Warpstock 2000 is only five weeks away, but there is still time to make your flight reservations. You could save some money in the process, too.

The Warpstock Committee is has made arrangements with US Airways to offer discounts on flights to Philadelphia for Warpstock 2000.

Restricted Fare tickets can be purchased with a 5% discount, and Full Fare / Unrestricted tickets are available with a 10% discount if purchased at least seven days advance of the flight. Restricted tickets are those that incur a penalty for a refund or itinerary change.

To take advantage of this offer, call US Airways at 877-874-7687 and mention Gold File Number 43651496. The offer is valid only for flights from September 5th to September 14th.

Note: For the discount to be honored, at least 10 Warpstock attendees must use it. However, we don't think that will be a problem :-)

REMEMBER: Early registration, and the $20 discount that goes with it, ends on August 31. Use Mensys's secure online ordering system or mail in your registration form. More details can be found at:

http://www.warpstock.org/2000/registration/registration.html

Where do you get it?

You can download SciTech Display Doctor 7.0.3 for OS/2 BETA 32 from our ftp site using the following URL:

ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/sdd/beta/os2/sdd-os2-7.0.3-b32.exe

Note that we have now changed the version numbering to keep track of the equivalent release versions of the IBM SDD/se editions of the product. As new public released are made available by IBM, we will update our version numbering to suit.

What's new:

. All remaining changes are now tracked on the web. Public changes are tracked at the following URL:

http://www.scitechsoft.com/sdd2_changes.txt

What is SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2?

SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 brings SciTech's proven DOS and Windows device support technologies to the OS/2 Operating System. Although one of the core features of our DOS and Windows products is the support for the VESA VBE/Core standard, the OS/2 version has nothing at all to do with VESA services. Rather SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 incorporates the new SciTech Nucleus, Graphics Architecture device driver technology to bring SciTech's device support to the OS/2 platform.

SciTech Nucleus is a binary portable, OS neutral, device driver architecture. As binary portable drivers, SciTech can fully develop and test the core device drivers in the DOS and Windows environments, while being able to target any Intel x86 based OS as the runtime environment (such as OS/2). This essentially allows the OS/2 product to utilise the same SciTech binary device drivers as the DOS and Windows versions of the product, improving the quality and performance of the drivers for all supported operating systems.

Runtime Requirements

SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 requires a version of OS/2 Warp 3 or OS/2 Warp 4 in order to run. More imporantly, it requires at least Warp 3 with fixpack 35, or Warp 4 with fixpack 5 installed. If you have a version with earlier fixpacks installed, SciTech Display Doctor will refuse to install.

List of all certified chipsets:

This is a complete list of the various graphics chipsets that have been certified to work correctly with this version of SciTech Display Doctor. Please note that this list refers to the actual chips being used, not a board-level implementation. Thus you will not see any products from Hercules or STB on the list, but their products are supported because they use S3, Cirrus, Tseng, etc. chips. Also, any card with less than 512KB of memory cannot be supported by SciTech Display Doctor.

Note: Please check the separate list of supported laptop chipsets for more information if you are using this product on a laptop. All laptop chipsets are still listed here as many laptop chipset can also be used in regular PCI/AGP boards.

Attention all OS/2 users! The biggest OS/2 event of the year is approaching fast, and if you don't act soon, you might miss it!

Warpstock 2000 will be the premier OS/2 conference to attend this year.

If you've never been to Warpstock before, this is definitely the year to go, because it will be the biggest and best Warpstock ever.

OS/2 experts from around the world will be there to impart their wisdom and experiences during the many presentations. Several vendors will also be there to demonstrate and sell their OS/2-compatible and native OS/2 products. But the best part of Warpstock is that you'll be able to spend an entire weekend with hundreds of other people who share your vision of today's best computing environment.

So how much time do you have? Not much! Warpstock 2000 will be in Philadelphia on September 9 and 10. That means you have only 5 weeks left. Special discounts on flights and the hotel are still available. See the web site for details.

The 4th annual Warpstock conference will be held September 9-10, 2000, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is produced by Warpstock, Inc., a North Carolina non-profit corporation. Have you been trying to get a hotel reservation for Warpstock 2000? Perhaps you were hoping to spend a few days before or after the convention in Philadelphia. Maybe you've run into some problems?

The Warpstock 2000 Committee has made arrangements with the Holiday Inn Independence Mall to offer a discounted rate for Warpstock attendees who mention the code "WARPSTOCK". The discounted rates are supposed to be valid for 3 days prior and after the event. Unfortunately, there have been reports that some people were unable to reserve rooms for days other than the weekend.

