2007-12-26 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Peter Moylan Web Family Tree (WFT) has just been upgraded to version 1.4. You can get it from http://www.pmoylan.org/pages/os2/wft.html or ftp://ftp.pmoylan.org/software/wft14.zip or search for "wft" on Hobbes. http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=wft The main new feature is the ability to display photographs, but there are several other improvements. WFT is a freeware application to display your family tree as a set of web pages. If you want to see a demonstration, look at my own family tree at http://www.pmoylan.org. This web site also contains an on-line manual for WFT. The source code is available separately, for those who want it, from any of the three download locations mentioned above. As with all reputable software, de-installation is easy if you decide you don't want to keep it. Although an OS/2 web server is a prerequisite, you don't need a public web site if you don't want it. If you don't have a domain name or a fixed IP address, or if you simply want to keep your WFT pages private, you can still run a web server that responds only to the loopback address (localhost = [127.0.0.1]). The web server that I recommend (web/2 by dink) is elementary to install even by novices. If you prefer a different OS/2 web server, WFT will work with that too. LIST OF CHANGES (since version 1.2) Version 1.4 (25 December 2007) Added fixup.cmd to the distribution. Added language files for Dutch (non-expert translation!). More informative web page title. Provision for optional photographs in individual records and family records. Added a "display all databases" option. Added cache control for faster loading. Argument separator changed to '&', although ';' is still allowed for backwards compatibility. Added an "alias" field. Added the Ged2HTML utility. Minor efficiency: deleted trailing spaces in names. Reduced the size of the partial tree for ease of copying the web page into a two-column printed page. Version 1.3 This version was never released. Top
2007-12-26 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Joachim Benjamins Serenity Systems International and Mensys BV are pleased to announce the immediate availability of eComStation 2.0 RC4, The Christmas 2007 release. This release is available to customers with an active Software Subscriptions Services subcription. It adds a few new features and contains a lot of updated drivers and fixes. More details can be found at http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/ !!! WHEN TESTING BETA SOFTWARE, ALWAYS BE SURE TO HAVE A TRIED AND TESTED BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM !!! ** Netware installation from CD1 ** It is now possible to add Netware client support to eComStation, straight from the installation CD. This is especially important for those customers that have a Netware networking environment. ** Preboot harddisk integrity check ** There are several situations which may cause installation problems with LVM in the install process. In this release, it is possible to disable the integrity check at page 2 (miscellaneous) of the eComStation installer preboot menu. ** Harddisk volume resizing ** This version has a custom DFSee engine that enables reliable RESIZING of FAT32 and NTFS filesystems to allow shrinking an existing Windows installation to make room for eComStation on the same system. The DFSee engine included in RC3 is at level 9.04. The GUI to this tool has been updated and is now using a graphical interface. To invoke it, please select 'Paritition Resizing Tool' from the Installation Volume Manager which can be called during installation (choose 'New Volume' to start MiniLVM). ** Bootable JFS ** This release of eComStation contains the option to install the operating system on a JFS volume. The advantage of doing this is that the amount of diskcache is only limited by system memory (typically 10% of available memory is assigned) This increased cache size gives a huge gain in overall system performance. ** Genmac 2.20 RC1 ** This package provides generic driver support for several network interface cards under OS/2 and eComStation. Moreover, Genmac is enabled to support WPA encryption with the Wireless LAN Monitor 3.x or better. Genmac and the Wireless LAN monitor will be installed when the appropriate hardware is detected by the installer. If it is not detected, you can manually select the driver in the network installation dialog. Version 2.20 RC1 of GenMac supports the NETBEUI protocol. Version 2.20 RC1 of GenMac now offers suspend & resume on a limited set of network adapters (when used in conjunction with ACPI) - this is an *experimental* feature. ** ACPI 3.05 & APM 1.20 ** Support for ACPI is available in this release. The current version is 3.05. ACPI will be automatically enabled if appropriate hardware is detected. You can manually enable or disable ACPI support at page 4 (USB & ACPI) of the eComStation installer preboot menu. ** multicore CPU support ** This release supports the installation of eComStation on a MultiCore CPU computer. This includes Intel Core Duo , Core2 Duo and AMD 64 X2. To enable it, you can do so in the ACPI Wizard that is launched from the Post Installation tasks at the end of the installation. Alternatively you can start the ACPI Wizard at any time from the install/remove folder in the Local System folder on the desktop. ** eComStation Virtual File System (Samba client support) ** Samba is a SMB/CIFS protocols file and print sharing server/client set originally made for UNIX world to cooperate with corresponding Windows and OS/2 servers or clients. eComStation has a native implementation of SMB/CIFS server/client set - IBM LAN Manager and IBM Peer. These products have not been recently updated and may have some compatibility issues with modern Windows SMB/CIFS