Event: Warpstock Europe NEWS report

2006-11-09
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: infoDESPAM@DESPAMwarpstock.net

Hi, this is the latest news report from the Warpstock Europe organisation team.

While some things that we are preparing behind the scene are working very,
very well (and we can't wait to get it started!), today we also have some
bad news:

DINNER AT YOUTH HOSTEL:
-----------------------
Morons! After having talked with them on several occasions since February
2006, the youth hostel TODAY (November 8th) has made us aware that warm
lunch and warm dinner would always mean two identical meals a day. Funny
people.
So prepare for a warm lunch and a "German family home dinner": Breads,
cold-cut meats, cheese, and perhaps a warm side-dish or salads (if we're
lucky).
(Read full story for our decision "warm lunch, cold dinner" on the website)
I'm already preparing a list of alternate places that one can go to for
dinner.

If you have reserved DINNER:
Luckily, we didn't collect money for the meals but only reservations! This
way, if you prefer to NOT have dinner at the YH (although you have already
reserved for it), simply tell so at the Warpstock Europe registration desk...

SCHEDULE:
---------
No changes today. :-)

SPONSORS AND SUPPORTERS:
------------------------
I have added the list of Sponsors and Supporters of this years Warpstock
Europe on their very own subpage. Kindly notice who has contributed to our
event and keep that in mind for next time when you want to buy or donate
something. ;-)

TRAVELLER INFO:
---------------
ARGH! Constructions EVERYWHERE! Half of the parking lot of the YH was
conquered by the City of Cologne's construction department to stack
material for the flood protection improvement measures. This means: Less
parkings.
If you're in trouble, either turn around back in direction of the Zoo (the
parkings are not free) or continue towards the bridge and take the first
next exit right for a street called "Kuhweg"... according to the YH staff,
chances are that you will find parking spots there.
But be careful: That bridge lanes are one-way. If you need to cross the
river, you'll have to do a large left turn to get back onto the bridge and
then you'll have to keep going up to Zoo to get back on the riverbank
driveway to the Youth Hostel!

Constructions (continued) - CENTRAL STATION CHAOS!
Also, the public transport at Cologne has decided to improve the stations
around the Central Station. Good idea - wrong time: For doing so, the
north/south-connection below Central Station is cut from now until summer
2007! This leads to severe detours and temporary creation of new lines.
While the Youth Hostel has prepared information sheets to take away that
explain what to do, travellers arriving at Central Station (also from the
airport!) will be faced to a complete mess!
Basically, you must now leave Central Station in the opposite direction
for exit "Breslauer Platz" and move left to a new temporary subway entrance
to get a tram to the YH.
I first need to check possible connections to the YH from Central Station
myself (today, Thursday) and will then publish updated information at the
website. Stay tuned!

INFRASTRUCTURE:
---------------
The website (check the NEWS page!) has relevant information about how
public internet access was set up for our visitors.

TICKET PREORDER CLOSING FRIDAY:
-------------------------------
The Mensys shop page for WSE tickets will be closed as of Friday, November
10th at 17:00 (5 pm). After that time, get your ticket onsite at the
registration desk.

PAYMENT FOR MEALS AT YH:
------------------------
If you're not already fed up with that meals mess at the Youth hostel,
please note that payment for lunch/dinner is also possible now (and
preferred) at the Warpstock Europe registration desk. This enables us to
give a single call to the kitchen staff when we pass along the money and
will help us tracking if we need to alert the YH if more people want to
have lunch/dinner than we have estimated (so everyone will have something
to eat! ).

That's it for today.
Hope to see you (despite the troubles ) in Cologne next week!

SW: Tesseract OCR-application available for OS/2

2006-11-09
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Franz Bakan, posted on comp.os.os2.apps

if you want to try another OCR-engine ...
I have compiled the 'Tesseract Open Source OCR Engine' (
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tesseract-ocr ) for OS/2 / eCS

Currently it only recognizes English and its character set is only
US-ASCII. Training code IS included in the open source release however, and
will be included in a future release.

You can download the OS/2-executable (including build-instructions) from my
website:

SW: WDSibyl 20061114

2006-11-13
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

Wolfgang Draxler has released a new update to WDSibyl on the netlabs ftp
site. There are both OS/2 and Win32 sources and binaries. Help is in
both German and English.

Homepage (In German, Dutch and English):
http://members.chello.at/webstar/wdsibyl.html

"This is a Pascal-Compiler which processes a language closely related to
»Delphi«."

Download: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/wdsibyl/wdsibyl/install_20061114.zip

Support is provided through:

International: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.sibyl.devel

German language: http://www.commtalk.de/ (currently below: OS/2 Development)

From the included IDE.TXT file, translated from German using Babel Fish:

"WDSibyl is an advancement of Sibyl, which was developed some years ago by
the company Speedsoft and given up then. The original to source of the IDE
are subject the GPL (general Public License) and are down loadable by
Hobbes. The original source of RTL, SPCC etc. was made available by
SpeedSoft already some years ago on their homepage.

