Installation and Setup

SNAP Graphics/se installs on Convenience Package for OS/2 Warp 4 and
Convenience Package for OS/2 Warp Server for e-business.

To install SNAP Graphics/se:

1. Unzip all the files into a temporary directory, something other than
x:\snap, such as x:\snapinst, where x:\ is your boot drive.

Use the following command and required parameters to unzip the files:

snapse218 -dir -over

2. Run setup sdd from the directory where you installed the files from
above.

3. Reboot your system.
(The system will boot up in the 640x480x256 display mode.)

4. Once the system is running, go to the second page of the 'Screen'
properties tab and verify that your monitor is selected. If "Standard
monitor types" and "Unknown monitor" is selected or the wrong monitor is
selected, then select your monitor Manufacturer and Model from the lists.

5. Go the 'System Properties' dialog box to select all the available
resolutions and color depths.

6. (Optional) Reboot your system.
(You need to shutdown for the changes to take effect. Reboot you system
now or when it is more convenient.)

When you have completed the installation, all the SNAP Graphics/se command
line utilities will be located in the x:\snap directory, where x:\ is the
drive where you have OS/2 located (i.e. your boot drive).

List of Supported Chips

This is a list of the graphics chipsets most recently supported by SNAP
Graphics/se. For a complete list of all chip sets supported, refer to the
readme.txt file in the package. This list refers to the actual chips being
used, not a board level implementation. Thus you will not see any products
from Hercules or STB on the list, but their products are supported because
they use S3, Cirrus, Tseng, etc. chips. Also, any card with less than
512KB of memory cannot be supported by SNAP Graphics/se.

Recent additions include:

* GM21:
o ATI Radeon X300

* GM20:
o ATI Mobility Radeon X600
o ATI Mobility Radeon X300
o NVIDIA GeForce4 MX4000

* GM19:
o Intel i915G/GV

* GM18:
o Enhanced Acceleration and Zooming Support for Matrox MGA-P650

* GM17:
o ATI Radeon 9100
o ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
o Matrox MGA-P650
o NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 8x
o S3 ProSavage DDR (VIA KM266)

* GM16:
o ATI Radeon 9200
o NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

* GM15:
o ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
o NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 8X

Supported resolutions and color depths are adapter dependent and will vary
depending on the amount of graphics memory, the chip set driver
implementation, and the monitor selected/detected.

Service and Support

If you have purchased an active contract for Passport Advantage with
Software Maintenance, the terms and conditions of that contract will
determine the services to which you are entitled.

OS/2 Service Releases are available only by contacting IBM OS/2 Technical
Support. For U.S. customers entitled to technical support, the driver can
be obtained by calling 1-800-IBM-SERV (1-800-426-7378) to open problem
record (PMR). Inform the Service Coordinator that you want to receive the
latest SciTech SNAP Graphics/se for OS/2.

For non-U.S. customers, contact the IBM Support Center in your country the
latest OS/2 Service Release.

In addition, you can report suspected Program defects via fax, mail or
electronically (where available). A defect is defined as a code error that
causes one of the following: (1) data corruption, (2) regression of
supported function, major application or device driver compatibility
error, (3) frequent trap or system hang, (4) serious visual problem or (5)
a significant portion of hardware or software environment is non-
functional. IBM will review your defect report and if IBM, in its sole
discretion, determines that corrective code is required, IBM may issue
corrective code in the form of a Fixpak or Program refresh. IBM does not
guarantee that all defects can or will be corrected. Defect support is
planned to be available for the Program until the service expiration date
of the IBM OS/2 operating system product on which the Program is designed
to run.

IBM reserves the right to modify or withdraw the above referenced support
at any time.

Please refer to the OS/2 Defect Support information in the OS/2 Strategy

Limited Testing of eComStation 1.2 Media Refresh Begins

July 09, 2005 by admin

Serenity Systems International has begun limited beta testing of the media
refresh for eComStation 1.2. Testing will be broadened prior to the
general availability of this media refresh.

Once testing is completed, the updated media will be used to fill orders.
Existing 1.2 users will be eligible to download the images at no cost, or
to order a media pack for a cost of materials, handling, and shipping.

The media refresh is not a new version of eComStation. Rather, it
incorporates fixes, updates, and enhancements which have become available
since the original media was mastered for eComStation 1.2 last year. More
information regarding the Media Refresh, see

Net: ERACC: A major "oops".

