2005-12-16 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Don Hawkinson In the last notice I sent to Voice News , the download links were incorrect due to my error. During December, I am offering a prerelease special on TextHelper and my other shareware programs. Register TextHelper now for $10 and for another $10 you can get the registered versions of my other shareware offered on my web page. http://www.dwhawkinson.com TextHelper is not yet listed on my web page. The download links are: http://home.tulsaconnect.com/dwhawk/th_s090.zip and for OS/2 & eCS users who speak Dutch: http://home.tulsaconnect.com/dwhawk/th_ds090.zip The Dutch version of the online help is not yet available. I am interested in comments and bug reports even if you decide not to register TextHelper. There will be a 1.0 release early in January 2006. TextHelper is simple editor based on the MultiLineEditor class from the IBM Open Class Library. I have added some text manipulation functions and special support for printing on HP Deskjet and Laserjet printers. If you do not have a compatible printer, there is also a generic printer option. TextHelper is not intended to replace any full functioned editor. Its value is mainly the ability to print in Landscape or Portrait mode; on US letter, US legal, and Euro A4 sized paper and envelope sizes; in 5, 10,12, 16, or 20 characters per inch or proportional; in 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 ,12 lines per inch; 6, 12, or 24 character point size; in bold or letter quality mode; with or without line numbers; with or without a 3 hole punch margin; and in combinations of those options. 2005-12-19 I'm trying to cleanup a couple of bad addresses on the VOICE News list. Does anyone recognize any of the following address: "handriessen at t-online.de" "hwj@mail-sttl.uswest.net" and perhaps know what address may be subscribed to the list that is being redirected to either of them? There are no such addresses currently subscribed yet I keep getting failure messages for them. For the record we currently have 724 subscribers. Down about 50 from a year ago. Besides the 2 bad addresses above I am getting a couple which are returned because the account mailbox is full and 1 where there is a timeout. I haven't been deleting these returns since its usually a temporary situation. Finally as a reminder if you have OS/2 or eComStation related news please use the submission form at http://www.os2voice.org/fSubNews.html or send it to submit@os2voice.org Sending it to any other address may result in it being overlooked and at best delayed. 2005-12-19 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Walter F. Metcalf Hello everyone, VOICE is considering sponsoring an updated and supported version of PMMail for OS/2. There is the general feeling that a large number of people still use this long-dead email client because is is fast, and feature-rich, among other reasons. Possibly others would start using it again if it were updated and supported. Before VOICE commits to this project, which could be costly and developer-intensive, at least in the short term, we want to get a slightly better idea of the usage and interest in PMMail for OS/2, so we have created a poll to determine this. When answering the question about the amount you would be willing to pay for such a product, please be realistic, and select the MAXIMUM you could/would be willing to pay. (Think of the prices indicated as registration fees.) The poll is located at http://www.os2voice.org/cgi-bin/vpp1.cmd?pollname=pmmail1 . It would help if you would completely the poll as soon as possible. However, to make allowance for the busyness of the Christmas season, the cutoff date is not until Jan 15, 2006. If you have questions about the content of the poll, you may contact me at walter dot os2 at rogers dot com. (Remove the obvious characters before sending the email. :-) ) Developers interested in this project should note that there MIGHT be funds available to pay them. Nothing has been officially decided yet, however. Thanks, ***************************************** Walter F. 2005-12-19 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley Now available from http://smedley.info/os2ports.html From the readme.os2 file: This is a first public release of Bind 9.3.2rc1 compiled for OS/2. It is built with Innotek GCC 3.3.5 GA and requires the libc06 runtime dll which is available from ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.0-ga2.zip This has not been extensively tested, but seems to work locally for me. Known issues: * named currently expects its configuration file to be in /bind9/etc - a future release will check the OS/2 ETC directory * named currently logs some errors to the log - however these errors do not appear to affect functionality and are under investigation * currently requires a 32-bit tcpip stack (ie tcpip v4.1 or higher). If there is demand for a tcpip v4 compatible version, I'll see if I can build it. My Bind 8 configuration file required only minor changes to work with Bind 9 - I had to remove 'deallocate-on-exit' option, and remove 'category load { xfer-log; };' Please send feedback to paul@smedley.info Cheers, Paul. Details on rndc.key can be found at http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ref-guide/s1-bind-rndc.html - it should be possible to specify the location of rndc.key in named.conf and clear this message. 