2006-04-08 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley Hi All, I've just added a link to Varsha to http://smedley.info/os2ports.html Varsha is a GUI based DVD authoring tool (originally) for Linux. You can make DVDs from your mpeg files Using Varsha, you can also create menus incorporating backdrop of still pictures as well as moving video background. Whilst this isn't a port as such, as Varsha is a java based application, the original distribution at sourceforge had issues on OS/2 and would hang during processing some of the files. I've made some changes/hacks to the java code to get it working on OS/2 & eComStation. It has been tested with Innotek Java 1.4.2 and Goldencode Java 1.4.1 There are still some limitations. For example, there is no OS/2 port of the slideshow program Varsha uses, so making slideshows won't work currently. Also, I haven't yet made any changes so that Varsha can use dvddao to burn the generated ISO to DVD. That will come depending on how much interest there is in this package. readme.os2 inside the zip file contains rough instructions on what is required to get this going. All feedback is appreciated. Bugs can be reported via http://mantis.smedley.info Thanks, Paul Smedley Adelaide, Australia 8th April, 2006. Top

2006-04-10 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Bob St.John (bstjohnDESPAM@DESPAMserenity-systems.com) Available for download to Software Subscription Services customers after login at Mensys or eComStation.biz. You can view the full readme at: http://ewiki.ecomstation.nl/ecomstation20beta2 An excerpt: == INTRODUCTION == This is the second beta release of eComStation 2.0. This product is available for download to all registered eComStation customers of Software Subscription Services. For more information on that, please visit: http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/ - ACPI, This version installs and detects ACPI [updated to release 2.0.6] - SNAP/ENT the special licensed version of SNAP by Serenity is in there, we boot Snap directly from CD-Rom [updated to version 3.1.5, build 500] - Bootable JFS, this version is able to install on bootable JFS volumes. Installing onto a bootable JFS volume will show a dramatic performance increase! - Updated UNIAUD to version 1.1.4 RC1 - Updated all USB drivers to 10.162 - Generally the system has been brought up to date to the eComStation 1.2R release level - Additional debugging tools for bootable JFS (see \ECS\BOOTJFS for the tools and \ECS\DOC\BOOTJFS for documentation) - Replaced Mozilla with Firefox 1.5 & Thunderbird 1.5. Currently they are both installed together. - Replaced EscapeGL screensaver with DS Saver (which can be activated and configured from the desktop properties context menu) - Added Cairo library to enable the Cairo Screensaver modules. - Added Firewall configuration utility. Installed by default when TCP/IP is selected. - Added FAT32 and NTFS (readonly) IFS under "Experimental Features" - Added eSchemes application, a new way to configure the look and feel of the desktop. This is considered highly experimental and as such can only be installed with Advanced Installation, under "Experimental Features" - Added additional eSchemes, as available from http://en.ecomstation.ru/projects/eschemes/ == WHAT TO TEST == We are especially interested in: - stability of Bootable JFS, we know there are some issues with Bootable JFS not being able to boot the system. Please note that if you boot to another volume with 'classic' JFS, you may not be able to access/boot your newly created Bootable JFS volume. To overcome this, you can boot from the eCS 2.0 beta 2 CD and perform a checkdisk from the Maintenance Console. - your experience with eSchemes. The developer needs feedback on the usability, stability and overall performance of eSchemes. - ACPI. It is possible to enable eShutdown (via the desktop properties contecxt menu) If enabled, and if ACPI is detected and installed on your system (automatically by the installer) you will be able to power-off the system with the shutdown button. - Firewall configuration. The Firewall configuration tool may need some tweaking and tuning in it's default values and settings. == DISTRIBUTION / CREATING CDS == This product is provided as a downloadable ISO file, this is a raw CD image that you can burn on CD-R media. For instruction on burning the CD image to CD please consult the PDF document howtoburncds.pdf in the same directory. The file to download is: ecs20beta2_cd1_en.zip (579.826.553 bytes) == TESTING THE DOWNLOADED FILE == You can verify the integrity of the download ISO file using