SW: InstPDR 2007_06_14 on eCS BetaZone

2007-06-17
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

Alex Taylor has released InstPDR version: 2007_06_14 on the eCS Betazone
available to any registered eCS owner.

instpdr_20070614.zip 55 kb 16/06/2007 04:28 am
InstPDR is a GUI tool for installing new printer drivers. Includes a
graphical frontend for importing PPD files.

From the readme.1st:

"INSTPDR - Add Printer Drivers
Release 2007-08-14

InstPDR is a GUI utility for upgrading or importing new printer drivers.

WHAT IT DOES

1. Allows you to upgrade (or downgrade) the PSCRIPT, LASERJET, OMNI or
PLOTTERS PrinterPak drivers in the local repository of installable
printer drivers.

2. Allows you to imports PPD files to create new PostScript printer drivers
(basically providing an easy-to-use GUI for PIN, while helping to avoid
some of the associated pitfalls).

It also (re)creates the local repository in both cases if it doesn't exist."

SW: eComStation 2.0 RC1 available

2007-06-18
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Joachim Benjamins

Serenity Systems International and Mensys BV are pleased to announce the
immediate availability of eComStation 2.0 RC1.

This release is available to customers with an active Software
Subscriptions Services subcription.

More details can be found at http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/

== BACKUP ==

As always, the following applies:

!!! WHEN TESTING BETA SOFTWARE, ALWAYS BE SURE TO HAVE A TRIED AND TESTED
BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM !!!

** Disk Resizer GUI **

This beta has a custom DFSee engine that enables reliable RESIZING of FAT32
and NTFS filesystems to allow shrinking an existing Windows installation to
make room for eComStation on the same system.

The GUI to this tool has been updated and is now using a graphical
interface. To invoke it, please select 'Paritition Resizing Tool' from the
Installation Volume Manager which can be called during installation.

** GenMac support **

This package provides generic driver support for several network interface
cards under OS/2 and eComStation. Moreover, Genmac is enabled to support
WPA encryption with the Wireless LAN Monitor 3.x or better.

Genmac and the Wireless LAN monitor will be installed when the appropriate
hardware is detected by the installer. If it is not detected, you can
manually select the driver in the network installation dialog.

** Bootable JFS **

This release of eComStation contains the option to install the operating
system on a JFS volume. The advantage of doing this is that the amount of
diskcache is only limited by system memory (typically 10% of available
memory is assigned) This increased cache size gives a huge gain in overall
system performance.

To install onto a Bootable JFS volume, you will have to select 'JFS' as
filesystem type in the 'Format Volume' page of the installer.

** ACPI 2.22 **

ACPI support has been updated to the latest available version (2.22) which
results in varying successrate. For example, AMD Opteron multicore CPU is
now reported to be supported.

Installation of ACPI has been improved by the use of the ACPI Wizard,
which tries to determine system configuration and set parameters
accordingly. You can manually change them of course.
It will be run after regular installation has completed.

** multicore CPU support **

This beta supports the installation of eComStation on a MultiCore CPU
computer. This includes Intel Core Duo, Core2 Duo and AMD 64 X2.
To enable it, you can do so in the ACPI Wizard that is launched from the
Post Installation tasks at the end of the installation. Alternatively you
can start the ACPI Wizard at any time from the install/remove folder in the
Local System folder on the desktop.

** eComStation Virtual File System (Samba client support) **

Samba is a SMB/CIFS protocols file and print sharing server/client set
originally made for UNIX world to cooperate with corresponding Windows and
OS/2 servers or clients. eComStation has a native implementation of
SMB/CIFS server/client set - IBM LAN Manager and IBM Peer. These products
have not been recently updated and may have some compatibility issues with
modern Windows SMB/CIFS implementations.

Serenity Systems International has reached an agreement with Blueprint
Software Works for the inclusion of the 'eComStation Virtual File System'
driver which provides support for Samba Client. Currently a GUI to
configure it is lacking, but an example of how to mount a Samba resource is
available.

