2006-04-24 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Andy Willis Warpstock Corporation is pleased to announce that the new webpages are now online <http://www.warpstock.org>. The new content management system will allow more timely updates. To celebrate the new homepage we would like to announce a new contest: Warpstock Corporation is looking to create a corporate logo. The Warpstock board has decided to have a contest for the creation of the new logo. The submission rules are fairly simple: 1. It should contain the name Warpstock Corporation 2. It should have the URL http://www.warpstock.org 3 It should have at least a band of "IBM Blue" (one idea was to have the name and/or URL in blue but this is not required) 4. There should be 4 sizes: A. Icon size (which does not have the URL and not necessarily the name) B. Small C. Medium D. Large 5. There should be 256 color, 4 color, and B&W versions of each size. 6. For the Small, Medium, and Large it would be a good idea to have them in a raster format (such as eps) for scalability. Definition of Small and Medium are not strictly set but we envision using the logo for webpages, flyers, posters, cups, shirts, etc. The Large would be poster board size. The small, medium, and large should be similar but do not have to be exact. For instance, the large may have more in it than the others. The winner of the contest shall receive a free registration to Warpstock 2006 and a custom made shirt with the official logo embroidered upon it presented to him (or her) at the Warpstock banquet. Submissions are due by June 1st 2006. Please make submissions to logo-submissions@warpstock.org Warpstock, Corp., is a Virginia corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock web site: http://www.warpstock.org Top
2006-04-24 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Jan van Wijk First of all, a big 'thank you' to the OS/2 community for voting DFSee as best commercial software of 2005! http://www.os2world.com/award/results.php Then, in case anyone missed it, version 8 is available as a CDROM offering as well, with a nice updated label. Just as a reminder, anyone who bought a DFSee product after 1st of March in 2006, is considered a regular DFSee 8.xx user (you have the 8.xx key :-) So you also have the right to buy the: 'Bootable CDROM for registered 8.xx users' Which is just 10 Euros ($13) plus shipping, available from the Mensys webshop at: http://shop.mensys.nl/dfsee Since the CDROM's are burnt on demand now, the CDROM will not only contain your unique (email-address) registration info in the code, but printed on the CDROM as well ... (see link to sample cdlabel below) Of course, if you have the right hard and software, you can also burn your own CDROM, and add your 8.xx key to that using the tool provided with the ISO: http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsee8xx_ISO.zip And to make it a good-looking one, also get the labels and print one directly on the CDROM (or CD sticker). 2006-04-24 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul smedley Hi All, Firstly, let me express a THANK YOU to all the people who obviously voted for me in this year's OS/2 World Awards, resulting in me taking out the 'Honor Award for Individuals'. I really appreciate the messages of support and feedback on the ports I've done (and the occasional sponsorship) - without feedback, developers can lose interest, so it really is important! Anyway, a few updates to the ports page http://smedley.info/os2ports.html : - Subversion v1.3.1 beta 2 - updated form 1.3.0 to 1.3.1 and fixed a problem with 'svn add'. The goal of the Subversion project is to build a version control system that is a compelling replacement for CVS in the open source community. - PHP 5.1.2 beta 5 - major update is the use of the MySQL client from MySQL v5.0.19. Also some fixes that I'd made for 4.4.2 are now included in 5.1.2. PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML - cURL v7.15.3 - updated to latest version. curl is a command line tool for transferring files with URL syntax, supporting FTP, FTPS, TFTP, HTTP, HTTPS, TELNET, DICT, FILE and LDAP. curl supports HTTPS certificates, HTTP POST, HTTP PUT, FTP uploading, HTTP form based upload, proxies, cookies, user+password authentication (Basic, Digest, NTLM, Negotiate, kerberos...), file transfer resume, proxy tunneling and a busload of other useful tricks. Cheers, Paul. Top

2006-04-24 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel As has been noted in a couple of the posts already sent today, OS/2 World has announced the results of their 2006 awards ( http://www.os2world.com/award/results.php ), and the VOICE website was voted "Best Site of the Year". VOICE has never been one to trumpet their own accomplishments, but I thought it was appropriate to take this time to point out the work of a few of the folks that have put a lot of their personal time into the project and helped make it one of the few remaining active on-line resources for the OS/2 and eComStation community. First off Ken Kirchner who is the VOICE server admin, web master and all around great guy. He has taken some suggestions from myself and others and implemented them on the web site to make it the useful, always up-to-date site it is today. His talent and knowledge is what has brought about those features which make the site so useful, like the new hobbes files listing, the archived article search feature ( http://www.os2voice.org/searchnl.html ) and the automatically updated news listings on the main page. He's also been a great help with the Warpstock web site (also hosted on the VOICE server) with things like mail and online polls. I'd like to personally thank all the people who over the many years have submitted announcements to the VOICE mailing list which helps keep OS/2 and eComStation users informed without having to spend a lot of time hunting down this information on their own. If you have news related to OS/2 and eComStation please email it to submit@os2voice.org or use the online submission form at http://www.os2voice.org/fSubNews.html Next Christian Hennecke who stepped in as the editor-in-chief of the VOICE Newsletter a couple years ago and has modernized it into a truly attractive and yet still useful information source despite some tough times getting new content and help translating in our ever shrinking community of users and developers. The newsletter has come a long way since it first appeared 9 years ago as a brief four pages of HTML (and that damn INF version ;-) with some news and information about VOICE and OS/2. Finally to the writers, translators and editors who continue to work on the newsletter so folks have something new to read every month or so. Without these people there would be no VOICE Newsletter. If you haven't done so yet please consider contributing an article for a future edition. There is a very well written guideline for submission of articles that you should definitely look over for hints on what to write about and how to present it: http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0206H/guide.html Mark Top
2006-04-24 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: "Sander Nyman"<2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net> Mozilla's Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 for OS/2 & eCS has been released. Thunderbird is Mozilla's full-featured email, RSS and newsgroup client. This is a security and stability update. This release contains 62 bug fixes since the 1.5 version. It also contains 15 security fixes, 2 of which are rated critical, so updating to 1.5.0.2 is highly recommended. As was the case with Firefox, Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 is an immense improvement over it's 1.0.x predecessors. You can download it here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/1.5.0.2/contrib/thunderbird-1.5.0.2.en-US.os2.zip IMPORTANT NOTE: This release requires C runtime DLLs from Innotek. The latest version is 0.5.1, which includes an installer. Available here: http://download.innotek.de/gccos2/runtime/libc-0.5.1.exe IMPORTANT NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same time (or ANY other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level, or a mismatched DLL from an older version will still be in memory when you attempt to start a second Mozilla based program. The easiest way to use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, NVU, etc., is with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set up. To make life even easier, I HIGHLY recommend that you download & use the Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with coordinating your web brower with your email client for "mailto" links, etc. You can find it here: http://www.7cities.net/%7Emckinnis/code/iai1010.exe Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/run_060.zip Thunderbird extensions (add-ons) that add new functionality are available here: https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=thunderbird Thunderbird themes (skins) are available here: https://addons.update.mozilla.org/themes/?application=thunderbird A utility to migrate mail from PMMail to Thunderbird is available here: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/mail/reader/pmm_tbird.zip For more information on the Thunderbird e-mail and newsgroup client: http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/ For a list of what's new in this release: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/releases/1.5.0.2.html Tips and tricks for Thunderbird can be found here: http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/tips If you have questions, or just want the latest, greatest tips for Firefox, Thunderbird, & Mozilla (Seamonkey), Steve Wendt's excellent "Tips For Warpzilla" page can be found here: http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/Warpzilla.html And finally, if you still have questions, or just want to participate in a Mozilla for OS/2 discussion forum, the Warpzilla newsgroup can be found here: news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2 Regards, Sander Nyman Top

2006-04-26 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel Doodle has released a new OS/2 drop of the Cairo Graphics library on the Netlabs ftp server. http://www.cairographics.org/introduction (Caution site may load extremely slowly) "Cairo is a 2D graphics library with support for multiple output devices. Currently supported output targets include the X Window System, win32, and image buffers. Experimental backends include OpenGL (through glitz), Quartz, XCB, PostScript and PDF file output. Cairo is designed to produce consistent output on all output media while taking advantage of display hardware acceleration when available (eg. through the X Render Extension). The cairo API provides operations similar to the drawing operators of PostScript and PDF. Operations in cairo including stroking and filling cubic Bézier splines, transforming and compositing translucent images, and antialiased text rendering. All drawing operations can be transformed by any affine transformation (scale, rotation, shear, etc.) Cairo is implemented as a library written in the C programming language, but bindings are available for several different programming languages. Cairo is free software and is available to be redistributed and/or modified under the terms of either the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2.1 or the Mozilla Public License (MPL) version 1.1. It features an extensive range of functions and options with full command-line access. New in release 20060428.085111: - This release introduces the concept of Addressless Carbon Copy, together with a new header keyword, ACC. (Thank you, Aland, for the suggestion.) ACC can be used to send messages to multiple recipients without revealing their e-mail addresses, while still displaying a list of their names (or whatever comments you care to specify). - Added the HEAD message redirection recipe keyword to enable a recipe value to be matched to any header entry. - The RexxComm.CMD program is now included in the RexxMail distribution package. 2006-04-30 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Dale Erwin Brutus is the name of my software project to catalog my collections of recordings and other similar stuff. I am about ready to release this program, which is written in Java. If any of you would like to try it out, I would be very interested in any comments or suggestions you might like to make. I originally started out to catalog my collection of MP3 files on my hard drive, but I also wanted to catalog the CDs in my Sony CD player which has a 200 CD carousel. I have since added a few other things to catalog. It now catalogs 6 different entities: Albums, Books, Movies, Operas, Scores and Software. The only thing left to do before the first release is to write the help files and have them translated... Oh, yes, did I forget to mention that it supports four different languages: German, English, Spanish and Italian. When the database is first initialized, it loads the English into the database, but this can be easily changed once the app is running by clicking on the Options menu -> Languages -> xxxxx (where xxxxx is the language of your choice). However, if anyone would be interested in trying it out without the help system in place, you can download it from my website: http://www.casaerwin.com The site is in Spanish, but on the second (last) row of images, third from the left, second from the right, there is an image of BRUTUS SOFTWARE. Click on this image and you will be taken to the Brutus page. Click on DESCARGAR to download the zip file. If you click on the next line down " Instrucciones -- por ahora solo en inglés " you will see the instructions which for now are only in English. These instructions are very basic, and for now are the only help available... except you can always ask me. Top
