2007-03-25 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel http://www.vintage.org/ The 4th annual Vintage Computer Festival East is being held on Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10, 2007, at the InfoAge Learning Center in Wall Township, New Jersey. This is the location where the OS/2 Museum items displayed at the previous couple of Warpstock events in North America are being housed. The building housing the computer museum is not yet fully restored, but there are some small displays of older computers in the main lobby. At the event itself there will be examples of micro, mini and even mainframe computers from the past. Last year I had an OS/2 timeline table with some of the vintage OS/2 machines on display. I wrote an article on my VCFE experience in the VOICE Newsletter http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0706H/feature_2.html The exhibit won a second place award in the micro-computer category. It was really a fun time and there were quite a few attendees who talked to me about their OS/2 experiences. This year unfortunately I will be away the weekend of VCFE. So if there is anyone that would like to exhibit please let me know or you can contact VCFE directly off of the website - http://www.vintage.org/2007/east/exhibit.php Top

2007-03-28 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Thorolf Godawa Hi all, right now we have a big problem with eCS on newer devices like the ThinkPad T60 that now uses MiniPCI/PCI-express (MiniPCIe/PCIe) to attach network adapters! GenMAC does not yet support any of the new MiniPCIe-adapters because Willibald, the developer of GenMAC, has no hardware to debug the driver! He got two Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 MiniPCIe and an adapter for his PC from PCIe to MiniPCIe but unfortunately this is not working because the behavior is not the same like in a laptop with MiniPCIe :-( So my idea is to donate him a laptop with MiniPCI/PCI-express plus a port-replicator with serial port that in future he also can develop and debug drivers for new ethernet- and WLAN-cards based on MiniPCIe! Because they are still the best, and a lot people who are using eCS do have this type, I would recommend a ThinkPad T60 with ThinkPad Essential Port Replicator. The smallest model that would meet the requirements and the port replicator you get in Germany for 1300 - 1400EUR including taxes as new item with 3 year warranty. Alternatively s.b. in Germany can borrow him an ThinkPad T60 and a port replicator for some weeks that at least he can fix the 8086x109A and 8086x4222/4227, but for further development we will get the same problems we have now. So who is willing to donate some money that we can buy such a system for him? Please write me an E-Mail to "genmac borrow a device or how much you obligatory would like to donate! I will coordinate everything, if the promised amount of donation comes near what we need I will collect the money, I will get the cheapest model that meets all requirements and send it to Willibald. If we collected too much money I will donate the rest to Netlabs.org! I don't know yet how to collect the money the best way from outside EU, any suggestions are welcome! In Germany and the EU the easiest and cheapest way is a banktransfer, in the US my aunt is living so maybe this also could be a way to get "cheap" money from there - or we make a Netlabs.org-sponsoring over Mensys especially for this project ... @Bob/Roderick/Joachim: Is Serenity/Mensys able/willing to donate too? You are also participating from GenMAC for eCS, so it would be nice to get s.th. from there too! Thanks a lot, Top
2007-03-30 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel This is completely off topic for this list, for which I apologize and I am in no way promoting Apple. Though I now have three of these Mac beasts in my home, I am not a fan of Mac OSX and I still use only eCS for most of my daily computing. I really thought it was funny to read that every major computer maker saw a dip or flattened sales during the period following the release of windows vista, except for Apple. Maybe people are beginning to wise up. http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2617 "Apple thrives under Vista onslaught, steady on iPods By Aidan Malley Published: 12:00 AM EST An expert at Morgan Stanley has reasoned that of all the major computer makers in play during the release of Windows Vista, the only one to avoid taking a hit in sales was the one company that chose not to run the software at all: Apple."
