Warpstock Conference Will Still Be Held

The attack on the World Trade Center has, understandably, caused many people to re-evaluate their travel plans. The Warpstock Board of Directors and the Event Team would like to reassure everyone that Warpstock 2001 has not been cancelled.

Warpstock is proud of the OS/2 Community and that less than a handful of people have told us that they have changed their plans to travel to Toronto. The Warpstock planners encourage all OS/2 users to follow through on their travel plans this October. Thanks to new security procedures, airline travel has never been safer.

The 5th annual Warpstock conference will be held October 6-8, 2001, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is produced by Warpstock, Inc., a North Carolina non-profit corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock 2001 website, http://www.warpstock.org or its mirror site: http://warpstock.os2voice.org.

DFSee version 4.03 released

DFSee is an FDISK-like display, analysis and recovery tool with powerfull FIX commands and UNDELETE for HPFS and NTFS. It is a command-line and text-only utility (no GUI). This allow usage from simple boot-diskettes for recovery. The package includes an OS/2, Win-NT and DOS version.

DFSee can be downloaded from my web-site, but after evaluation, and for all real use you are required to get a registration. It can be purchased from the Mensys online shop for about US $18. Details can be found at: http://www.fsys.demon.nl/dfsee.htm

Version 4.03 updates and fixes:
- Fix for 'empty' commands that caused a trap in DFSINFO.CMD
- New windowed help system as a start for the new user-interface
- Windowed messages boxes can be used for all confirmations now

Registering DFSee will give you the right to use all 4.xx versions and get support plus a reasonable amount of assistance by email.

But even more important, it enables further development of DFSee!

PQMagic 7.0 and no hpfs?

I just received an upgrade for my Partition Magic to 7.0. On Page 21 of the User's Guide it lists the following supported file systems:

Extended
Extended X
FAT
FAT16x
FAT32
FAT32x
Linux Ext2
Linux Swap
NTFS
Unformatted
Unallocated Space

There is nothing in the manual covering HPFS. OS/2 is briefly mentioned under FAT16, but the program must be run from the Rescue Disks created under some version of Windows.

Looks like this is one upgrade I will not be installing.

0.9.4 VACPP Updated & Daily Builds Available

Apparently SSL and a couple other things were inadvertently left out of the new Mozilla 0.9.4 build posted last night, so a newer drop has been posted at:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla0.9.4/mozilla-i386-pcos2-vacpp-0.9.4.zip

Mike Kaply also announced that the daily update process for the OS/2 VAC++ build has been automated, so two new builds of 0.9.4 will be posted every day with the latest one available at:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/mozilla-os2.zip

New builds are created at 8am and 4pm. Earlier builds are also archived on the server.

Be aware that these are built differently than the regularly releases. These builds don't create their own \bin directory, so you need to create one first and then unzip it (with directories) from that directory.

RexxMail updated to build 20010916.130334.

Build 20010916.130334 of RexxMail is now available from: http://www.degeus.com/rexx/

This edition of RexxMail introduces the SafeHTML option to filter HTML content, preventing automatic access to external resources. Users can now safely view HTML content without fear of initializing unwanted connections to outside servers. With SafeHTML, image tag tracers are removed, and legitimate text and image tags pointing to external resources are rewritten to appear as clickable links.

In addition, RexxMail now rewrites links to MIME image content to point to the relevant graphics files in the attachments folder so images appear in line.

And of course, Microsoft Smart Tags are always blocked.

From the RexxMail readme.txt file:

RexxMail provides an extremely flexible yet easy to use e-mail processing environment with a minimum of fuss. It operates through elements provided by the standard OS/2 Workplace Shell (which is still the best graphical user interface available on any platform). Since the RexxMail user interface consists of normal WPS folders and program and file objects, getting to know the program requires only a minimum of effort.

Although the standard way of working with RexxMail is through the WPS by manipulating WPS objects, RexxMail is a straightforward Classic REXX program that runs, like any REXX program, from a command line in a (hidden) windowed or full-screen OS/2 command processor session. Since all RexxMail operations are controlled by command-line switches, the full range of RexxMail functions and settings can also be accessed from a command line.

RexxMail is written in REXX, an interpreted language, so it is also its own source code, ready for you to edit to suit your preferences.

2001-09-16 = Update: build 20010916.130334.
- HTML content of incoming attachment folders is filtered:
* <META NAME="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" CONTENT="TRUE"> tag is added to header to block Microsoft smart tags.
* <?XML:NAMESPACE ...> tags are removed.
* <.IMG ...> tags pointing to embedded images are rewritten to point to extracted image files in attachments folder.
- Added 'SafeHTML' option:
* <.IMG ...> tags that point to internal or external images less than 10 pixels wide or high are removed.
* <META ...> and <.IMG ...> tags pointing to external URLs are rewritten as clickable links.
* <META ...> tags except < ... CHARSET=...> are removed from HTML header.
* <BODY ...> tags with external background URLs are rewritten.
* <FRAMESET>, <NOFRAMES>, and </IFRAME> tags are removed, and <FRAME ...> and <IFRAME ...> tags are rewritten as clickable links.
- Added PRM2RxMl.CMD filter to convert Post Road Mailer ASCII (TAB-delimited) address book files to RexxMail address text file format.
- Added 'Converting to RexxMail from other mail clients' section to 'readme.txt' (this file).
- Added explanatory 'contents.txt' file to RexxMail program directory.
- Changed command-line help mechanism: RexxMail now uses a single help text resource file, 'showhelp.txt', and results are sent to standard output rather than piped to the 'more' command.
- (Install.CMD): A few minor changes in connection with the new command-line help mechanism.
- Added 'BeforeDispatch' option to specify a command to run before collecting and sending mail.
- Added 'AfterDispatch' option to specify a command to run after collecting and sending mail.

RexxMail is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, see http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

Marcus de Geus
