-qualified, commercial
service provider, or to other users in the public forums made available
by Sourceforge, and *not* to my firm.

No specific OS/2 changes in this - but I've refreshed the Sane source
from CVS.
Am kind of hoping the outstanding plustek issues are due to a problem in
the Sane source :)
The following backend source files have changed since the last release,
potentially fixing some of the reported problems:
avision.c
gt68xx.c
gt68xx_devices.c
gt68xx_generic.c
gt68xx_high.c
leo.c
matsushita.c
plustek-usbshading.c
plustek.c
sceptre.c
teco1.c
teco2.c
teco3.c
As always, builds available from http://smedley.info/sane.html
Cheers,
Paul.

I'm pleased to announce the release of Pronews/2 v1.57
Pronews/2 is a multithreaded NNTP Newsreader program for OS/2.
If you are upgrading from a release prior to 1.54 then you are strongly
urged to backup your existing filter files as the files have a different
on-disk format from 1.54 onwards. Failure to backup files *.FLT in
\pronews and \pronews\headers will mean it will be impossible to use your
filters if you should need to revert to a release prior to 1.54. You
should also read the readme.txt file installed in the \pronews directory
as this covers changes and new features from prior releases as well as
tips for making Pronews/2 quicker.
You can find Pronews/2 1.57 on ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming (later
to be ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/news/reader ) as
pn2v157.zip.
Download Incoming: ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/pn2v157.zip Download
final: ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/news/reader/pn2v157.zip
Pronews/2 is shareware and all profits from its sale are donated to the
charity Save the Children.
Pronews/2 v1.57 is a minor bugfix release and only corrects one problem
found in v1.56 where posts made in US-ASCII were missing the charset name
from the charset= parameter in the header of the article.

From: stellaDESPAM@DESPAMvisual-paradigm.com
Visual Paradigm is pleased to announce that Visual Paradigm for UML 5.0
version has been released which adopts a refreshing new user interface
with numerous tailored modeling and usability guaranteed to satisfy and
impress you.
Visual Paradigm for the Unified Modeling Language (VP-UML) is a
full-featured UML CASE tool supporting real-time bi-directional round-trip
code-model synchronization.
VP-UML supports the latest standards of Java and UML notations so as to
support the full round-trip code generation and code reverse engineering
for Java.
Moreover, VP-UML supports Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) and EJB
Development by acting as a bridge between object model, data model and
relational database, and supports the generation and synchronization of
database and code including POJO and EJB to reduce the development time.
WhatÆs new in VP-UML 5.0?
Brand-new Look and Feel - With the Microsoft Office-like look and feel, it
allows you to select one of the cool themes bundled which makes your
VP-UML looks unique, but also re-arrange the frames, toolbars and menu bar
which you are comfortable with. Other look and feels, like Visual Studio
..NET look and feel and Eclipse IDE look and feel are also available.
Enhanced Visual Modeling Features - The visual modeling features are
enhanced by configurable Toolbar and Menu Bar, Full Screen Diagram
Editing, Visual Alignment Guide, Sweeper, Split Control Flow with Branch
and Real-time Layout for Sequence Diagram.
Enhanced Smart Resources - VP-UML provides Resource-Centric interface
enabling the easy creation of UML diagrams by using the valid editing
resources listed around the diagram elements. Smart Resource becomes even
smarter as the resources of similar nature are grouped together to
minimize the number of visible resources simultaneously.
Use Case Details Editor - VP-UML 5.0 provides an all-in-one environment
for use case modeling, including general model specification, multiple use
case description with rich-text editing, sub-diagrams manipulation and
preview.
Enhanced XMI Import/Export to support UML 2.0 - The import and export of
XMI is enhanced to support XMI 1.2, so you can import and export the UML
2.0 compliant model and diagrams to/from VP-UML. EJB Diagram Support - In
order to enhance the capability of EJB Development, EJB diagram is
provided for user to model their EJB systems.
EJB Code Generation and Deployment - VP-UML simplifies the powerful but
complicated EJB development which supports remote and distributed systems
by generating beans based on the EJB model defined by user.
Customizable SQL - VP-UML generates SQL statements which are ready-to-use.
In some cases you may want to customize the SQL statements, VP-UML allows
you to override the generated SQL statements whenever you want to.
Advanced ORM Features - VP-UML promotes mapping one class to multiple
tables which optimizes the size of database and minimizes the number of
generated classes for system implementation.
Other features
Support of Use Case Scheduling
Support of Textual Analysis
Support Model sharing among diagrams
Mouse Gesture
Modeling with Visio stencils
HTML Report Generation
PDF Report Generation
Report Writer
Code Generation
Code Reverse Engineering
Support of Rose Project import
For more detailed information, please visit:
http://www.visual-paradigm.com/product/vpuml/
Free evaluation is available for 30 days. You can get an evaluation copy
at http://www.visual-paradigm.com/download/ and install VP-UML from Visual

Hi All,
I've made available an updated version of Sane that should be compatible
with Tame at http://smedley.info/tamesane.zip (approx 1.3mb)
Unfortunately, as there is no documentation on scanners.dat it's a bit
hit and miss adding new scanners to scanners.dat, however this should
work with all USB scanners that previously worked with Tame.
To use this: Unzip into the existing Tame Directory.
Copy appropriate .conf file from tame/conf into the tame directory and
edit if required. (eg epson.conf for an Epson backend scanner,
snapscan.conf for a Snapscan backend scanner, etc)
I've hacked scanners.dat to change all references to usbscan$ to epson so
this should work for users with Epson backend scanners that were
previously supported by Tame.
Note that usbcalls.dll (http://smedley.info/usbcalls.zip) and
libc06b5.dll (http://smedley.info/libc06b5.zip) need to be either in the
libpath or in the same path as scanimage.exe
Also note, if the system traps on scanning, an updated usbresmg.sys is
required (http://smedley.info/usbresmg.zip).
Please let me know if this works for you!
Cheers,
Paul.

There have been some interesting developments with the extremely capable
German Wordprocessing and database pragram Papyrus.
The last English language version, 8.23, was released in 2000. However,
since then there has been continuisg development of the German language
versions. They are now at version 11.09 for Windows and MAC, and version
10 for TOS and OS/2.
Recently the English pages of their website
announced that the English language Version of Papyrus XI was now
available.
I looked at the secure order page, and since it appeared that the OS/2
version was available, I put in an order.
I have just received the following reply from Michael Kilby, of Papyrus:
"Please accept my apologies for a technical error on my part.
"Ulli Ramps (our CEO) and I are still in the process of deciding whether
or not we will release Papyrus XI for OS/2 (or possibly just version 10 in
English). Because of this, I had removed all references to OS/2 in the
current price list. Unfortunately, I neglected to comment out the matching
lines in the order form.
We appreciate your order, and will keep it on file while we work with our
programmers on a final decision (within the next few weeks). The number
of information requests (and especially confirmed orders) will be an
important factor for our release decision. While there was a large amount
of potential 'interest' in the last OS/2 version we released, the
resulting number of actual orders was very disappointing..."
So, if enough expressions of interest are received, it appears likely that
the OS/2 version will alse be released in English.
