SW: Electronic Teller 4.40 Has Been Release

2006-10-24
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Sander Nyman <2sanderdDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

Paul Caron's Electronic Teller 4.40 has been released.

Note: I am not affiliated with Electronic Teller in any way. I just
happen to think it is one of the best damn OS/2 applications available,
PERIOD.

Okay, having said that, Electronic Teller is a native OS/2 - eCS personal
finance program with an elegant, modern user interface. It handles bank,
credit card, cash, asset, liability, and investment accounts, which are
grouped within portfolios. WPS integration includes drag-and-drop and
object launching.

IT is VERY well thought out, extremely fast, configurable, and very stable.
It is remarkably intuitive for a financial program, although it offers
extensive help, and documentation. ET has "Advanced balance forecasting".
Why wait to be depressed about future debt and poverty, when you can
forecast it NOW. Reporting capabilities are extensive. It also utilizes
Blowfish encryption, for the age of identity theft. And yes, it does have
a QIF Converter, so importing/exporting data is possible.

International language support includes US and UK English, Dutch, French,
German, Portuguese, Spanish.

New in this latest version:

* An option to prevent ET from creating a WPS folder and associated
program icons has been added to the installation utility for those who
prefer an uncluttered desktop.

* Investments requiring more decimal digits than specified when the
portfolio was first created are now accommodated.

* The log that used to exist in Due Today to track updates to postdated
transactions has been incorporated into the Account Book. See the
"Account Book - Postdated Log" entry in the "Account Book" help topic for
additional information.

* The Quick Edit dialog has been removed. Quick edits are now performed
in the Simple Addition popup window.

* The Simple Addition popup window will now accept transation flags (a
new button has been added to the left of the Memorize toggle button).

* In Forecasting, Window | Hide (All) / Show (All) menu items have been
added. Options | Save... / Save As... / Open... / Delete... menu items
have been added to save forecasts, and to view and delete them.

* Several fixes have also gone into this release.

You can download ET here if your quick:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/et440.zip

After Hobbes processes incoming files it will be here:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/money/et440.zip

ET is also available from BMT Micro:

http://www.bmtmicro.com/BMTCatalog/os2/eteller.html

There is an OS/2 eZine review of ET from March 2003 (NOTE however that many
features and improvements have been added since this review) here:

SW: FireFox 2.0

2006-10-25
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/

October 25, 2006 Firefox 2 (The Mozilla based web browser) has been released.
Zipfile:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0/contrib/firefox-2.0.en-US.os2.zip
Release Notes: http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0/releasenotes/
Requires a libc0.5.1 based version of the GCC runtime library.
http://www.innotek.de/products/gccos2/download/gccos2download_e.html

What's New in Firefox 2

* Visual Refresh: Firefox 2's theme and user interface have been
updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the
browsing experience.
* Built-in phishing protection: Phishing Protection warns users
when they encounter suspected Web forgeries, and offers to return the user
to their home page. Phishing Protection is turned on by default, and works
by checking sites against either a local or online list of known phishing
sites. This list is automatically downloaded and regularly updated when the
Phishing Protection feature is enabled.
* Enhanced search capabilities: Search term suggestions will now
appear as users type in the integrated search box when using the Google,
Yahoo! or Answers.com search engines. A new search engine manager makes it
easier to add, remove and re-order search engines, and users will be
alerted when Firefox encounters a website that offers new search engines
that the user may wish to install.
* Improved tabbed browsing: By default, Firefox will open links
in new tabs instead of new windows, and each tab will now have a close tab
button. Power users who open more tabs than can fit in a single window will
see arrows on the left and right side of the tab strip that let them scroll
back and forth between their tabs. The History menu will keep a list of
recently closed tabs, and a shortcut lets users quickly re-open an
accidentally closed tab.
* Resuming your browsing session: The Session Restore feature
restores windows, tabs, text typed in forms, and in-progress downloads from
the last user session. It will be activated automatically when installing
an application update or extension, and users will be asked if they want to
resume their previous session after a system crash.
* Previewing and subscribing to Web feeds: Users can decide how
to handle Web feeds (like this one), either subscribing to them via a Web
service or in a standalone RSS reader, or adding them as Live Bookmarks. My
Yahoo!, Bloglines and Google Reader come pre-loaded as Web service options,
but users can add any Web service that handles RSS feeds.
* Inline spell checking: A new built-in spell checker enables
users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms (like
this one) without having to use a separate application.
* Live Titles: When a website offers a microsummary (a regularly
updated summary of the most important information on a Web page), users can
create a bookmark with a "Live Title". Compact enough to fit in the space
available to a bookmark label, they provide more useful information about
pages than static page titles, and are regularly updated with the latest
information. There are several websites that can be bookmarked with Live
Titles, and even more add-ons to generate Live Titles for other popular
websites.
* Improved Add-ons manager: The new Add-ons manager improves the
user interface for managing extensions and themes, combining them both in a
single tool.
* JavaScript 1.7: JavaScript 1.7 is a language update introducing
several new features such as generators, iterators, array comprehensions,
let expressions, and destructuring assignments. It also includes all the
features of JavaScript 1.6.
* Extended search plugin format: The Firefox search engine format
now supports search engine plugins written in Sherlock and OpenSearch
formats and allows search engines to provide search term suggestions.
* Updates to the extension system: The extension system has been
updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization
of extensions.
* Client-side session and persistent storage: New support for
storing structured data on the client side, to enable better handling of
online transactions and improved performance when dealing with large
amounts of data, such as documents and mailboxes. This is based on the
WHATWG specification for client-side session and persistent storage.
* SVG text: Support for the svg:textpath specification enables
SVG text to follow a curve or shape.