this MD5 checksum: FD57-55AE-5D45-FBC3-FA50-244F-4200-1A19 ecs20beta2_en_cd1.iso To generate the MD5 checksum of your downloaded file, please download from Hobbes: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/encrypt/md5suml.zip == USING DIFF TO REDUCE DOWNLOAD SIZE == If you already downloaded vnext_en_us_a1.zip earlier, you can also download a so called DIFF file, from which you can create the new ISO. This requires you to already have the previous ISO file available. The following DIFF file is offered: 7C3F-E7F7-1C37-BBB8-4824-7CAC-570C-D12F ecs20beta1b-beta2.diff which is contained in \diff\ecs20beta1b-beta2.zip (74.135.973 bytes) Please verify that you have the proper MD5 sum of the DIFF file and the original ISO file as well: 11C2-8EF1-65AB-D0D6-28CD-F48D-83D0-D447 ecs20beta1b_en_cd1.iso In order to create the full ISO out of the older files, issue the following command: (you can change the ISO names of course) gdiff -u ecs20beta1b_en_cd1.iso ecs20beta1b-beta2.diff ecs20beta2_en_cd1.iso GDiff is a tool of Daniel Hellerstein, more information can be found in gdiff.doc or on the following website: http://www.srehttp.org/apps/gdiff/ NOTE: Please verify the resulting ISO to have the correct MD5 sum, mentioned above. 2006-04-10 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel "This package supplies the required REXX scripts, to allow PMMail to use the BogoFilter package (available for separate download, from HOBBES). BogoFilter is a Bayesian filter program. There is the main script, which causes incoming mail to be scanned by BogoFilter, which evaluates the words, to determine if the e-mail is SPAM, or not. It then adds a line in the header, which indicates the results of the evaluation. From that information, a PMMail filter can separate the SPAM into a folder (or the TRASH, if you prefer). Two other filters (or, with PMMail 1.96a, a separate training program) call the REXX scripts to train BogoFilter to recognize e-mail that was not evaluated as SPAM, to be rcognized as SPAM, and to train it to NOT recognize it as SPAM, if it was erroneously evaluated as being SPAM. NEW: bogofilter-1.0.2-os2.zip now supported, available from Paul Smedley: Linux ports to OS/2 & eComStation http://smedley.info/os2ports.html NOTE: I have been unable to get this to work with PMMail 1.96a, and/or warp4. If anyone manages to do that, please let me know. Meanwhile, use either PMMBogoFilter0.5.7 (recommended), or PMMBogoFilter0.6.0. Runs on: OS/2, or eComStation, and PMMail v2.x (tested on v 2.20.2382) Requires: The bogofilter-1.0.2-os2.zip package, available from Paul Smedley at: http://smedley.info/os2ports.html which also requires LIBC061, from: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.1-csd1.zip WarpIn 1.0.9, or higher, available from HOBBES InfoZIP's ZIP and UNZIP" Download: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/pmmbogofilter061.wpi Search: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=pmmbogofilter061.wpi Top

2006-04-13 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Tom Brown Spring into the season with SCOUG! We are going to start our April meeting off with an ePDF tutorial. ePDF is an eCS/OS2 native Adobe Acrobat Distiller. Sandy Shapiro is going to show us how to set up it and what it can do. Just to show that no good deed goes unpunished, Sandy is doing double duty this month. A number of folks have asked how to build a bootable CD. Sandy - with help from Harry Motin - is going to show us how it's done. They are going to use Hayo Baan's bootAble and RSJ CD-Writer. For those that prefer the command line, Steven Levine is going to follow up with how to use bootAble with mkisofs and cdrecord. Finally, the Programming SIG is going to finish up with the "Introduction to PM Programming" that was originally scheduled for last month. Like most software related projects, it did not happen as scheduled. Perhaps the planned development system of the future will help us avoid this in the future. Got questions? SCOUG has answers! Our Q&A session at each meeting gives you a great opportunity to work the kinks out of your systems. As always donuts and coffee will be there. You should come too. See you on Saturday. It features an extensive range of functions and options with full command-line access. New in this release: - Lines displayed on the console device are now clipped to fit the text screen width. - SocketMonitor now sends its output to the standard output device rather than the standard error device. - Bugfix: Text content in multipart/alternative messages was not displayed if the alternative was text/enriched.
