Net: New OS/2 Unicode API programming reference

2006-07-25
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Alex Taylor" posted on comp.os.os2.announce

I've undertaken to revamp and update the abysmal Toolkit documentation for
the OS/2 Unicode API (a.k.a. Universal Language Support).

The work is still in progress, but my first updated release is ready for
the public: http://www.cs-club.org/~alex/os2/toolkits/uls/index.html

You can browse it online, or download the zipped HTML file.

This is based on the IBM UNIAPI.HTM document from the 4.5x toolkit, but
includes the following improvements:

* Completely reformatted the HTML (including a simple built-in stylesheet)
to make it actually readable. It should remain compatible with all old
web
browsers, of course.

* Added a section describing API return codes.

* Several incorrect, poorly-expressed or just plain misleading function
descriptions have been fixed. And some previously missing descriptions
have been added (in particular, UniStrToUcs -- the IBM version actually
had a duplicate description for UniUconvToUcs pasted in under this heading
instead).

* Many clarifications, improvements, and helpful comments have been added.

* Some of the sample code has been replaced or rewritten with code that
actually works.

* All this, and I actually managed to reduce the size of the HTML file
by about 20 KB (mostly by deleting redundant code added by whatever
idiot HTML editor IBM used to originally create it).

Still TODO:
* Add a section for the ULS keyboard functions (which were inexplicably
removed from the documentation after the 4.0 Toolkit).

Since it's directly derived from IBM's own documentation, I suppose there's
a bit of a legal question mark over it... but I frankly doubt that IBM will
care.

SW: Cairo Graphics library on OS/2 v 1.2.0

2006-07-25
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

There is a recent new OS/2 drop of the Cairo Graphics library on the
Netlabs ftp server.

Cairo website: http://www.cairographics.org/introduction (Caution site may
load extremely slowly)

"Cairo is a 2D graphics library with support for multiple output devices.
Currently supported output targets include the X Window System, win32, and
image buffers. Experimental backends include OpenGL (through glitz),
Quartz, XCB, PostScript and PDF file output.
Cairo is designed to produce consistent output on all output media while
taking advantage of display hardware acceleration when available (eg.
through the X Render Extension).

The cairo API provides operations similar to the drawing operators of
PostScript and PDF. Operations in cairo including stroking and filling
cubic Bézier splines, transforming and compositing translucent images, and
antialiased text rendering. All drawing operations can be transformed by
any affine transformation (scale, rotation, shear, etc.)

Cairo is implemented as a library written in the C programming language,
but bindings are available for several different programming languages.

Cairo is free software and is available to be redistributed and/or modified
under the terms of either the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL)
version 2.1 or the Mozilla Public License (MPL) version 1.1. "

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Adrian Gschwend

I'm happy to announce that Dmik ported Psi to eCS! Psi is a multi platform
Jabber client written in qt3 and as you might know Dmik ported qt3 to eCS
and OS/2.

Official Psi homepage: http://psi.affinix.com/

You can get the current alpha release here:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/qt3/psi-0.10-os2-a1.zip

Sample screenshot:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/misc/jabberos2.png

If you run into problems please report the bug in the TRAC:

http://svn.netlabs.org/qt3/ticket/25

Note that we had to close anonymous access for the tickets because of
spammers. If you have a netlabs.org account you can use that one, if not
please user "guest" as username and "netlabs" as password.

If you want to know more about qt3 for eCS and OS/2 check

http://svn.netlabs.org/qt3

This port shows that qt3 is now ready to use on eCS and OS/2, you are very
welcome to port qt3 based applications to our platform!

We would appreciate it if someone would provide a WarpIN Script for Psi so
we can release future versions as WarpIN Package as well. Please report it
to the TRAC System in case you can contribute that!

Thanks to Dmik for the work!

SW: New Release SigmaMD5 (version 1.41)

2006-07-27
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Keith Merrington"

I have just uploaded the latest version (1.41) of SigmaMD5 to hobbes. It
is currently in the directory \pub\incoming but will be moved in the next
few days most probably to \pub\os2\util\misc. The filename is
SigmaMD5v1.41.zip

Incoming: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/sigmamd5v1.41.zip
Search: HTTP://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=sigmamd5v1.41.zip

SigmaMD5 Reads & Creates MD5 checksum files. Is compatable with the output
of Linux GNU MD5SUM and can check the eCs CD's for correct data using the
MD5 checksum list files on the CD's. Provides a clear visual indication of
checksum status (error's etc.) as well as error sorting, file filtering and
comprehensive logging facilities.

This version has a number of enhancements:

Progress window to show progress when loading MD5 List file > 20KB and
when saving a MD5 List file containing more than 10,000 records.
Support for Chinese (Taiwanese) and French Language.
Version Level checking of Language DLL's.
In the Drive Not Ready dialogue and the Create MD5 File Dialogue, the
label of each drive is now shown.

The future plans are to add the Spanish language and to increase the
maximum number of records that can be handled.

If YOUR language is missing and you are willing to do some translation work
then I will be only to pleased to incorporate your language in a
future

SW: Martin's Server Suite (including latest version of Snug HTTP

2006-07-30
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: nielsenDESPAM@DESPAMteamnord.dk

Both YAFS and Snug HTTP server is written in C for maximum flexibility.
Both servers can be ported to many plattforms and currently runs on Linux,
NetBSD, OS/2 Warp 3 and 4, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (with TCP/IP
installed) and later versions of Microsoft Windows. Versions included in
MSS runs on WfW 3.11, OS/2 and Win32. The servers can handle many
connections simultaneously but runs as a single-threaded process which
makes the system requirements very low. Focus is on security, stability and
not making the server bloated with lots of unnecessary features. Neither
YAFS and Snug HTTP server is bloatware and does not pollute your system in
any way. Installation is a one-banana job, simply unpack the package and
edit the configuration files and that's it. All this makes MSS the right
choice if you want to share files on a network or serve files on the
Internet in a fast, secure and easy way.

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Peter Koller"

Maul Publisher is an industrial strength desktop publisher capable of
creating virtually all of the printing seen on everyday household items. You
can use it to easily lay out newspapers, cards, books, labels, stamps,
posters, charts, forms, and even designs like building plans or furniture

* Adds automatic codepage translation for a variety of situations:-
- From text object codepage to OS/2 native when copying.
- From OS/2 native to text object codepage when pasting.
- To unicode where it is required for the import preview window.
(requires the "Times New Roman MT 30" font to display kanji characters.)
* Adds automatic codepage switching when painting embedded frame clipart.
(This enables a dbcs text object to be embedded into a unicode table
object, for
example.)

be up
to 6 bytes per char.)
* Fixes a memory leak in the codepage dialog.

or later
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=maule

Unzip all the files in the .\maul\install directory where maul was
installed and run the installer. You need to install the binary executive
and library files, as well as the appropriate language packs. It is safe to
