Hi all,
This might be useful to some users here:

--------
"Tutorial: Future-Proof Your Firefox Extensions"
<http://www.smallbizpipeline.com/handson/171201722>

"Getting your favorite extensions to work with the latest Firefox browser
beta releases may be a lot easer than you think." --------

Note: There are two pages here.

I use the Mozilla V1.4X not Firefox, but some people might be able to
learn something here. Of course the usual cautions apply: YMMV, etc.

SW: ScummVM ported to OS/2

2005-10-10

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Scumm VM v0.71 for OS/2 release 1 available from
http://smedley.info/scummvm-0.7.1-os2r1.zip

Note that my site will be unavailable from around midday Sunday Central
Australian time (GMT+9.5) until around 5pm Monday as I'll be away and
will be shutting the server down.

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical
point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data
files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables
shipped with the game, allowing you to play them on systems for which
they were never designed!

Built with Innotek GCC v3.3.5r1 and hence requires libc06r1.dll to be
available.

Built to work with the following engines:
Engines:
SCUMM
Simon the Sorcerer
Beneath a Steel Sky
Broken Sword I (w/ mpeg2 cutscenes)
Broken Sword II (w/ mpeg2 cutscenes)
Flight of the Amazon Queen
Legend of Kyrandia

Tested with the free games available from
http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php (Beneath a Steel Sky & Flight of the
Amazon Queen) as well as Day of the Tentacle & Secret of Monkey Island.

Note that the OS/2 version of SDL requires Snap Graphics to be installed.

If you want to encourage my efforts, please consider making a donation
via the link at http://smedley.info/os2ports.html or sponsor Netlabs or
any of the other organisations that are still supporting OS/2 &
eComStation.

Cheers,

Paul

Net: Warpstock 2005 Pictures - reminder

2005-10-10

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Julian Thomas"

As you heard at Warpstock, I will be collecting and generating web page(s)
of the WS2005 pictures taken by any of the attendees. A few requests:

1. Original JPEG images, please. I will resize and tweak as needed, but
to maximize quality, I don't want images that have already been resized.
If you have images in raw format, please convert them to jpg. Lossless
JPG rotation (with PMVIEW PRO or whatever) is OK.

2. If you have several pictures of essentially the same subject, please
select the best and don't send the others.

3. Email them to me with a subject line of WS2005PIX. Any cropping
instructions, optional captioning info (reference picture filename,
please) or other requests please specify - I'll try.

4. I have a fast connection and adequate disk space. However, your ISP
may balk at sending humongous attachments; feel free to send as many
messages as needed but preferably not one per image file. If you need
arrangements to ftp the pictures, contact me and I'll work something out
(or if you want me to get them by ftp, let me know the specifics).

5. I'm going to be working on this during the week as time permits, but
there's work for paying clients and a dentist visit in the cards also.
I'd like to receive all the images by the end of Sunday Oct. 16. I
realize that some of you may have film cameras and will be getting
photocd's with your pix and won't make that date; that's fine, if you let
me know before Sunday along with an estimate of the number of pix.

Don't worry about filenames (I'm sure I'll get some duplicate DSCNxxx
filenames from different cameras) but I'll manage that issue.

From: asuriDESPAM@DESPAMtele2.se

I have been in contact with the OORexx development team, and it looks
unlikely that an OS/2 port will be produced, IBM did not pass on the OS/2
source.

We have two choices here one simply to accept this, another is to try and
port it out selves :)

since the OORexx code base has been substantially updated since its
release, it also seem, that even if we got IBM to open the OS/2 code that
it could easily be fitted into the new code.

I am looking into the possibility of making an OS/2 port from the OOrexx
code if you would like to help, please email me directly at

SW: Adblock - Firefox Extension

2005-10-10

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Sander Nyman"<2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

Adblock is an enormously popular (currently ranked #5) Firefox extension
(available on the Mozilla Update site), which claims to be compatible with
Firefox 0.7 - 1.6a1. Although other platforms are having their own
problems, with Adblock apparently blocking all Flash 8 content, the latest
Adblock version (0.5.2.039 on Mozilla Update) when combined with Firefox
1.5bx for OS/2 & eCS, blocks *ALL* Flash content, as well as disabling the
Java plugin.

A fixed version of Adblock is available here:

SW: WhatsOn beta 4

2005-10-10

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: kimDESPAM@DESPAMfoder.dk

I have released beta version 4 of WhatsOn today.

This version has been delayed somewhat (sorry for the expiration mesage)
by some reports of unsolvable games, unfortunatly without success.

This version contains some new feature, and a debug-feature to help me
find the error with the unsolvable games.

See read.me for more information.

For those who don't know :

The game is one of logic deduction, and are (at least in the original
version) very addictive ! It is highly inspired by the old DOS game
Sherlock.

You can find the game via my homepage at http://hjem.tele2adsl.dk/kimfoder
under programs.

Or you can go directly to the new homepage of the game, sponsered by
os2world.com, at http://www.os2world.com/whatson

If you try the game, please let me know what you think.

If you find any errors or has any suggestions please let me know too.

There has been some interest in the special shirts worn at Warpstock 2005
by members of the organizing commitee and Board who were actively
involved in the preparation of the event. I can special order more shirts
for three week delivery from the supplier if attendees wish to purchase
one. They would cost $45.00 US and be GST exempt if shipped outside of
Canada. I will ship them by Canada Post Surface Parcel rate, meaning 10
days to the USA and probably about 21 to Europe (I'm guessing). If you
are interested, send me the size you wish, your mailing address, credit
card name, number and expiry date. If you are uncomforable placing this
information in an email, you may use snail-mail to the address below, or
call 519-258-5404. or fax 519-258-4880. I will close this offer at
3:00 pm Windsor Ontario time, on October 21.

