2007-08-17
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Eugene Gorbunoff

New generation of ACPI sub-system is available.
eComStation supports suspend/resume on multi-core notebooks and barebones now.
FAQs are published at ACPI tools homepage -- http://ecomstation.ru/acpitools

[Moderator note:
"ACPI (short for "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface") is a
standard that defines power and configuration management interfaces
between an operating system and Hardware. It is meant to supersede
the older APM standard (for power management) and provide a generic
interface for recognition and configuration of hardware devices."

Available to those with access (via Software Subscription Services) to the
eComStation BetaZone: ( via logging in at http://www.mensys.nl ) ]

How to setup sleep/resume? (APM.doc)
* Use Panorama VESA video driver
* Goto BIOS Setup, Enable "Init video after S3". If no such option then
ACPI.PSD should try to perform this operation. Add ACPI.PSD /VBE to
init video BIOS after resume. (there are no guarantees that this will work)
* Edit acpid.cfg, suspend should be: suspend=S3 * How to suspend? Open
Power object -> Suspend * How to resume after sleep? Press Power button.

How to achieve success in testing?
* update danis506.add to 1.8.1 (How to update Danis -- Software updates
-- http://ecomstation.ru/apecs.php?action=item&id=203
* disable all device drivers before testing suspend/resume (USB, audio,
network)
* You can see the list of Sleep states supported by your computer when
starting ACPI daemon (S1 - computer is stopped; S2 - computer is stopped,
part of devices are powered off; S3 - all devices are powered off, except
memory; S4 - all devices are powered off; S5 - power off)
* Post the report to the tracker -- http://svn.netlabs.org/acpi/newticket

How to help to other users? Share the results of your tests.

Step 1: Post report about your computer/motherboard to --
http://ecomstation.ru/hardware.php

Step 2: If you have installed eCS 2.0 RC1 or higher then
Goto http://www.ecomstation.com/support/rc1report/
Please include the \var\log\instlog.zip file, this contains all of your
configured settings, as well as a small overview of the hardware. This
makes it easier for us to identify supported (or unsupported) hardware.

Install ACPIFU WPI (Fast Upgrade) if 3.0 is working fine on your computer.

ACPI 3.01, what's new:

ACPI.PSD
* fix SpeedStep&Throttling for Uni kernel and MADT absent in acpi table
* expand LAPIC ESR handling
* fix memory heap
* add duration of HLT

APM.ADD:
* rebuild ACPI_STATE_S1
* fix going to absent state
* optimize throttling setting

SW: Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (Official) Has Been Released

2007-08-17
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

Michael Kaply has released Mozilla's Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (Official) for
OS/2. Thunderbird 2.x is Mozilla's next generation, state of the art,
full-featured email, RSS and newsgroup client. It is OPEN SOURCE, and
free. This release is a security update. It fixes 2 vulnerabilities, one
of which is rated critical: MFSA 2007-27 Unescaped URIs passed to external
programs.

You can download it here:

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/2.0.0.6/contrib/thunderbird-2.0.0.6.en-US.os2.zip

NOTE: In the unlikely event that you don't already have it, this release
requires the C runtime DLLs (libc-0.5.1) from Innotek. Version 0.5.1
includes an installer. Available here:

http://download.innotek.de/gccos2/runtime/libc-0.5.1.exe

NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same time (or ANY
other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level, or a
mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a second
Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this limitation, and
use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, Kompozer, etc., is
with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set up. To
make life even easier, I recommend that you download & use the Internet
Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which actually
contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with coordinating
your web browser with your email client for "mailto" links, etc. You can
find it here:

http://7cities.net/~mckinnis/code/iai1050.exe

Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/run_060.zip

Thunderbird extensions (add-ons) that add additional functionality are
available here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/browse/type:1

Thunderbird themes (skins) are available here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/browse/type:2

A utility to migrate mail from PMMail to Thunderbird is available here:

SW: Mr. Message (AIM client) update 8/11/2007

2007-08-17
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Marty Amodeo

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of
communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR protocol
(used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, gAIM, Kopete, ICQ, and a variety of
other clients).

It has been updated with the following changes:
* Fixed the login process again, making it more robust and tolerant
against receiving unexpected data. Should be reliable now.
* Fixed a memory leak when a session record is deleted.
* Fixed a memory leak when the Buddy List is created if an empty
buddy group is found on the server.
* Fixed the corruption of session settings when a session that used
global settings is changed to have unique settings.
* Added tolerance for handling messages with NULL characters embedded
in them, like some DBCS messages will require. I don't know if this
support is adequate to support character set translations because I
have had no testers for this. Let me know if something needs
improvement.

To download, please visit the official Mr. Message web page:

Event: Warpstock Europe 2007 Announcement

2007-08-17
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Christian Hennecke

The Warpstock Europe Event Team is pleased to announce that WARPSTOCK
EUROPE 2007 will be held at the Stayokay Valkenswaard hostel, the
Netherlands on November 2-4, 2007. For more information, visit the
Warpstock Europe web site at:

http://www.warpstock.eu

Warpstock is an annual conference for the OS/2 and eComStation operating
systems and related technology. It is dedicated to information, education,
support, and exchange and addresses users, developers, and software
vendors. To achieve these goals, the event offers seminars and workshops,
exhibition areas, and room for personal exchange.

