SW: USB "configurator" beta4 available

2006-01-24
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Peter Brown

This application is designed to help (re)configure USB drivers and
devices. It is not designed to install USB drivers, the drivers must
already be installed - it should help sort out driver parameters so
the drivers become useful though :-)

Please read the Readme.txt file included in the package before
attempting to install and use the application.

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/USBcfgb4.zip

Or later

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/usbcfgb4.zip

Changes to beta3 are:-

Now checks screen resolution and sizes accordingly when started for
the first time. Resizes if the system is switched to 800*600 or lower;
also repositions app centre screen if the app was closed partially off
screen.

As a result of the above "vga compatability" the app has some visual
changes including new pages to put the changes onto - System, Devices
and Communications now have 2 pages, the Drives page has changed to 2
pages, CD/DVD and Other Drives.

Backups are now made with the filename config.nnn where nnn is a
sequential value between 001 to 999 inc. The higher value the filename
extension the more recent the backup is. If you ever generate
config.999 then the next attempt to create a backup will fail and a
message will be displayed bringing this large number of backups to
your attention...

Checks existing config.sys file for non-standard/default USB Device
Driver locations and stores the relevent details preventing USBcfg
from resetting Device driver paths to the standard/Default locations
when writing a new config.sys file.
Note: Does not hunt through the system for any driver files in
non-default locations but if the driver is already in the config.sys
file that location is used.

Checks for Drivers when a new Device is selected (user checks a
previously unchecked device driver checkbox), Displays a message if
the Driver is not in a Standard directory/Default directory (for most
devices [bootdrive]:\os2\boot) and will not be able to configure the
Device.

The Undo button is still "Global" - undo ALL changes; but it should
work a bit quicker now.

"Local" Undo allowing changes made to be undone by clicking the same
checkbox again now works.

Now searches \os2\boot and the system path for hcimonit.exe
(hcimonit.exe is supplied with the IBM USB Base Driver package).

Updated the Other Drives page, Removables options to include the 2 new
parameters, /CHS and /MS10_OFF, included in the USBMSD.ADD update,
Build 10.162

Added the gphoto2 usb driver, gph2usb.sys, to the application on
Devices, Page 2 of 2

*** Removed the Scanner from Devices, Page 2 of 2 - the driver
involved, USBSCAN.SYS, is no longer required with current builds of
sane (from http://smedley.info/sane.html)

Disabled the Ethernet configuration options. This device should be
installed and configured using MPTS, the details are shown for
completeness of information with the option to Add/Remove the Verbose
parameter being the only active option if the Ethernet driver is
already installed and in use.

Hope the above is of use.

Regards

Pete

SW: SoundMax+VT823x+Uniaud= :-)

2006-01-24
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: "Sander Nyman"<2sanderdDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

If you are the proud owner of an ASUS (or any other) AMD Athlon64
motherboard based on the VIA chipset, here is some GREAT news
regarding yesterdays anouncement of the Uniaud (Universal Audio driver
based on the ALSA project) 1.1.4 Release Candidate 1 driver.

Previously, the only choice for OS/2 & eCS users with the VIA VT823x +
Soundmax AD1980 (or AD1981) chipset combination that ASUS, and some
other motherboard makers have been using was the Uniaud driver, which
yielded poor to very poor sound quality results for that hardware
(note that the Soundmax drivers on Hobbes are only for the Intel +
Soundmax chipset combination). The GREAT news is that the new Uniaud
1.1.4 RC1 drivers are nothing short of an enormous improvement. Sound
quality is EXCELLENT.

If you have this hardware, and you have been getting by with either no
sound, or poor sound quality, and were waiting for the Uniaud final
release, I can whole heartedly recommend that you do your ears a
favor, and upgrade to RC1 *NOW*.

Again, as I previously stated, RC1 is NOT a full release. You will
first need to install the full (old) version:

ftp://ftp.os2.kiev.ua/uniaud/uniaud20040122.zip

Then grab the new release at Netlabs:

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/uniaud/uniaud114rc1.zip

And finally, copy the new files over the old files.

Also, I failed to mention yesterday that there is a newsgroup
available for the Uniaud project at:

http://news.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.uniaud.general

From: madodelDESPAM@DESPAMptd.net

Chuck McKinnis has a utility to configure Internet applications to
allow them to link to one-another. This is particularly useful for
launching FireFox from a link in Thunderbird. Doesn't seem to work
the other way for me though (FireFox email link to Thunderbird). It
can also install Rich Walsh's Run! package which "sets the current
drive, directory, and BeginLibPath to the directory containing the .exe"

loaded after restart of the program.

Unzip all the files in the .\maul\install directory where maul was
installed and run the installer. You need to install the binary executive

SW:Request for help to create codepages

2006-01-29
From: Peter Koller

Maul Publisher is an industrial strength desktop publisher capable of
creating virtually all of the printing seen on everyday household items.
You can use it to easily lay out newspapers, cards, books, labels,
stamps, posters, charts, forms, and even designs like building plans or
furniture arrangements.

Maul Publisher codepages

In order to correctly support the large number of codepages available in
OS/2, Maul Publisher needs to have some basic codepage information.

Unfortunately, the system does not provide sufficient detail to allow
Maul to directly filter words for spell checking and case conversion.

Hence you will find a series of codepages listed at this location:-
http://www.manglais.com/cpg/index.html

Hopefully, these codepages will also be useful for other application
developers who may want use them for case conversion and character
recognition.

If you wish to help to create codepages, please download the most
appropriate similar codepage from those available and modify it as
required. You will need to find a copy of the booklet "IBM OS/2 Warp4
Keyboards and Code Pages". This was provided with original versions of
both Warp3 and Warp4. If you haven't got it, try
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/dev/info/codepages.zip

When you have created a new codepage, please send it to me,
Peter Koller

Thank you very much for your help!

SW: Papyrus for OS/2 in English

2006-01-29
From: 75640_1417DESPAM@DESPAMbellsouth.net

Responding to my inquiry about a Papyrus version for OS/2 in English,
Ulli Ramps wrote:

"There will be a version, for 90% - but first, we will finish version
12, so that the new version for os/2 will be based on the version 12 code."

The reference to "90%" is confusing, but the message is clear: Papyrus
is coming. [version 11 is offered now].

SW: ScummVM v0.8.1 released

2006-01-30
From: "Paul Smedley"

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical
point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data
files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables
shipped with the game, allowing you to play them on systems for which
they were never designed!=20

ScummVM lets you run these adventures: Adventure Soft's Simon the
Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and
Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the
Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM
(Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system. SCUMM is used for
many games, including Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max
and more. Compatibility with supported games is continually improving,
so check back often.=20

Among the systems on which you can play those games are Windows, Linux,
Mac OS X, Dreamcast, PocketPC, PalmOS, AmigaOS, BeOS, OS/2, PSP, PS2,
SymbianOS/EPOC and many more...=20

The OS/2 & eComStation build of ScummVM 0.8.1 is available from the
ScummVM website at http://www.scummvm.org/

A list of changed in 0.8.1 is at
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=3D388756

The download page is http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php

Enjoy!
