2007-10-24 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Roland Schmalenberg Hi folks, The day before yesterday the TYPO3-team released TYPO3 version 4.1.3 with some bugfixes mainly around the extensions HTMLArea and IRRE (Inline Relational Record Editing). During our time at Munich Sytems 2007 where we represent the well known "Voyager project" of netlabs.org I changed my script today, finished the tests and uploaded GetTYPO3v4forOS2 version 2.11. What is TYPO3? -------------- For those people not knowing TYPO3 yet it should be mentioned that TYPO3 is a free Open Source Web Content Management System, released under GPL. More informations can be found at http://typo3.com/ or for developers at http://typo3.org/ Where to get, what to need? --------------------------- You are able to download the script package from the home of "TYPO3 goes eComStation", http://os4you.org/typo3goesecomstation.html All you need to run is a working OAMP or AMP4eCS (OS/2+Apache+MySQL+PHP, WPI available from http://www.amp4ecs.de/ ), my package and time to study ;-) Hint for TYPO3-Beginners ------------------------ Those who want to use that CMS with OS/2 or eComStation the first time should start with reading our documentation (available in English, Dutch, French and German) for the TYPO3 version 3.8.x (outdated but still available) and examin the quickstart-package. All others will be recommended to use the latest versions ... Yours sincerly Roland Schmalenberg Team TYPO3 goes eComStation (TT3geCS) Top

The following from Mike Kaply: "Sorry, having major OS/2 build issues. when I tried to build it I got some weird failures and when I rebooted the machine, it wouldn't come up. When I get back in town next week I'm going to figure out what to do or get a new machine... " Regards, Sander Top
2007-10-24 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net> PM123 RC1 has been released. PM123 is an excellent open source PM based digital audio player for OS/2. It is capable of playing MP3's, WAV-files, Ogg Vorbis audio files, and audio CDs. 2007-10-25 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Walter Meinl Source: news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2 Thanks to the enimgail developers, they loaded up my new builds of the OS/2 libc05 (for official TB and SM builds) and libc063 (for Peter's enhanced builds) versions of enigmail-0.95.4 to http://enigmail.mozdev.org . For Seamonkey-1.1.x users please remember to uninstall first the old version, quit any instances of Seamonkey and delete enigmime.dll from the components subdir before you install the new version. There is a nice comprehensive up-to-date tutorial to be found here: http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14963/2/ Just a remark: in this article is a note that some users have problems with using enigmail under eCS-2.0rcx. However I could send an encrypted message to the enigmail devs containing the attached builds w/o problems with official TB-2.0.0.6 on eCS 2.0rc2. Comments are very welcomed. Happy encrypting Walter [Moderator note: From the Enigmail website: "The latest version of Enigmail is 0.95.4, working with Thunderbird 2.0 and Seamonkey 1.1 Enigmail is an extension to the mail client of Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla Seamonkey which allows users to access the authentication and encryption features provided by GnuPG (see screenshots). 2007-10-26 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Sellam Ismail [Moderator note: Though I don't see anything directly related to OS/2 in the exhibits listing, perhaps some folks in California might be interested in attending this event since it relates to older computers and many of us have been in the business for a long time and probably worked with some of this stuff. Perhaps you can even pickup some interesting OS/2 related items if anyone has any for sale there. It also might be good for someone to consider an OS/2 exhibit at a future event.] COMPUTER HISTORY PIONEERS CONGREGATE ON NOVEMBER 3-4 AT VINTAGE EVENT Vintage Computer Festival Celebrates History of Computing with live antique computers and living legends from the computer industry LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA (PRWEB) October 26, 2007 -- The Vintage Computer Festival, a yearly event that celebrates computers and their history, is being held on November 3-4 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Anticipation is building for what is expected to be the biggest and most well-attended event since the Festival's founding ten years ago. Celebrated once a year in Silicon Valley, as well as three other locations worldwide, the Vintage Computer Festival is the largest and most prestigious event of