Warpstock conferences are held in different parts of the world. the
originating event is targeted at the users of the United States of America
and Canada, while the Warpstock Europe event obviously is its European
counterpart. Also, there is the Warpstock Czech Repuplic, which dedicated
to the community within the Czech Republic and countries of Eastern Europe.

OS/2 and eComStation users from Europe--and anywhere else for that
matter--are invited to come to the Netherlands this year to attend
Warpstock Europe 2007. Even though the organization of the event is still
in its early stages, the Event Team already has many ideas on what to offer
during this three day OS/2-fest.

Warpstock Europe 2007 will be an excellent opportunity to attend
high-quality presentations about a variety of OS/2- and eComStation-related
subjects, exchange ideas with other developers, meet the people behind
projects, get support from user groups, and talk to other users.

Located in the heart of Western Europe near the Belgium border,
Valkenswaard is at a convenient travelling distance for people coming from
the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and France. Attendees flying
in from other countries will arrive at Eindhoven International Airport,
which is only 18 km away from the event location. The distance to the
railway station in Eindhoven is under 11 km. Public transport to the event
location is available.

The spacious Stayokay hostel has been designed for comfort and utility, and
has a capacity of 150 beds. Four conference rooms will host sessions,
workshops, and the exhibition area, while a restaurant takes care of the
physical well-being. In the evening, visitors can mingle in the bar.
Located in a wooded area, the hostel offers all kinds of recreational
facilities from table tennis to cycling trails. Together with a range of
cultural offerings that includes several museums, this is a great
opportunity for everybody who wants to extend his visit beyond the duration
of the event itself.

Behind the organisation of Warpstock Europe 2007 is an international group
of OS/2 users, lead by Event Team Chairman Keith Merrington. This year also
marks a new beginning as this event is the first to benefit from the
support of warpevents.eu, an organisation with the goal of enabling others
to create OS/2-related events by providing information about event
organisation, a communication and coordination center, and the means for
running event web sites as well.

SW: WGet/2 version 1.10+devel (revision 2336) available

2007-08-18
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Andreas

Hi,

I finally uploaded my build of GNU WGet for OS/2 and eComStation.

http://Andreas-Ludwig.info/index.php?page=wget-2

"GNU Wget is a free software package for retrieving files using HTTP, HTTPS
and FTP, the most widely-used Internet protocols. It is a non-interactive
commandline tool, so it may easily be called from scripts, other command
line tools, etc"

The port is based on the latest source from WGet subversion and was built
using Paul Smedley's GCC build environment (needs libc063.dll available
from ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0_6_3-csd3.wpi )

The main new feature of 1.10+ (revision 2336) over 1.10.2 is support for
handling headers of the form 'Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename="somefile.xyz" '. I use WGet daily to download files from a site
that uses this feature (Save.tv) and file names work perfectly well now
(except for the usual OS/2 codepage issues).

Have fun!

IBM USB Audio driver supports old devices:
* Labtec LCS-1040 (speaker only)
* Altec ADA-70 (speaker only)
* TELEX H-531 (microphone only)

SW: enigmail-0.95.3 for OS/2

2007-08-20
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Walter Meinl

Hi,
I've compiled the new version of enigmail, you can get it from the
http://enigmail.mozdev.org site. There are no new features for us that I'm
aware. However, it was a test for me, if it compiles cleanly after several
OS/2 fixes were checked in between 0.95.2. Therefore, I want to encourage
every enigmail user to download and install the new version. For Seamonkey
users, please uninstall the old version exit Seamonkey and manually delete
Seamonkey\components\enigmime.dll before you install the new version. There
is no automatic way to delete this dll as it is loaded at runtime by seamonkey.

A further thing I would be interested in is that I want to compile in the
future only with gcc-3.3.5, if (and only if) there are no errors for users
of "official" Thunderbird-2.0.x or Seamonkey-1.1.x versions. I don't see a
problem, but as the official versions are compiled with gcc-3.3.2 and use
libc-0.51, there may be problems. So, users of official builds please test
also the enigmail version compiled against libc-0.6.3 (you have to download
it from ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc ) and test it if it works. Any OS/2
related problems to post here, please. For engimail related probs (not
OS/2) there is also a well frequented mailing list you can post to.

Thanks and have fun

Walter

Mozilla Seamonkey which allows users to access the authentication and
encryption features provided by GnuPG (see screenshots).

SW: z! 2.8aug08.