implementations. Serenity Systems International has reached an agreement with Blueprint Software Works for the inclusion of the 'eComStation Virtual File System' driver which provides support for Samba Client. A small GUI utility for the configuration of Samba shares is provided. == REPORTING == To tell us your findings, please create a report at: http://www.ecomstation.com/support/rc4report/ You are also welcome to join the TestTeam if you want to discuss this beta and future developments. See http://ewiki.ecomstation.nl/TestTeam for more details. == SOFTWARE SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES == Please note that although some subscriptions have expired by now, you are not required to purchase a renewal to obtain the GA version of eComStation 2.0. If you want to try this RC2 release however, you are encouraged to renew your Software Subscription Services contract. More details can be found at http://www.ecomstation.com/subscription/ Enjoy this release and we wish you a victorious 2008! Serenity Systems International Top
2007-12-27 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley Hi All, Today I uploaded several new and updated OS/2 & eComStation ports to my site at http://os2ports.smedley.info * Ghostscript v8.61 OS/2 builds have previously been supplied directly from http://www.ghostscript.com - however an OS/2 build of v8.61 has not yet appeared, so I've made my own. Note that this build uses libc - previous previous builds used (I think) EMX - any feedback is appreciated. Note that it also includes support for the CUPS raster format, and libcups.dll is required (included in the zip). * Openldap v2.3.40 Updated to the latest source available from http://www.openldap.org * Perl v5.10.0 Updated to the latest source available from http://www.perl.org This has had very limited tested and all feedback is appreciated - current test results are: Failed 43 tests out of 1370, 96.86% okay. I'll try and improve the test results based on available time and feedback from users. * Subversion Updated to the latest source from http://subversion.tigris.org/ As always, feedback is appreciated to paulDESPAM@DESPAMsmedley.id.au, bugs can be reported at http://mantis.smedley.info, and monetary support is welcome via the links at http://os2ports.smedley.info Cheers, Paul Smedley Adelaide, Australia Top
2007-12-28 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Kim Foder Today I have released version 2.0 of WhatsOn. Some of the more significant changes in this release are : A new tile set has been added. New menu item, Load last tile set at startup, has been added to the options menu. If this option is checked (and saved using save all options) the selected tile set will be used at startup. New menu item, Load tile set, has been added to the options menu. This allows the selection of a tile set different from the default set. An error making it difficult to save the registration has been corrected. See read.me, or the WhatsOn homepage, for more information. For those who don't know : This game is highly inspired by the old DOS game Sherlock. The game is one of logic deduction, and are (at least in the original version) very addictive ! You can find the game via my homepage at http://hjem.tele2adsl.dk/kimfoder under programs. Or you can go directly to the homepage of the game, sponsored by os2world.com, at http://www.os2world.com/whatson . If you try the game, please let me know what you think. This theme was inspired by the MacOS Drawingboard theme by Apple Japan and uses intersecting, fading lines to create the look of engineering pencil sketches. The theme bundles support for the Window Theme Manager, Icon Theme Manager, eStyler, the Scheme Palette, and Animated Mouse Pointers. Updates: - Added two more sets of animated mouse pointers, one based on the same style as the icons, one based on drawing tools - Replaced lockup icon with icon donated by Alex Taylor The theme comes as a WarpIN package that includes an option to display a screenshot prior to any installation activities to help you decide whether you want to give it a try or not. 2007-12-31 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Chris Wohlgemuth Hi everyone, WPS-Wizard V0.6.0 ( http://svn.netlabs.org/wps-wizard/wiki ) comes with an advanced icon engine for using PNG images as icons. Icons can be created on the fly e.g. by overlaying several images to form a new one. See the screenshots page for some examples: http://svn.netlabs.org/wps-wizard/wiki/WpsWizardScreenshots Now a first tutorial is available for those of you who want to create their own icon themes: http://svn.netlabs.org/wps-wizard/wiki/IconTutorial This tutorial only scratches the surface of the features of the icon engine but is a good start and will help you to create about 90% of your icons. It is also helpful when you want to change one of the icons coming with the current themes (there is an 'Edit' button on the icon page, you know...) or intend to add more. More is about to come but will need some time. To learn more about the engine go here: http://svn.netlabs.org/wps-wizard/wiki/IconEngine Regards and a happy new year Chris Wohlgemuth Top
2007-12-31 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley Hi All, I've just added an OS/2 & eComStation build of Virtualbox to my site at http://os2ports.smedley.info innotek VirtualBox is a family of powerful x86 virtualization products for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). Please note that whilst I'm interested in feedback on this build - I really don't have the time to debug problems - all I've done is compile the code that exists in the Virtualbox repository on OS/2. Many thanks to Yoda for providing the readme.os2 - please read this for details on what works/doesn't and how to use Virtualbox/2 Please enjoy - and Happy New Year! Cheers, Paul. Top