On 10-5-05 Symantec discontinued support for NAV OS/2. The Linux virus
signatures however are identical, except for 4 additional files. You can
delete these (3 *.so files, and navuplin.dis), though they do no harm.
The 2 OS/2 .DLL files (NAVEXO2A.DLL & NAVENGO2.DLL) are copied to the new
VIRUSDEF folder automatically by Live Update.

NAV Live Update can also be fixed by editing NAVLUOS2.INI as follows:

SW: Mozilla Firefox 1.5b2 (official) Has Been Released

2005-10-11

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Sander Nyman"<2sanderdaDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

Mozilla Firefox 1.5b2 (official) has been released. This will be the last
beta release of the next major Firefox version. This release includes
improvements to the new automated update system, web site rendering and
performance. It also includes many bug fixes, and several security fixes.

Improvements over Firefox 1.0.x versions include an automated update
system to streamline product upgrades, faster Back and Forward navigation,
a feature for clearing private browsing data, drag-and-drop reordering of
browser tabs, a redesigned Options/Preferences window and better popup
blocking. Web standards support is also improved, with support for
Scalable Vector Graphics, JavaScript 1.6 and more CSS. Accessibility is
also better (including new DHTML accessibility features), security has
also been enhanced. Firefox's Extension System has been redesigned to make
extension upgrades cleaner (nothing left behind from previous versions).
This DOES break some current extensions, so if you use extensions, CHECK
FOR UPDATES to them first. Extension authors are aware of this, and many
extensions have already been updated. By the time of the final 1.5
release, all extensions should be updated.

You can download it here:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5b2/contrib/firefox-1.5b2-os2.zip

NOTE: This release requires the C runtime DLLs from Innotek. The latest
version is 0.5.1, which includes an installer. Available here:

http://download.innotek.de/gccos2/runtime/libc-0.5.1.exe

NOTE: This release requires IPLUGINW.DLL to use the Java and Flash
plugins. The latest version is available here:

http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi (latest, backward
compatible)

SW: ScummVM build updated 10/12/2005

2005-10-12

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,
I've refreshed the build of ScummVM with a copy built from the latest CVS
source. It is available from http://smedley.info/os2ports.html or
http://www.os2world.com/smedley/ (Thanks to Kim Haverblad for providing
webspace at os2world.com!)

Changes required to build on OS/2 are now included in CVS and ScummVM 0.80
will have an OS/2 build hosted at http://scummvm.org!

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical
point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data
files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables
shipped with the game, allowing you to play them on systems for which
they were never designed!

ScummVM lets you run these adventures: Adventure Soft's Simon the
Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and
Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; and games based on LucasArts'
SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system. SCUMM is used
for many games, including Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max
and more. Compatibility with supported games is continually improving, so
check back often.

Cheers,

Paul.

Event: Next SCOUG Meeting Sat, Oct 15, 2005

2005-10-13

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Tom Brown

The next meeting of SCOUG will be this coming Saturday, October 15, 2005,
9:30AM to 1 PM. For further information and directions, see:
http://www.scoug.com/meetings.html

This month, Sandy Shapiro is going to show us his WL330g setup. The
WL330g is a portable device that allows any system with a wired Ethernet
NIC to connect to a wireless network. The device has several other
interesting features and Sandy is going to put the device though its
paces.

Up next, Greg Smith will help us continue our journey on the path to
porting GCC apps to OS/2 without pain. Last month VIM ran. This month,
come see what's next.

And, last but not least, barring technical difficulties, Steven Levine is
going to have another mystery CD to show us. We think you will find it
interesting.

Hope to see you there!

Event: Warpstock 2005 now completed -- corrections/additions

2005-10-13

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Andy Willis

There were some questions that have arisen from the original email that
went out as well as some corrections.

First Derek Keoughan sent this:
"Just in the interest of clarity, it was an Athlon64 3000+ PC, and it must
be mentioned that it was paid for by a Warpstock attendee who wishes to
remain anonymous! The way it's written, it makes it sound like I was
being overly generous, and that's not fair to the donor." Thank you to
Derek for the correction and an apology to the donor. Second, the
observant will notice his last name should be correct here which was not
the case in the previous message (apologies as I should have caught
that).

Finally, it was asked how many attendees there were this year compared to
previous years. There were 70 attendees this year. That is up from
previous year which had ~50 and ~100 the year prior.

SW: WarpIN 1.0.8

2005-10-13

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: madodelDESPAM@DESPAMptdprolog.net

WarpIN 1.0.8 has been released.

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/warpin/warpin-1-0-8.exe

Fixes:

-- The "Installation log" preference and environment variable were being
ignored. Bug 657

-- Deinstalling a package gave an error when attempting to remove the
package's target directory. Bug 667

-- Removed envwic.cmd and added runwic.cmd to allow running wic.exe
without needing to set BEGINLIBPATH first.

http://warpin.netlabs.org/

"WarpIN is intended to become the new general-purpose installer for OS/2
to overcome the current lack of a both flexible and user-friendly
installer. This thing is available to any programmer, commercial,
shareware, freeware or GPL, for free use, even though WarpIN itself is

SW: 7-Zip

2005-10-15

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eComStation News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: mikaelelf@os2ug.se

7-zip i some new file compression program, that uses LZMA-compression. It
is free software under GNU LPGL. There is no OS/2 version but I downloaded
the Windows version and successfully installed [moderator's note: Using
Odin] and unpacked a 7z-file. I even got an icon on the desktop
automaticly. Not bad! This software supports 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
for packing/unpacking and CAB, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM and DEB for
unpacking only. It should give a 2-10% better compression than ordinary
zip or gzip.