08 Jul 2005 12:05:34

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: ERACC

Dear OS/2 and eCS Users,

Much to my chagrin I have just discovered that an e-mail filter I put in
place in early April has been happily deleting mail coming from our web
forms. This means ALL messages coming from our OS/2 and eCS order form,
etcetera have been missed by me for about three months now. If any of you
have attempted to order from ERACC in this time I apologize for missing
your messages. Perhaps you will now understand why I did not respond.

In any case, ERACC is still in business and still a reseller for
eComStation (we can't get OS/2 from IBM at this point). I have resolved
the problem with the mail filter and ask that if any of you tried to place
an order and are still in the market for eComStation please contact ERACC
via our web form off our OS/2 and eCS page here:

http://www.eracc.com/store/os/ibm.htm

Note that the pricing on that page may not be current and I am in the
process of correcting that. Just use the web form to request a current
quote.

Again, I apologize if any of you attempted to request a quote or place an
order off our web forms and your message was lost due to my mistake.

Sincerely,
Gene Alexander

SW: Another Sane/2 Update - 20050708

08 Jul 2005 09:45:30

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,
I've just rebuilt Sane/2 again to include latest usbcalls code.

If the previous build is working for you, there is no major reason to
upgrade.

If the debug logs show hangs in usbbulkread - then this update is
important.

Update requires new usbcalls.dll - http://smedley.info/usbcalls.zip

Once again, I'm providing two zips - the complete release:
http://smedley.info/sane-cvs-latest-os2-usbcalls.zip
&
just the updated backend code (unzip over existing release) -
http://smedley.info/sane-backends-latest-cvs-usbcalls.zip

Note that I've removed the date from the filenames so that the link always
points to the latest version.

So far, I have received reports of the following scanners working:
Epson Stylus Scan 2000 (Epson backend)
Epson Perfection 1670 (Snapscan backend)
Mustek ScanExpress 1200 UB Plus (gt68xx backend)
Umax 1220U (umax 1220u backend)

Once again, please refer to test.cmd and readme.os2 for further
information on using this release.

Cheers,

Paul.

SW: FotoGet/2 Version 1.0.9

08 Jul 2005 09:22:18

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Herwig Bauernfeind

Here is the general availability release of FotoGet/2 Version 1.0.9, a
freeware utility to ease the transfer of your pictures from your digital
camera to your eComStation (or OS/2) PC. The camera must be accessible
from eCS (OS/2) by a driveletter. As you might know already, this is not a
device driver.

The main reason for this release is that the previous release errornously
used DrCtl016.DLL while it was distributed with DrCtl017.DLL.

So, what is new in this release?
+ FotoGet/2's main window is now completely resizable.

What was fixed in this release?
! Use DrCtl017.DLL again instead of DrCtl016.DLL
! FotoGet/2's position was always written to FOTOGET.INI, but never
restored.
! If FotoGet.INI was a 0 byte file the program hung upon startup.

Support is provided on YahooGroups.
Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fotoget/ to check out!

Get FotoGet/2 from hobbes:

Hobbes Incoming: <http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/fotoget109.wpi>
Hobbes Search: <http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=fotoget>

A big thanks to everybody, who reported bugs, helped me, or came up with
suggestions!

Have fun,

SW: Updated Sane/os2 build

07 Jul 2005 08:17:11

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,
Updated build of Sane for OS/2 now available.

For new installs: http://smedley.info/sane-cvs-20050707-os2-usbcalls.zip
(approx 3mb)

For existing installs:
http://smedley.info/sane-backends-20050707-cvs-usbcalls.zip

This releases fixes a bug in sanei_usb_get_vendor_product
that caused the following error in the debug logs:
[sanei_usb] sanei_usb_get_vendor_product: access method 2 not implemented

It also implements sanei_usb_control_msg()

Note that I haven't yet implemented all of the API calls in sanei_usb.c

Based on feedback from users, these will be implemented. Therefore it is
very important to send me the debug logs using the methodology in the
readme file.

Cheers,

Paul.

SW: Initial release of Sane for OS/2 with usbcalls support

06 Jul 2005 10:47:18

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,
This is the first public release of Sane built to support USB scanners
using the Netlabs usbcalls library.

This is based on CVS code pulled today (6th July, 2005) and should be
pretty close to what will be in Sane 1.0.16

Information on the scanners that should work with this release is at:
http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs-cvs.html

Download: http://smedley.info/sane-cvs-20050706-os2-usbcalls.zip

So far, it has been tested only with an Epson Perfection 1670 USB scanner.

