2008-02-09 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Andy Willis The Board of Directors of Warpstock Corporation is now accepting bids from groups or individuals wishing to host Warpstock 2008. Groups or individuals considering hosting Warpstock 2008 should submit a letter of their intent to host this event by e-mail to: bids AT warpstock DOT org. Information about the bid process and the requirements for hosting a Warpstock event will be found on the Warpstock web site at http://www.warpstock.org/staticpages/index.php?page=bidproc and http://www.warpstock.org/staticpages/index.php?page=BSO. This letter of intent should contain a list of the individuals involved, the city or area in which the event would be held, and the suggested time of year for the event. The letter of intent may contain any additional information about the proposed bid that the team wishes to share. It should also include the benefits of holding the event in their suggested location. This letter does not need to be in great detail about the proposed event, but rather, a commitment from the group about entering into the bid process. The Board of Directors will remain in close contact with the Teams throughout the entire bid process, including final site selection. The Board of Directors contains a number of past Event Team members and will be available to provide support for any group wishing to submit a proposal. Now is the time to start! Let's make Warpstock 2008 a most memorable Warpstock! Warpstock Corporation is a Virginia corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock web site: http://www.warpstock.org Top
2008-02-09 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Peter Weilbacher The OS/2 version of SeaMonkey 1.1.8 was released together with the official release of the other platforms. As a significant improvement from previous 1.1.x releases it now supports SVG and the HTML canvas extension, which was previously only the case for my enhanced builds. It still requires Innotek libc-0.5.1 to run. Once the mirrors have synced you can find it on http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/index.html until then the links are listed on http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/releases/ Best wishes, Peter. 2008-02-09 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Iron Spring An ALPHA version of the new Iron Spring PL/I compiler for OS/2 is now available at: http://www.iron-spring.com This is a fairly rough alpha. It works well enough to compile itself and its run-time library, but is missing many features not immediately required to achieve a working compiler. The "release notes" included in the package document some, but not all, of the current restrictions. The 1.0 release is expected to be roughly a "Subset G" compiler. Eventually the compiler will handle the full PL/I language plus extensions from other compilers. Following the OS/2 version a Linux version is planned. OS/2 programmers familiar with PL/I might be interested in experimenting with the current version. Subsequent major versions will be announced as they become available. Top

2008-02-10 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel http://desktoplinux.com/news/NS7822082064.html By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols "Feb. 08, 2008 Analysis -- Get over it. We're never going to see OS/2 open-sourced. If you want to run OS/2 today, the closest you're going to get is Serenity System's eComStation 2.0 RC4. But, it just might be possible for Linux desktop users to get one of OS/2's best features: SOM (System Object Model)." This was picked up as a thread on slashdot as well: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/09/2041204 "Should IBM's SOM/DSOM Be Open Sourced?" with many comments. Top

2008-02-13 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/ February 12, 2008 Firefox 3 beta 3 has been released. "This is a BETA release of Firefox 3, the next generation browser based on Mozilla's Gecko 1.9 platform. It should be used for testing and feedback purposes only. Take a moment to review the information and suggestions in the README.TXT file included in the archive. Some Extensions (Add-ons) may not yet be updated to work with Firefox 3. If you are looking to add new Extensions, you can check the Add-ons site using the link below to see if they are compatible with version 3." Zipfile: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0b3/contrib/firefox-3.0b3.en-US.os2.zip please take note the ReadMe which lists the major OS/2 specific bugs: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0b3/contrib/firefox-3.0b3.en-US.os2.ReadMe and the Release Notes: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0b3/releasenotes/ Requires a libc0.6.3 based version of the GCC runtime library. http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/#gccrtl The following helpful information is courtesy of Sander Nyman: NOTE: This release requires the C runtime DLLs from Innotek. In the unlikely event that you do not already have version 0.6.3 installed, it is available with an installer here: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0_6_3-csd3.wpi NOTE: This release requires IPLUGINW.DLL to use the Java and Flash plugins. Available here: http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi or here: http://download.innotek.de/javaos2/mozilla/ipluginw20050915.xpi NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same time (or ANY other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level, or a mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a second Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this limitation, and use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, Kompozer, etc., is with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set up. To make life even easier, I HIGHLY recommend that you download & use the Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with coordinating your web browser with your email client for "mailto" links, etc. You can find it here: http://7cities.net/~mckinnis/code/iai1050.exe Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/run_060.zip Firefox extensions (add-ons) that add new functionality are available here: https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox Firefox themes (skins) are available here: https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/?application=firefox For release notes, and a list of new features, follow this link: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0b2/releasenotes/ The official Warpzilla homepage can be found here: http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/ If you have questions, or just want the latest, greatest tips for Firefox, Thunderbird, & Seamonkey, Steve Wendt's excellent "Tips For Warpzilla" page can be found here: http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/Warpzilla.html For Firefox "Tips & Tricks", see: http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_6.html And finally, if you still have questions, or just want to participate in a Mozilla for OS/2 discussion forum, the Warpzilla newsgroup can be found here: news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2 Top
