From: Walter Metcalf

Hello everyone,

In order to lessen confusion in VOICE's New PMMail Project, the mailing
lists for the project have been changed as follows.

1) NewPMM changed into NewPMDis and made unmoderated.

Anyone can join by sending the following email to
MajorMajor@os2voice.org:

SUBSCRIBE NEWPMDIS {email address)
END

This mailing list is open to anyone interested in supporting or
following the New PMMail project.

2) There is a new, controlled NewPMDev list.

Closed List; restricted to Developers only.

"The new mailing list, NewPMDev is in fact UN-moderated, but CONTROLLED.

The VOICE NEWS is an example of a moderated list: the moderator, Mark Dodel,
reviews, and sometimes edits, every message before posting.

There will be no such reviewing of messages posted to NewPMDev, so it is
UNMODERATED.

It is CONTROLLED because the SUBSCRIBE command can only be used by the
list's
owner, i.e. me: meaning that you have to send me a message to be added to
the list.
(Technically, it is the SUBSCRIBE command that is CONTROLLED.)

The mailing list NewPMDis is unmoderated and uncontrolled."

Everyone who was a member of NewPMM at Midnight June 7, has had their
membership transfered to NewPMDis. NewPMM is now defunct.

*Moderated means that to join the list, you must email the moderator at
walter dot os2 at rogers dot com, and ask to be added to the list.

If you have any questions about these new lists, please send an email to
newpmdis at os2voice dot org or, as a last resort to walter dot os2 at
rogers dot com.

Thanks,

Walter

SW: Tame build updated 1.0.3f

2006-06-12
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

As the release of Sane 1.0.18 is approaching, I thought it was about time
to get an updated OS/2 build out there for testing.

Tame 1.0.3f is now available from http://smedley.info/os2ports/

A list of devices supported by Sane is at
http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs-cvs.html

Note that there are firmware loading problems with the Epson Perfection
2480/2580/3490/3590 scanners that are currently unresolved.

New backends in Sane 1.0.18 will include - pixma, dell and hp3500. The
scanners that these backends support can be found at
http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-cvs.html

As always, feedback is appreciated - particularly if your scanner used to
work in an older version of Tame/Sane and doesn't now. In this event,
debug logs from a working version of Sane and a non-working version of Sane
are most useful.

Thanks,

Paul.

SW: DFMerge/2 Version 0.8.0.1

2006-06-12
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Herwig Bauernfeind

As the announcement of version 0.8.0 did not appear on most news services
(probably a really evil conspiracy as they are en vogue at the moment),
here is a bugfix release of PDFMerge/2, a freeware tool to manipulate PDF
or PS files in the following ways:

- Concatenate multiple PDF files into a single one.
- Split PDF files into single pages.
- Rearrange these pages.
- Compose a new PDF file from single (or multiple) pages or PDF documents.
- Save sets of PDF files to disk and reload these sets into PDFMerge later
for further processing.
- Preview pages while manipulating.
- Print multiple PDF files to a PS or PCL printer at once (experimental).

Recent additions:
+Added: Toolbar with most often used functions
+Added: Menu: Copy filename to clipboard
+Added: Left clicking onto the preview of the selected file opens the file
*Changed: Made menu structure more CUA compliant
*Changed: Better thumbnail caching algorithm
!Fixed: Bug in D'n'D code
!Fixed: "Erase Source" could not handle tagged files
Fixed: "Erase Source" also deleted the enclosed Empty.PDF (for empty pages)
!Fixed: Files having spaces in their name or path could not be handled
!Fixed: If one toggled preview window before a file was loaded the empty
preview window would appear.

Despite the version number below 1.0.0, this is only bugfix release to the
final version of PDFMerge/2 0.8.0 as it turned out that the current
architecture (especially the GUI) was a major obstacle for adding new
features. A complete rewrite from scratch is in the works and all future
efforts will go into this new project (see a current screenshot on my website).