YOUR FEEDBACK IS NEEDED!

NOTE: sane-find-scanner will not detect USB scanners in this release - I
need to majorly rehash the earlier code.

This release requires:
* usbresmg.sys to be loaded in config.sys (ships with eCS - updated
version available at http://smedley.info/usbresmg.zip
* usbcalls.dll in the libpath - available from
http://smedley.info/usbcalls.zip
* libc06b5.dll - available from http://smedley.info/libc06b5.zip

It requires \sane\lib to be in the libpath, and the following environment
variable set so that Sane can find it's configuration files: set
sane_config_dir=\sane\etc\sane.d

At this stage, the release has only been tested with the sane directory
off of the root.

First test to try is scanner detection using:
scanimage -L

My scanner returns: device `snapscan:usbcalls:3' is a EPSON EPSON Scanner
flatbed scanner

To execute a scan, simply try scanimage >scan.pnm

Note that some scanners will require modifications to the .conf files that
are found in \sane\etc\sane.d

If this doesn't work with your USB scanner, please set me debug
information on using the following 'set' statements:
set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255 - turns on debug information for the USB
interface
set SANE_DEBUG_xxxxxxx=255 - where xxxxxxx = the name of your scanners
backend - eg snapscan

then run: scanimage -v 1>image.pnm 2>debugoutput.txt
Debug information will be sent to debugoutput.txt

Please also send me details on the versions of the USB stack being run,
the USB chipset in use and the system level, as well of course as the
name of the scanner.

I'd like to start working on a website listing scanners that DO work.

If you'd like to support this project, please consider any of the
following:
* donate to Netlabs - http://shop.mensys.nl/catalogue/mns_netlabs.html
* encourage me to keep working on this and other projects by using
Paypal to donate to paulDESPAM@DESPAMsmedley.info (Of course remove the
DESPAMadded by the moderator)
* write and TELL ME if this works or not :)

Cheers,

Paul Smedley.

The Samba CIFS/SMB Client & Server package got updated, changes in the
laatest versions:

Client beta9:
- added EA support for DosOpen which was forgotten in beta8

Server alpha5:
- moved to libc06b5.dll libc

You can get the new release at:

http://samba.netlabs.org/

Bugs should be reported to the XTracker at:
http://xtracker.netlabs.org/index.php?project=22

Note: We would like to get some feedback on those releases, it looks like
they work very stable so far but the user feedback is rather low, which
is not really motivating...

If you have some feedback, both positive or negative, please report it to
the netlabs community list:

http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.community

thanks!

SW: Mr. Message (AIM client) 7/3/2005 update

03 Jul 2005 21:24:38

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Marty

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR
protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and a
variety of other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:

* Full support for 16-bit legacy TCP/IP stack as well as the
32-bit stack.
* Fixed intermittent crashes on startup for users with a long buddy
list that is split into two parts by the AOL server.
* Fixed a potential crash when an error message is received during
the early stages of login.
* Fixed a bug causing the Session Manager menu to go away when it is
navigated by keyboard.
* Fixed a bug where settings information was not updated when a
session's name (login user name) is changed using ALT-Left click
instead of editing the session.
* Fixed a few minor memory leaks for weird situations.

SW: Firewire Driver 4 OS/2 News

03 Jul 2005 14:59:23

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Sander Nyman"<2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

The following update was submitted by Robert Henschel on the Netlabs
Firewire project homepage:

Project Update

"The project is not dead! Since the "revolution" in the Ukraine is now
over, Alexandr can also do some more work on the Firewire driver. The
Firewire specific part of the sbp2 protocol is now implement, what is left
is the OS/2 specific part. After this is done, a new Beta version will be
released."

For those unfamiliar with the project:

Introduction
The goal of this project is to write an open source OS/2 IEEE 1394, or
short Firewire, controller driver and mass storage layer. The initial
version of the driver will support PCI attached Firewire controllers build
around the VIA Technologies Inc. VT6306 chipset. A hard drive connected
via a Firewire case will be supported by the sbp2 protocol.

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Eugene Gorbunoff"

Updated ACPI driver for eComStation is available for "inhabitants" of the
eComStation beta-zone. Read the scenario of testing in ACPI.doc (testing
the event of Power button).

"The ability to support ACPI is becoming more and more important in order
to take advantage of new power management capabilities, or even to
support the operating system on newer hardware. Therefore, support for
this technology will be an important feature to many users in the new
version of eComStation." PDF:
