2006-12-30 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel There hasn't been any announcements since Christmas so I thought I'd throw one out so people know the list is still alive. If anyone has anything to announce they need to send it to submitDESPAM@DESPAMos2voice.org (Remove the DESPAM before sending). Now is a great time to make any announcements. :-) Please keep announcements related to OS/2-eComStation and include a brief description and appropriate links. All sender emails are obfuscated, but if you really don't want your email address listed just ask but we need a valid name so we know who is sending the post. Since people are still frequently looking for the old beta drivers for the few working wireless 802.11b PCMCIA cards, I have uploaded what I have to the VOICE FTP server. These are not the drivers released by IBM on Software Choice for the IBM High Rate PCMCIA card and the IBM Prism based Mini-PCI cards in Thinkpads. You must have an eComStation license to access those drivers or access to the soon to be closed IBM Software Choice site. These are drivers which were crafted a few years ago but never made it out of Beta stage and were never released. The Cisco 340/350 PCMCIA card driver can be downloaded at ftp://os2voice.org/CiscoPCM.0.91.A502.zip. This works well with both the Csico 340 and Cisco 350 PCMCIA cards that I have used it with. According to the readme no encryption was working with this release. You can use the included wifistat.exe or Christian Langanke's excellent WLAN Monitor (Available as an XCenter Widget and standalone program, Wireless LAN hardware & driver req. English, German and Swedish NLS. Homepage: http://wlan.netlabs.org) The GenPrism driver can be downloaded at ftp://os2voice.org/genprism.2.0rc4.zip This driver should work with many Prism chipset based PCMCIA cards like the Lucent Gold PCMCIA card or so I was told as I have never had one to test it with. This is just the driver files since it was a beta update for testing purposes. To configure the connection you need either the wifistat.exe that comes with one of the released versions or the Cisco350 version also on the VOICE FTP server ftp://os2voice.org/CiscoPCM.0.91.A502.zip or the WLAN utility available from Netlabs - ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/wlan/xwlan300.zip To my knowledge both of these were the last betas released by the developer who has since disappeared so there is no support available. If you have a newer Cardbus or Mini-PCI wireless card you should try Willibald Meyer's GenMac 2.00 driver http://genmac.netlabs.org/ . There is an article I wrote on my experience with the 1.7 release of GenMac at http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0606H/feature_4.html For more information on wireless networking under eComStation and OS/2 check out the following forums: OS2Wireless mailing list: http://mail.2rosenthals.com:8100/Lists/os2-wireless_users/List.html or to subscribe (new addresses), E-mail to: os2-wireless_users-onDESPAM@DESPAM2rosenthals.com and reply to the confirmation email. 2006-12-31 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel Since I mentioned yesterday that I had been looking for a copy of the old EWS PMCamera app which I found a copy on our own VOICE FTP server, Karl Steinsky sent me a newer version of PMCamera (version 2.12), dating from July 1995. The version originally in the VOICE FTP EWS archive was 2.08. If anyone is interested in this screen capture utility it can be downloaded at ftp://os2voice.org/EWS/PMCamera212.zip Thanks to Karl for the updated version. If anyone has any other updated versions of EWS software please send them to me so I can update the VOICE FTP server. Mark Top
2006-12-31 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel Happy New Year to everyone. Its 2007 (At least for some of our readership) and we are still able to buy and use our favorite computer operating system thanks to Serenity Systems, if we choose to. :-) VOICE begins its 11th year of existence and the News list has been around since May 7,1997 as well. A lot has changed in that time, but it seems there are still a few people interested in using OS/2 and its latest incarnation eComStation. Hopefully 2007 continues to bring new items of interest. Just a reminder if you are posting to the VOICE News list, please either use the web form on http://www.os2voice.org/fSubNews.html or directly via email to submitDESPAM@DESPAMos2voice.org Sending a post directly to one of the moderators may result in it being delayed or lost. Any email sent to the feedback address only goes to the moderators, so if you have a question about a post please make sure you send a copy to the original poster. As always if you are submitting an announcement try to make it as brief as possible, but with basic information like a description of the item and a URL where more information can be found as well as a URL where it can be downloaded if it is software. Also if its an update please list what has been changed if you know it. Please also give complete identity of the sender as well as a contact address. We will do our best to obscure that, but readers may need to contact you. If you are a developer don't just upload your work to hobbes or your own web site and forget it. Write a short announcement and send it to VOICE so the OS/2-eComStation community can know what you have done and what the software is capable of doing. If so please send out an announcement so people know what you have worked on. I can only hunt down so much information on my own and it would be a really big help if people would send in announcements. A big thank you to Peter Koller, Paul Smedley, Jan van Wijk, and Marcus de Geus among others who have sent in frequent and complete announcements. Posting the announcement on comp.os.os2.announce would be helpful as well since some people still read the OS/2 Usenet groups even if they don't post because of all the attacks from the psycho-trolls (Though it seems at least some of these nutcases have moved on to other pastures to torture people). As to the list itself, we start the year with 665 subscribers. That is about 60 fewer than a year ago. Currently there are very few rejections and all are of a temporary nature. The VOICE News list is currently still mirrored on the OS/2 Info Yahoo list http://groups.yahoo.com/group/os2info/?yguid=835823 with another 146 subscribers, as well as the OS/2 News service - http://www.os2news.com which is used as a news feed for some other web sites. Hopefully we will see more from os2news.com in the future. Thanks for reading and I hope you continue to find our announcements of interest. Mark Top
