2006-05-16 Tom left the date off of the initial post. Sat, May 20, 2006 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Tom Brown Ah! Another morning of OS/2 to look forward to at SCOUG's May meeting. We have a full slate planned: * Tony Butka is bringing his AMD machine to show us SMP. * For the Programming SIG, Bob Blair gives us Hello Newer World in his Intro to PM Programming. * Steven Levine hosts a Live Help Desk with a couple of systems that have issues of (hopefully) general interest. Got questions? SCOUG has answers! Our Q&A session at each meeting gives you a great opportunity to work the kinks out of your systems. Plus, don't forget, we always have coffee and donuts. Make sure to be at SCOUG in May! Almost full feature set of GBM.DLL is provided by the REXX API. I/O remapping is not supported due to language restrictions. Get package gbmos2rx101_bin.zip from Hobbes. It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below). GBM File Dialog REXX adapter library (GBMDLGRX 1.01) ---------------------------------------------------- (Public Domain) The REXX adapter DLL allows REXX programmers to use the GBM File Dialog in their programs. It requires availability of GBM.DLL and the GBM File Dialog DLLs (GBMDLG.DLL and GBMDLG.HLP). Get package gbmos2rx101_bin.zip from Hobbes. It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below). GBM.DLL 1.39 and GBM command line tools --------------------------------------- (Public Domain) The Generalised Bitmap Module (GBM) is a library capable of loading and saving bitmap files in a variety of popular and less popular bitmap file formats. 2006-05-17 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Doodle (doodleDESPAM@DESPAMscenergy.dfmk.hu) The Simple DirectMedia Layer version 1.2.10 OS/2 port has been uploaded to Netlabs (05/17/2006). Please note that this is not binary compatible to the previous SDL/2 releases, so a recompilation of SDL applications is needed. To force this, the DLL has been renamed to SDL12.DLL. http://sdl.netlabs.org/index.phtml The packages are currently in incoming, but will be moved to their final places soon: Binary ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/sdl/sdl-1.2.10-bin-20060517.zip Source Code ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/sdl/sdl-1.2.10-src-20060517.zip This is a cross-platform multimedia library designed to provide low level access to audio, keyboard, mouse, joystick, and 2D video framebuffer. It is used by MPEG playback software, emulators, and many popular games. 2006-05-17 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: daleerwinDESPAM@DESPAMinfonegocio.net.pe Brutus is a Java application to organize and catalog the things we collect like Albums, Movies, Books, Operas, Sheet Music, Software on CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, or in digital files (MP3, PDF, etc) on the computer. The second beta of the first release is available here: http://www.casaerwin.com/brutus.zip and a brief install tutorial at: http://www.casaerwin.com/Install.txt If you have the previous beta installed, I do not suggest installing this one over the top of it because there has been a change in the directory structure. In such a case, I suggest simply deleting all the files in the directory except for the four database files: BrutusDB.xxxxx. Then unzip the new beta over that, and anything you have already entered will still be intact. Top
2006-05-17 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley Hi All, I've just updated the OS/2 build of ffplay, a simple media player based on SDL and on the FFmpeg libraries. The major reason for the update is that Doodle has released updated versions of SDL. For those that have experienced problems with no audio when using ffplay, see readme.os2 for a workaround which involves setting an environment variable before starting ffplay. Updated ffplay can be downloaded from http://smedley.info/os2ports.html - or from the work-in-progress new site at http://smedley.info/os2ports/ Cheers, Paul Smedley Adelaide, Australia 18th May, 2006 Top

2006-05-19 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net> One of my favorite/most useful programs, has long been Duxshelf for OS/2. Duxshelf is the fast, light, combination of the American Heritage Dictionary, and Concise Columbia Encyclopedia. I have used this software on every computer I have owned, and even bought it (no longer sold) as a gift for others. So it puzzled me when I would read about other knowledgeable OS/2 users who could not get it running on their systems. I am no longer puzzled. This week, while making a change to my Styler/2 settings, I decided to select the Styler/2 option "Use Styler/2 font" to replace system fonts with Waprsans. Later that evening I needed to use Duxshelf, which promptly crashed, without even fully opening. Since that was the only system change I had made, I started digging into Styler/2. Sure enough, that option was the culprit. After fixing my system, I wrote to another individual that I had tried helping previously to get Dux's American Heritage Dictionary installed, and running. Despite our best efforts, we failed to do so. Again, Styler/2's "Use Styler/2 font" turned out to be the culprit on his system. The solution follows: Go to the Styler/2 Preferences notebook. Select the Dialogs page. You will see under "General options" the Use Styler/2 font box. Leave this selection ticked (with a checkmark). Look to the right top of this page. You will see that this is page 1 of 2. Go to page 2. You will see an "Exceptions list". Use the "Find" button below to select the path to DUX.EXE. Select it, and press the Add button. Now Dux will open as expected, and you can continue to use Styler/2's "Use Styler/2 font" feature. Good luck, Sander Nyman Top

2006-05-20 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley I've just uploaded an initial build of The Battle for Wesnoth for OS/2 & eComStation to my ports page at http://smedley.info/os2ports.html & the work-in-progress new site at http://smedley.info/os2ports/ The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme. Fight a desperate battle to reclaim the throne of Wesnoth, or take hand in any number of other adventures. More information is available at http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/Description It was built using Innotek GCC v3.3.5 CSD1 version and requires the runtime dll from ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.0-ga2.zip The necessary SDL dll's are included, however it is worthwhile checking ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/sdl for newer versions. At the time of writing, ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/sdl/sdl-1.2.10-bin-20060517.zip is the latest. This has not been tested extensively, but I have played through a couple of tutorials, and fired up the editor (wesnoth_editor.exe). In particular, campaignd.exe, cutter.exe, exploder.exe & wesnothd.exe have not been tested at all, but are included for the brave at heart. Please send any feedback or encouragement on this release to paulDESPAM@DESPAMsmedley.info, bugs can be reported via the bug tracker at http://mantis.smedley.info Finally, for those that feel so inclined, can support my efforts via Paypal using the link at http://smedley.info/os2ports/ Cheers, Paul Smedley Adelaide, Australia 20th May, 2006 Top

2006-05-23 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Walter F. Metcalf There is a new V.O.I.C.E. project being considered which involves VOICE buying the rights and source code to PMMail for OS/2. We would then repair existing bugs in the program, and then add the necessary features to PMMail for OS/2 bring it in line with other modern email clients. VOICE would then release a brand new PMMail for OS/2 client. Since buying PMMail for OS/2 involves a considerable sum of money, this project is open only to paid-up VOICE members. Likewise the Ballot to get permission to proceed with the project has been sent ONLY to paid-up VOICE members, and voting is currently underway. If you consider yourself a member of VOICE, but did not receive an announcement about this project and how to vote, then it may be that your VOICE membership has expired.
