2006-06-17 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Tom Brown The next SCOUG meeting will be Saturday, June 17, 9:30 AM - 1 PM We are going to start off with the long awaited "Tony does SMP" presentation. He's going to show us how to install eCS2.0 beta with SMP on his dual CPU Athlon setup. If time permits, we will also get to see how the latest ACPI drivers from the eComStation BetaZone get along with this setup. Moving along, Bob Blair is going to continue with the next installment of his "Introduction to PM Programming" tutorial. And, the Programming SIG will also give us an update on the current status of the development of the Developer's Assistant. Got questions? SCOUG has answers! Our Q&A session at each meeting gives you a great opportunity to work the kinks out of your systems. Plus, don't forget - snooze, you lose - we always have free coffee and donuts. Make sure to be at SCOUG in June! For additional information and directions, see: http://www.scoug.com/meetings.html Top
2006-06-17 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley Now available from http://smedley.info/os2ports/ The Atari 2600 Video Computer System (VCS), introduced in 1977, was the most popular home video game system of the early 1980's. Now you can enjoy all of your favorite Atari 2600 games on your PC thanks to Stella! Stella is a multi-platform Atari 2600 VCS emulator released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Stella was originally developed for Linux by Bradford W. Mott, however, since its original release several people have joined the development team to port Stella to other operating systems such as AcornOS, AmigaOS, DOS, FreeBSD, IRIX, Linux, OS/2, MacOS, Unix, and Windows. The development team is working hard to perfect the emulator and we hope you enjoy our effort. New in v2.2: Stella release 2.2 for Linux, Mac OSX, Windows, WinCE and GP2X is now available. Ports to other operating systems will be released as they become available. A partial list of features is: * Added new ROM browser option which works like a normal filesystem browser, allowing navigation throughout the filesystem. The old mode of browsing is still present, and can be toggled at runtime. Related to this, fixed bug whereby sorting in the ROM launcher sometimes didn't work. * Integrated stella.pro properties into the application, resulting in faster startup time. Now Stella can be redistributed as a single binary; no external files are needed, but they will still be used if present. * Reworked ROM properties files once again. The 'user.pro' file has been removed, and all user-defined properties are stored in 'stella.pro' instead. You should delete all properties files when upgrading to this version, to take advantage of the speed increases. * Reworked settings files once again. Removed all references to a global settings file. Each user now gets a user-specific settings file only. If that file doesn't exist, the built-in defaults are used. * Added 'conditional saving' of the cheatcode and settings files, so that these files are only written to disk when absolutely necessary. This doesn't really affect desktop systems, but is very useful for systems with flashram-based storage (GP2X, WinCE, etc). * Reworked Settings class, hopefully fixing a bug whereby settings weren't being saved in certain cases (most evident in the OSX port). * Added 'tiadefaults' commandline option, which can also be toggled from within the GUI. This option disables all TIA positioning 'tweaks' that typically make a game look better, and present the image exactly as it would appear on a real 2600. * Added jitter-detection code for the paddle emulation, which should eliminate an annoying 'jittering' effect when using paddles with a Stelladaptor. * Related to jitter-detection, added '-pthresh' commandline option and GUI entry, which sets a bound below which the emulation detects jitter. * Fixed crash when adding one-shot cheats. * Fixed bug in RAM comparitive searches in the debugger. * Fixed bug with setting snapshot naming type from the GUI (it was always being set to 'romname'). * Re-added low compatibility CPU emulation mode, since it benefits some slower systems. This is activated with the commandline argument '-cpu low'. Top

2006-06-22 From: Roderick Klein Solution Technologies, Boca Raton, Florida, United States Mensys B.V. , Haarlem, The Netherlands Paul Smedley, Greenwith, South Australia Solution Technology, Mensys B.V. and Paul Smedley have come to an agreement to work together to provide a solution for legacy OS/2/eComStation applications that use a TWAIN interface to control a flatbed scanner. TWAIN provides a standard interface that applications can use to control a scanner. All scanners currently supported on the OS/2/eComStation platform that have a driver with a TWAIN interface are legacy scanners with a SCSI interface. The result is that applications that ship with a TWAIN interface are not very useful anymore because modern scanners are not supported. Solution Technologies has provided the source code of its OS/2 TWAIN DDK so an interface can be built between SANE and TWAIN. The result will be that applications that access a flatbed scanner via a TWAIN interface will be able to utilize USB scanners with the aid of the open source scanner driver SANE (http://www.sane-project.org/) Kent Swan from Solution Technology: "This agreement enables Solution Technology to keep supporting its corporate OS/2/eComStation customers with up to date scanner support. The OS/2 kernel provides very good multi tasking and stability, the reason why some our customers prefer to run our scanner solutions on OS/2/eComStation. In conjunction with this agreement and the development Serenity Systems is doing for the eComStation we can provide our customers with a solution to keep their critical business processes going." Paul Smedley from Australia and other developers have over the years been maintaining a port of the open source scanner driver SANE on the OS/2/eComStation platform. When a beta release is ready for release of the TWAIN<->SANE interface it will be included with all SANE builds for OS/2. Custom applications and well known eComStation/OS/2 applications like PMVIEW, Embelish, Star Office for OS/2 etc will be able to use SANE supported USB scanners. Future versions of eComStation will ship with this package and also the TAME software (a program to use in conjunction with SANE). For corporate customers requiring support for their applications, please contact Solution Technology. Top