2005-12-21 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Walter F. Metcalf Hello everyone, I'm trying to limit the amount of information I post, until more discussion has taken place by the VOICE Board of Directors. The final decision will, of course, be up to the members of VOICE. One point, however, has been coming up so often, that it needs to clarified publically. Perhaps the answer to this question should have included in the Poll. The wording may vary, but the question is "Is the PMMail for OS/2 source code available?" Some people have asked, "Does VOICE have the source code?" The answer to both is questions is that VOICE has in hand a definite offer to sell the source code (and the copyright). VOICE wouldn't have made these announcements unless this were so. What VOICE has to do now is to decide what to do with this offer. The Poll was designed to give us information to help us make this decision. I hope this clarifies some of the confusion surrounding this offer. 2005-12-23 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel http://www.cairographics.org/introduction (Caution site loads extremely slowly) "Cairo is a 2D graphics library with support for multiple output devices. Currently supported output targets include the X Window System, win32, and image buffers. Experimental backends include OpenGL (through glitz), Quartz, XCB, PostScript and PDF file output. Cairo is designed to produce consistent output on all output media while taking advantage of display hardware acceleration when available (eg. through the X Render Extension). The cairo API provides operations similar to the drawing operators of PostScript and PDF. Operations in cairo including stroking and filling cubic Bézier splines, transforming and compositing translucent images, and antialiased text rendering. All drawing operations can be transformed by any affine transformation (scale, rotation, shear, etc.) Cairo is implemented as a library written in the C programming language, but bindings are available for several different programming languages. Cairo is free software and is available to be redistributed and/or modified under the terms of either the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2.1 or the Mozilla Public License (MPL) version 1.1. " Updated OS/2 binary (cairo102.dll), OS/2 development (DLL and headers), OS/2 source changes, and patched Cairo source available for Download: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/Cairo Changelog in OS/2 source file: 2005.12.22: - Implemented dirty_area support. 2005-12-23 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: axel.hagedornDESPAM@DESPAMgmx.de I've updated my PMMail/2 helper script to version 2.02 (and renamed it to a more PMMail/2-dedicated Name: PMMIncoming.cmd). This REXX script manipulates malformed emails so that they will be correctly handled by PMMail/2. Version 2.02 is almost a complete rewrite and has many improvements. The following main problems are being addressed by this script: * Subject, From, To, Cc and Reply-To are transformed to ISO-8859-1 if one of the following problems occour: o headerline is encoded in UTF-8 (idicated) o headerline is encoded in ISO-8859-15 (idicated) o headerline has no indicated encoding but is UTF-8 o headerline has no indicated encoding but is ISO-8859-15 (this all would otherwise lead to false Subjects, Froms, etc. if German Umlauts, etc are used) * Body encoding is changed to ISO-8859-1 if Content-Type indicates ISO-8859-15 (this would otherwise lead to a false Body if German Umlauts, etc. are used) * Mime-Version, Content-Type and Content-Transfer-Encoding are added to the header if not present (this would otherwise lead to a false Body if German Umlauts, etc. are used, cause in most cases these mails use ISO-8859-1 encoding - which has to be indicated for PMMail/2 to be recognized) * ISO encoded mails that are falsely set to a 7bit tranfer encoding are set to 8bit (this would otherwise lead to a false body) * Date is adjusted by adding the time difference between used timezone and GMT if PST (PDT) or EST (EDT) is used and no time difference is idicated. (this would otherwise lead to a misinterpretation of the message's timestamp) * Sub-Header in some Multipart mails are checked as well if they contain text and have incomplete headerinformation (this would otherwise again lead to false Body if German Umlauts, etc. are used) Get the script from here: http://www.infinity-2.de (The webpage is available in German and English now.) BTW: I've released an update to the Mozilla-Integration of PMMail/2 too. (The original approach doesn't work with newer Mozillas anymore.) Best regards and season's greetings Axel PS: Let's all hope this script won't be necessary anymore in the near future, when PMMail/2 will hopefully be mainained by VOICE! Top