== REPORTING ==

To tell us your findings, please create a report at:

http://www.ecomstation.com/support/rc1report/

You are also welcome to join the TestTeam if you want to discuss this beta
and future developments. See http://ewiki.ecomstation.nl/TestTeam for more
details.

== SOFTWARE SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES ==

Please note that although some subscriptions have expired by now, you are
not required to purchase a renewal to obtain the GA version of eComStation 2.0.

More details can be found at http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/

Enjoy!

SW: 'oo' - a WPS commandline tool

2007-06-19
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Rich Walsh

I'm pleased to announce the release of 'oo', a WPS commandline tool.

You can use 'oo' at the commandline or in scripts to: open, locate, and
list WPS objects, assign setup strings, popup their menus, get info, even
"drop" files on program objects.

Beside being more powerful than REXX functions like SysSetObjectData, 'oo'
is also more versatile: it can accept the path to any kind of object, not
just files or folders (eg program objects, shadows, etc).

You can get 'oo' from:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=oo100.zip
or
http://e-vertise.com/misc/oo100.zip

'oo' is freeware and is released under the Mozilla Public license. Refer to
'oo.txt' for a comprehensive description of its features; run it without
any parameters for a concise help screen.

SW: Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 (Official) Has Been Released

2007-06-19
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net>

Michael Kaply has released Mozilla's Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 (Official) for
OS/2. Thunderbird 2.x is Mozilla's next generation, state of the art,
full-featured email, RSS and newsgroup client. It is entirely OPEN SOURCE
and FREE! This release is mainly a security and stability update. It
contains 23 fixes, including 2 security fixes which are rated moderate. In
addition, Korean has been added to list of languages.

As was the case with Firefox, Thunderbird 2.x is an immense improvement
over it's 1.0 and 1.5 predecessors.

You can download it here:

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/2.0.0.4/contrib/thunderbird-2.0.0.4.en-US.os2.zip

NOTE: In the unlikely event that you don't already have it, this release
requires the C runtime DLLs (libc-0.5.1) from Innotek. Version 0.5.1
includes an installer. Available here:

http://download.innotek.de/gccos2/runtime/libc-0.5.1.exe

IMPORTANT NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same
time (or ANY other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level,
or a mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a
second Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this
limitation, and use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, NVU,
Kompozer, etc., is with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY
easy to set up. To make life even easier, I recommend that you download &
use the Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which
actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with
coordinating your web browser with your email client for "mailto" links,
etc. You can find it here:

http://www.7cities.net/%7Emckinnis/code/iai1050.exe

Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/run_060.zip

Thunderbird extensions (add-ons) that add additional functionality are
available here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/browse/type:1

Thunderbird themes (skins) are available here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/browse/type:2

A utility to migrate mail from PMMail to Thunderbird is available here:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/mail/reader/pmm_tbird.zip

For more information on the Thunderbird e-mail and newsgroup client:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

Thunderbird, & SeaMonkey, Steve Wendt's excellent "Tips For Warpzilla" page
can be found here:

SDL/2 package includes the following libraries: SDL 1.2.10, SDL_mixer

This package contains the latest SDL binaries and headers which can be used

SW: Correction: SDL/2 v1.2.10 20070618

2007-06-21
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Doodle

Hi Mark!

Just a short note for the latest os2voice news item you've submitted:

The following note is not true anymore:

"Please note that:

SDL uses the Scitech SNAP API to have video support, so the SDL apps will
require Scitech SNAP or Scitech Display Doctor in order to run."

This new release adds support for DIVE, so if SDL/2 does not find SNAP
(actually, it looks for sddhelp.sys) then it falls back to DIVE. It's a bit
slower in DIVE mode and does not support fullscreen modes then, but at
least it runs, so people without SNAP can use VirtualBox and other
SDL-based tools from now on.

Thanks for making the announcements!