Since the company Speedsoft nolonger exists, I have to compile begun this
source and it developed after longer time into "WDSibyl". With this product
also come some innovations (e.g. USB -, ODBC - are, Joystick support,
storing the position and colors of the component, some classes of other
persons etc..) and a quantity of corrections.

My changes and/or extension of the source are subject also to GPL.

I do not take responsibility for direct or indirect damage by the use of
the product. But if someone has an error or a problem with WDSibyl, I am
pleased about feedback by E-Mail.

Since I cannot program and/or write everything, I could use assistance to
develop this product further. Mainly are missing:
o new components and/or source.
o Documentation.
o Tests and continue to develop the product

You contact the developer at wdsibylDESPAM@DESPAMchello.at"

Event: Warpstock Europe: Latest news

2006-11-14
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: infoDESPAM@DESPAMwarpstock.net

Hi, this is the latest (and maybe last until the event starts) news report
from the Warpstock Europe Organisation team.

PRESENTATIONS / SCHEDULE:
-------------------------
Changes might happen!
The problem is that Henrik Heigl of CACert had to cancel his appearance
quite suddenly. We are now in the process of checking if/who/how someone
else can take over his sessions.
If there's no solution at hand, we will simply cancel the INT07 sessions
and fill the gaps with the sessions from the last slot of Sunday. That way,
we will return to a closing of WSE at 17:15 (5:15pm) that we actually had
planned.
Note: This only affects the CACert- *SESSIONS*! Assurance digital
certificates will still be possible of course at the booth of Team OS/2
Koeln/Bonn e.V.!
(As soon as we have news for this, we'll broadcast them here)

"PBX on eComStation" - revealed:
The acronym "PBX" (which I didn't hear of too much until now) stands for
Private Branch eXchange and means a private phone network with a central
controlling system, although there's much more to it.
So if you want to see a live, brand-new, state-of-the-art commercial
solution that enters the market with eComStation on board, you shouldn't
miss these presentation.
(more details on the website)

TRAVELLER SERVICE
-----------------
Cologne Central Station:
Basically, it's quite simple: Exit central station at either gate on the
"Breslauer Platz" side (the side "without cathedral" this is in
direction of ASCENDING track numbers). Then turn left to follow the "U"
signs (meaning "U"nderground). After approx. 300-400 meters get down into
the subway station, taking either entry - all ends up the same single track
that is the terminus of Line 19 (the only one). SO get into the 19 in
direction of "Buchheim" and exit the tran at station "Boltensternstrasse".
Again, ake a walk of about 400 meters to get into the Youth Hostel (we wil
have put signs there by thursday evening).
(description will also be published on website)

Parkings at YH:
Yesterday I tried to find addtional parkings. You don't have to use the Zoo
parking lot - especially since the entry was closed although there appear
to have been free spaces and because it's not really close to the YH.
If all spaces at the YH are taken, leave the parking and turn right into
the direction of the bridge. After approx. 500 meters, there's a street
named "Am Kuhweg" that will exit on the right (also indicated by "Hafen" or
"Bus parking").
Follow that street!
Pass under the bridge and follow up to the Bus Parking that will be on your
right in 200 more meters. There should be enough free space in this area.
From here, it's a 15 minute walk back to the YH using the reverse way.
Returning: Leave the Bus parking and turn right. At the corssing, do a
"U-turn" and enter the exit that ascends on your right (direction
"Zentrum"). Change lanes onto the driveway and continue straight ahead.
Then, turn either left towards centre town or right for accessing the
motorway A1 (or A3, A4, A57 via the Koeln-Nord junction).

TICKET PRESALE:
---------------
I don't know why one would want to make this a secret - perhaps one or the
other is interested in this:
The WSE tickets page was "closed" on Friday. Although not everybody was
able to find a combination for his visit, we have been able to sell an
average of more than 60 tickets for each event day! This means more than
180 tickets were sold, which is quite impressive as we expect to sell quite
a lot of 1-day tickets at the desk in addition. As soon as we have visitor
numbers from the event, I will poste them here so that the WSE2007 team
knows what to expect... :-)

Well that was all for today - see you in Cologne!

SW: Generic MAC Wrapper (Genmac) 2.00 & XWLAN 3.0 released!

2006-11-15
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Adrian Gschwend

The famous Generic MAC Wrapper Driver (GenMac) of Willibald Meyer is now
available in Version 2.00. Due to the support of many more network
interface cards, the new version has grown too big to remain packed into
one archive file. Instead it has been split into a package for the main
GenMac driver, and additional, vendor specific driver packages.

See the online help in the main package for the revision history,
installation instructions, more information about which network interface
cards are support, and detailed information on how to submit bug reports
including debug data.

Thanks a lot to Willibald Meyer for his work!