The matter has been investigated, and the problem is resolved! The key is to call 1-800-THEBELL (1-800-843-2355). Using another number may not work. The rate is $124/night for single occupancy and $129/night for double.

The Warpstock Committee strongly recommends that attendees stay at the Holiday Inn Independence Mall, the same hotel in which the convention will be held. Warpstock is not just about presentations and vendor areas. It's about networking with other OS/2 users to get the most out of OS/2, and that can happen any hour of the day. It would be a shame if you found yourself engrossed in an enlightening conversation with a number of OS/2 experts, only to have to leave early to make it back to your hotel on the other side of town.

And remember, the early registration deadline has been extended to the end of August, so you can stil save $20! See the Warpstock 2000 web site for details on that.

The 4th annual Warpstock conference will be held September 9-10, 2000, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is produced by Warpstock, Inc., a North Carolina non-profit corporation. DeleGate is a multi-purpose application level gateway, or a proxy server which runs on multiple platforms (Unix, Windows and OS/2).

DeleGate mediates communication of various protocols (HTTP, FTP, NNTP, POP, Telnet, etc.), applying cache and conversion for mediated data, controlling access from clients and routing toward servers. It translates protocols between clients and servers, merging several servers into a single server view with aliasing and filtering. Born as a tiny proxy for Gopher in March 1994, it has steadily grown into a general purpose proxy server. Besides proxy, DeleGate can be used as a simple origin server for some protocols (HTTP, FTP and NNTP).

IBM already paid a steep price for staying above the fray. During the early 1990s, the company went through the motions of fighting a rear guard battle against Microsoft during the operating system wars between Windows and OS/2. But beyond helping foster a people's jihad (remember Team OS/2?), Big Blue was a big flop when it came to mixing it up. Had it chosen to get tough, management could have had a real field day recounting what they described as Microsoft's checkered history of double crosses.

From the news.scitechsoft.com:

Scitech's up and coming GUI controls for Scitech Display Doctor are currently dependent on another toolkit being ported to OS/2. This toolkit has been ported to other platforms already, but Scitech will have to take on the task of porting it to OS/2 themselves. This will result in LONG delays waiting for the GUI controls which are badly needed in SDD for OS/2.

You can help!!

Here's what Kendall Bennett said on the topic:

"We are using a cross platform GUI toolkit (wxWindows) to build the control panel utilities, and the Windows and Linux versions of this stuff will be ready long before the OS/2 ones. The reason is that the OS/2 version of wxWindows is still not ready yet.

If anyone wants to help make this happen quicker, sign up to help out with the OS/2 port of wxWindows ;-)

We will of course be helping with the wxWindows OS/2 port ourselves, once our control panel is completed for Windows."

If you wish to help them out and help expedite the arrival of these GUI controls in SDD, pop over to http://www.wxwindows.org/ and ask them if you can lend a hand porting their library to OS/2.

One of OS/2's greatest strengths is its ability to be extended in unique and fascinating ways by third-party vendors. After thirteen years, other operating systems still pale in comparison, being unable to provide the same functionality even today. This year, Warpstock 2000 is honored to be the launching point for a key upgrade to one of the most incredible OS/2 applications every created: ZipStream Secure 2.0.

ZipStream Secure (ZSS), by Carbon Based Software, provides on-the-fly disk compression and encryption. Like every well-written piece of OS/2 software, ZSS integrates itself into OS/2, allowing you to use compressed and encrypted files like any other files.

In this day, security and privacy are key issues, and ZSS will secure your data better than any other product, on any platform. But that's not all. OS/2 users are keen on protecting their investment, which is why they choose an operating system that lets them get more out of their hardware. The compression features of ZSS extend that philosophy, reducing the need for hard drive upgrades.

Join Bruce Leiwant of ZGC, Inc. http://www.zgc.com/html/carbon_based_software.html for his presentation of ZipStream Secure and the new features in version 2.0:

- Full WPS integration and full graphical utilities

- Zlib compression engine now included

- File format changes for compatibility with ZipStream suite for Windows

- Installable compression subsystem that allows third parties to extend ZipStream.

You know you want this software - be the first on your block to own a copy by coming to Warpstock 2000.

Further detailed information on the ZipStream family of products can be found at Carbon Based Software's web site:

I'm pleased to announce that I have compiled an alpha version of gPhoto2 for OS/2. There is only a command line interface available, but that works fine to start with. Currently I'm looking for testers!

If your camera is mentioned in the following list:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gphoto/camlist

please download:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gphoto/gphoto2.zip

unpack the file, and start it with 'gphoto2'

At first start it complains about CAMLIBS environment variable. This should point to the subdirectory created while unpacking the archive.

Please let me know if it works or not!

(The Sony DSC-F1 is working properly so at least some things are okay...)