its kind, featuring a lecture series, an exhibition of working vintage and antique computers, and a marketplace for traders to buy and sell vintage computers. Collectors from around the world attend this event, which was founded in 1997. The Festival also recognizes its own history this year as it marks its tenth anniversary. This year, attendees will be treated to several historical figures in the computer industry, including Lee Felsenstein (designer of the classic Osborne 1, one of the first portable computers, and the SOL-20, one of the first personal computers), Al Hoagland (designer of the first commercial disk drive), legendary MIT proto-hackers Bill Gosper Steve Russell (author of the first videogame, Spacewar!), Wesley Clark (not the general, but the inventor of the first transistorized computer in the US) and prolific computer book author Lance Leventhal, who wrote dozens of computer self-help books throughout the 1970s and 1980s. One of the keynote sessions at the Festival this year is a panel featuring the engineers who in the early 1960s designed the LINC (Laboratory INstrumentation Computer), which was a revolutionar computer design that some consider to be the first "personal computer". The Festival also features a marketplace for collectors to buy, sell and trade vintage computers. There is also a screening of documentaries and films on both days of the event that have vintage computing or vintage technology themes. Some of the filmmakers will be present to talk about their work and give introductions to their films. There will also be an abstract artist (Christine Finn) on site throughout the event constructing a collaborative artwork based on discarded technology, culminating at a talk she will give on the piece at 3:00pm on Sunday. The Computer History Museum is an ideal location for the Festival as it allows attendees the opportunity to tour the Museum's collection while also attending the lectures and exhibits organized by the VCF. Tours of the Museum's collection will be given throughout the afternoon on each day of the Festival. Special theme tours during the weekend will include "A Brief History of the Internet" and "The History of Video Games", which are both guided by Museum docents. There will also be live demonstrations of ancient mainframe computers that have been painstakingly restored to working condition, including an IBM 1401 mainframe circa 1960 and a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-1 minicomputer circa 1961 running Spacewar!, the first ever videogame, written in 1962. The game's author, Steve Russell, will also be speaking at the Festival. The Computer History Museum is located at 1401 North Shoreline Blvd. in Mountain View, California, just off highway 101. The Vintage Computer Festival opens at 9:30am each day, with first sessions beginning at 10:00am and the exhibition and marketplace opening at 2:00pm each day. The film festival runs from 11:00am to 6:00pm each day. The Festival officially ends at 6:00pm on Sunday. Complete event information including admission, directions to the venue and the event schedule can be found on the VCF website: http://www.vintage.org/2007/main/ Top

2007-10-27 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel I'm trying to document information about the ill-fated IBM OS/2 Warp (PowerPC Edition) release. I have it installed on an IBM PC Power Series 830 machine and I plan to document the installation and general usage, in an upcoming article in VOICE (assuming of course there are any more issues. Almost no one seems to have responded to Christian's plea for help in the last issue). As part of that project I have scanned some of the material that came in the released package, including the CDs (Installation and Applications Sampler), the brief overview manual, the license and the package envelope itself. If anyone is interested in this bit of OS/2 history they can download a zip archive at: ftp://os2voice.org/OS2PPC/OS2PPCpackageScans.zip In the same directory you can also find an IBM redbook on the OS/2 Power PC Edition: ftp://os2voice.org/OS2PPC/sg244630OS2WarpPowerPCEditionAFirstLook.pdf as well as the announcement letter from June 19, 1995 ftp://os2voice.org/os2ppc/OS2PPCAnnounce.html . I tried making a PDF of this announcement letter which is only available as HTML from IBM's site, but OpenOffice 2.0.4 would not display the rightmost words and wouldn't wrap the lines. If anyone knows how to fix that or has a copy as a PDF I'd appreciate the help. I'd very much like to thank Guy Sotomayor for donating a copy of IBM OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) and Hollis Blanchard for donating the IBM PC Power Series 830 system to the OS/2 Museum.