2007-08-21
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

A new release by Dink of z1, the VIO MP3 player for OS/2. Also plays OGG
Vorbis ( requires plugin files from
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/sound/convert/oggvorbis-1.0.1-os2.zip
) and streaming MP3. Can be used as a web browser helper app for playing
MP3s or standalone to search for streaming MP3s. See main web site:
http://dink.org/z/

Changes listed in message posted by Dink on the z! message board:
http://dink.org/z/zmsgboard.html?read=H8O1V5W6N0

Hi everyone, heres the long-awaited new version of z!

whats new:
x new: 5-star song-rating function; press + or - in the lister or while a
track is playing to rate it.
x new: play now / play next / add to end of playlist icons added for each
track via the built-in webserver
x new: auto-update current track/next/previous/connected users/etc via
the built-in webserver
x new: option to specify a password for streaming audio
x fix: wrong time (current and total) on tracks with an image embedded in
them
x fix: win32 only - crash shortly after a track with embedded image
starts playing, thanks to fusion for supplying the mp3 for testing
x fix: save the data in the streaming buffers as well as the incoming
data with 'w'rite stream to disk
x workaround: sometimes if another stream/song gets played in a separate
copy of z! while one is already playing or paused - due to a bug in MMOS2,
the f first z! will "inherit" the volume level from the newly spawned z!
x new: streaming function can be disabled completely by specifying a port
of 0
x some other minor things I forgot about..
[edit aug.21/forgot to mention]
x new: track sorting in the web interface, click the Filename/Size/Last
Modified headings

Event: Announcing the OS/2 and eComStation Developers Workshop 2008

2007-08-22
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Netlabs Team

Today, Team OS/2 Ruhr e.V. and netlabs.org are announcing the OS/2 and
eComStation Developers Workshop 2008!

Yes, you heard right, 2008! We are very happy to be able to announce the
next gathering of OS/2 and eComStation developers more than 8 months in
advance.

The OS/2 and eComStation Developers Workshop 2008 will be held in the city
of Duesseldorf, Germany, on the weekend of 3rd and 4th May 2008. It follows
the tradition of organizing an event for developers once every year. The
last workshop was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and in 2006 the
workshop was held in Biel, Switzerland. The first workshop was held in 2005
in Dresden, Germany.

The netlabs.org Developers Workshop once again is the hotspot and place to
be to get all the latest news from and insights into the development
community for the OS/2 and eComStation platform as well as for the Voyager
Project, intending to build a successor to the current eComStation product.

This years workshop will be held in the City Youth Hostel of the city of
Duesseldorf, Germany. This Hostel is located right to the Rhine, and
opposite of the famous old town of Duesseldorf. Be prepared for a
spectacular sight onto the Rhine from our conference room!

If you are developing software for OS/2 or eComStation and want to
participate in the workshop, please visit the workshop homepage and send an
email to the dws2008_despam_@_despam_teamruhr.de.

This event is a great gathering and is being organized for the fourth time
now by volunteers. We try to keep costs as low as possible and we would
like to ask you to register as early as possible, so that we can provide
appropriate room for all of us in the Youth Hostel. While students don't
need to pay, they are required to register, speakers do neither need to pay
nor register. Tickets can be purchased through the Mensys Online shop
starting September 2007!

SW: PMMail 3.0 Beta 2 is available for download

2007-08-22
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Neil Waldhauer

Hi, patient users. (and others)

I'm pleased to announce the release of PMMail 3.0 beta 2.

PMMail has been a favorite email client of many OS/2-eCS users for quite
some time. As the product appeared to be falling into a state of
"maintenance mode" several members of VOICE began to enquire as to the
possibility of purchasing the rights to the source code to renew development.

The result of this was that the members of VOICE voted to purchase the
source for development. PMMail/2 is free to all VOICE members who were
paid-up members as of December 31, 2006. The sale of PMMail/2 to others
will involve VOICE membership plus $25. At this point no outside sales are
intended. PMMail/2 sales will commence with the GA of version 3.

http://pmmail.os2voice.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

You'll need to have a valid VOICE username and password to get the beta.

Have fun, and use the bugtracker to let us know how it goes.

You can bookmark the above page -- future releases will be there, too.

SW: UClip, enhanced OS/2 clipboard support

2007-08-23
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Yuri Dario

UClip is designed to allow OS/2 programs to exchange unicode text using the
clipboard with other native programs or with odin-ized programs.
It is compiled using Odin source code, so it shares the same clipboard
formats recognized in win32 native programs.

Note: UClip will not enable your existing OS/2 software, it will work only
for programs specifically developed with it.
The SDK package is not for end users, it is only for developers.

Softwares known to use it: OpenOffice 2.x, Lucide.

UClip 0.3.0 is available for download from Hobbes:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=UClip

Additional requirements:
* libc 0.6.3 runtime

SW: ClamAV 0.91.2 available

2007-08-23
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Yuri Dario

Clam AntiVirus∞ is a GPL anti-virus toolkit for UNIX (and OS/2). The
main purpose of this software is the integration with mail servers
(attachment scanning). The package provides a flexible and scalable
multi-threaded daemon, a command line scanner, and a tool for automatic
updating via Internet. The programs are based on a shared library
distributed with the Clam AntiVirus package, which you can use with your
own software. Most importantly, the virus database is kept up to date. A
multithread plugin for InetPowerServer is available, ask for details (not
free software).

Latest build for OS/2 is version 0.91.2, and is available for download from
Hobbes:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=clamav

Additional requirements:
* libc 0.6.3 runtime
* libc pathrewriter
