2007-07-15 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Dale Erwin Not too many people these days are very keen on Assembly Language as a viable development tool. When I was a mainframe programmer, specializing in 370 Assembler, I heard all the same arguments against it about how much more productive one could be in a high level language, but I never agreed with them. Don't you think anyone who could deliver a product that occupies 60MB as compared to an equivalent product developed in a high level language that occupies 600 MB, and in addition executed everything much faster that the bloated app, could be competitive? How many times have I heard people complain about how slow OOo and Mozilla apps are? I have created a new yahoo group for anyone who wants to collaborate on the problems of programming in Assembly Language under eCS and OS/2. I hope that anyone interested in learning to program in Assembly Language will join me in this group. It would also be greatly appreciated if anyone who has any experience in it would also join us to give us some insight. It's open to anyone who wants to join: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/eCS_asm/ Top
2007-07-15 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Peter Moylan After many unreleased beta versions, the new version of the Weasel mail server, version 1.77, is now available as a GA release. You can get it from <ftp://ftp.pmoylan.org/Weasel/weasel177.zip> or from Hobbes: <http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=weasel177.zip&pushbutton=Search> or you can go to the Weasel web page at <http://www.pmoylan.org/pages/os2/Weasel.html> which also gives you access to Weasel filters and tools. Weasel is a POP3 and SMTP mail server, and is optional shareware supporting a single mail domain. Registration of the "Pro" version lets you host multiple domains, and will also enable IMAP once a production version of the IMAP add-on is released. (The present version of the IMAP addon is not recommended for production work, because of a serious bug.) LIST OF CHANGES since version 1.76 Version 1.77 (15 Jul 2007) Fixed: failure to update user count when a client is banned or blacklisted. Fixed the "100% CPU" problem when a client connects but sends no command. "Extra logging" checkbox in Setup replaces X parameter. Improved protection against denial-of-service attack. Fixed: problem with authenticating outgoing mail. Fixed: logging via a pipe was failing. Now allowing for up to 8 blacklist servers. Added comment in the manual to point out that the Rexx variable RC can be checked to see whether Weasel shut down normally or crashed. Minor change to INIData.Close. Updated transaction logging to improve the case of multiple threads writing to disk. Fixed: memory corruption in INI file operations. Top
2007-07-15 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul smedley Hi All, I've updated the OS/2 & eComStation build of Gnash at my website at http://os2ports.smedley.info to reflect the latest cvs code as at 2007-07-13. For those that don't know what Gnash is, from http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash Gnash is a GNU Flash movie player. Previously, it was only possible to play flash movies with proprietary software. While there are some other free flash players, none support anything beyond SWF v4. Gnash is based on GameSWF, and supports many SWF v7 features. A plugin for Firefox is also planned when time permits. The OS/2 port of Gnash is the subject of an OS/2 World Bounty - see http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14712/1/ for more details. Enjoy! Paul. Top