SW: Enhanced Fx 2.0 and Tb 2.0b

2006-10-27
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Peter Weilbacher, posted on news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2

I just finished testing and uploading my enhanced packages of Firefox and
Thunderbird, called PmW-Fx and PmW-Tb. While PmW-Fx corresponds to the
2.0final version of Firefox, PmW-Tb does not correspond to an official
Thunderbird version. Download both apps from my builds page (see sig).

Enhancements over my 1.5.0.x line:
- canvases have correct colors and orientation
- the Firefox 2 SVG:textpath enhancement can actually be tested with
my build, e.g. http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/images/text/toap01.svg
- small changes (mainly to the about dialog credits)
- all Firefox and Thunderbird changes that happened since 1.5

Enhancements over the official packages are the same as always and listed
in the README.txt in the package (and linked on my builds page):
SVG/Canvas, MNG/JNG, WPS enhancement and other stuff.

It will take a few days to prepare a SeaMonkey release corresponding to
these packages and the Gecko1.8.0.8-based releases (for those that don't
yet want to update to 2.0).

SW: Enhanced SeaMonkey 1.1b

2006-10-28
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Peter Weilbacher, posted on
news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2

Firefox 2.0 release. This will become SeaMonkey 1.1 some time this year and
is currently close to 1.1beta. It is available from my builds page (see
sig) and requires libc061 from
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.1-csd1.zip.

The features over the soon to come official SeaMonkey 1.1b release are the
same as with for the PmW-* programs.

As special experimental packages I have added two high memory enabled
builds based on a patch by Andy Willis. I want to encourage everybody and
especially people with older versions of Warp to try these out and to
compare problems with the non highmem builds if possible. We are trying to
get this feature into the main tree but want to make sure first that it
doesn't cause any serious problems. I may add a highmem enabled PmW-Fx
build over the next days, too.

SW: RexxMail build 20061029.082458 released.

2006-10-29
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Marcus de Geus

A new build of RexxMail is available from my web site:

http://www.degeus.com/rexxmail/

RexxMail is an object-oriented WPS e-mail client, written in REXX, which
uses the standard WPS user interface. It features an extensive range of
functions and options with full command-line access.

I forgot to include the list of changes in my previous release message:

Build 20061026.162038:
- Added value list (keyword:path) option to message redirection.
- Added NOT operator option (backslash) to message redirection.
- Added Drafts folder option.
- Added AttachToAllInDrafts command switch.
- Added mail folder renaming: user folder titles can now customized.

Build 20061029.082458:
- Bug fix: Certain characters in user-added folder names would cause
RexxMail to crash.

SW: Larsen Commander updated to 1.6 Beta #12

2006-10-30
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: leifelDESPAM@DESPAMonline.no

Today (October 30 2006) Leif Erik Larsen has released version 1.6 beta #12
of his GUI file manager and command shell, Larsen Commander.

Larsen Commander is a powerful GUI file manager and command shell with a
traditional look and feel inspired by the classic Norton Commander. It
combines the best of two very different worlds; - the command line and the
file management panels. Both available at the same time, even in parallel
while one or more commands are running in the background!

Larsen Commander is extremely useful espessially for advanced users such as
programmers and system administrators that knows the power and the value of
having the command line possibilities and the file operation panels
available at the same time and in the same shell window. In fact, you can
use Larsen Commander almost exactly the same way as you are using the
standard system shell, but with a large number of additional and powerful
features, such as the console monitor being scrollable and not limited to
those "stupid" 25 lines or so.

But Larsen Commander is not only for the advanced users. Even the novice
will find this piece of software very nice at hand. It makes the standard
file operations a play, such as copying, moving and renaming files and
directories. And of course the command line can be 100% disabled and
hidden, for those who never uses it anyway.

Larsen Commander is available at

http://home.online.no/~leifel/lcmd/index.html

Please also be aware of the open online Larsen Commander discussion forum at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lcmd

This new release of Larsen Commander has a lot of fixes and improvements.
For a complete list, take a look at

http://home.online.no/~leifel/lcmd/history_next.html