Requires:
VROBJ.DLL (VX-REXX runtime dll),

GhostScript 8.53 ( http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/AFPL/ ),

Mensys press release regarding status of WIN32PRN (running Windows

2006-06-13
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Roderick Klein

Haarlem, The Netherlands

Mensys B.V. is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with
Vitaliy Tymchyshyn from the Ukraine. With this agreement all rights for
the WIN32PRN project and source code are transferred to Mensys.

Mr Tymchyshyn has started the WIN32PRN project in 2002 and worked on making
a base to load the Windows printer driver DLL's on OS/2. More information
on this project can be found on www.os2warp.be:
http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=win32prn
(Please note that this website still needs to be updated and that the
downloads no longer work).

We however wanted to inform the community that with the transfer of the
source code we want to make the project move forward again as soon as
possible. This in answer to the frequently seen question in public forums
what happened to the WIN32PRN project. Obviously we are committed to
provide better printer support on the eComStation platform.

The WIN32PRN project explained:

The WIN32PRN project aims (with the help of the ODIN project) to run
Windows printer driver DLL's on OS/2/eComStation. A printer driver for a
printer is a different kind of driver than for example a network or
videocard driver. Most drivers that control a device run on at kernel level
of the operating system, because they require direct hardware access.
However a printer driver (as its normally referred to) is basically a set
of DLL (programs) from a printer vendor that translate the data stream
from the operating system in a data stream the printer of that vendor can
understand.

To print you basically need 2 kind of drivers. The first driver does run at
kernel level just like a driver for a network card, in this case the driver
that sends the data via hardware to your USB, parallel or serial port.
This is mostly standardized and normally does not require a vendor specific
driver.

The tricky part is the most inkjet printers and low end laser printers
normally use a printer language that is non-standard (like for example PCL
or postscript).
What the printer driver in this case does, is that it sends a data stream
to the printer that printer understands. The solution that WIN32PRN
provides, is to create a printer object that loads the proper DLL files
that normally run on Windows and that output is sent to the printer port
under eComStation.

Current status of the project:

For the coming couple of months there is no beta to be expected, we are
currently investigating the code and will announce more information as soon
as it is appropriate.

From: Eugene Gorbunoff

eComStation and OS/2 Warp platform are growing evolutionary. The current
task is to attract new users. If we want achieve this, we should create
more exceptional software based on particular technologies of our operating
system.
The previous few weeks was dedicated to development of base drivers, update
of WorkPlace shell applications, creation of auxiliary utilities and
support of users.

New and updated drivers:
* New driver "ACPI snooper" is under construction. It is aimed to
reconfigure IRQs, reload ACPI tables, etc. -- internal beta-version
* Updated Power management driver APM.ADD v1.1 (requires ACPI.PSD v2.9)
** Improved batteries support; APM.ADD is able to switch computer to S1
state (weak sleep state)
** Download the driver from eComStation beta-zone
(http://betazone.ecomstation.nl)
** Post bug-reports to ACPI forum
(http://forum.ecomstation.ru/viewforum.php?f=19)

Stable version of eSchemes
* eSchemes is a system which allows change system colors, icons and WPS
properties via scheme files (http://ecomstation.ru/eschemes)
* Fresh eSchemes 1.26 is published in the eComStation beta-zone
(http://betazone.ecomstation.nl)
* Whatsnew: improved stability, WPS Hangs was fixed, Using external Scheme
class.
* We created scheme file format access SOM library. It can be used from any
SOM-ready application (ObjectREXX, C, C++).
* IconThemes and old schemes from Scheme palette are converted to eSchemes
format.
* A lot of various fixes in eSchemes editor.
* More languages are supported.

Personal cards manager product is approaching to public beta-testing
* More internal beta versions
* Here is the screenshot of Personal Cards Manager address book
(http://ecomstation.ru/projects/wpperson/pics/PCM-AddressBook-20060615b.png)

TCP/IP utilities
* "General network utilities" (set of graphical tcp/ip utilities) are
approaching to public beta-testing
* New "Firewall ports setup", internal beta

Updated toolkits:
* SOM Compiler Pascal Emitter, several internal alpha versions

eCo Software support service
* The database of compatible hardware consists of 870 reports. Post your
report about supported video-adapters (http://ecomstation.ru/hardware.php)
