Net: Hobbes incoming information

2008-12-16
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Ian Manners

Hi Everyone,

For those that upload files, the system used at hobbes is CASE sensitive.
Please ensure all the text matches between the file name and the template
file that goes with it. (the filenames, not the contents of the template)

Also, if replacing an earlier file, make sure that the case listed matches
the file listed found in the archive.

The easiest option is to ensure all file names are lowercase.

The Hobbes maintainers have been working on re enabling file renaming in
the incoming directory, unfortunetly due to the FTP server software they
have to use [which is very secure], and site policy, there are limits as to
what can be done.

>From Debi at hobbes.nmsu.edu

"As far as uploading and renaming goes, we are using vsftp which though it
is secure, it does not allow limiting the renames. to work around this
issue we have set a chown to disable the rename after a short period of
time. It is our compromise on the rename.

I agree that it may cause havok but permitting renames has been an issue
the Hobbes community seems to desire, as we have had a lot of complaints
about not permitting renaming."

Be aware that in testing renaming is only available for a few minutes after
uploading a file.

Please also be aware that the HTTP URL's have changed from the previous
server that hobbes was hosted on.

Cheers
Ian Manners

SW: Enhanced Mozilla applications (Gecko 1.8.1.19 release)

2008-12-18
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Peter Weilbacher

New versions of my enhanced Mozilla based apps are available now via
http://pmw-warpzilla.sf.net/

- SeaMonkey 1.1.14 (PmW)
- PmW-Fx 2.0.0.19 (last release of PmW-Fx! see below)
- PmW-Tb 2.0.0.19

They are all based on Gecko 1.8.1.19 on the date of 2008-12-12 and built
from the exact same sources. They correspond directly to the respective
official releases of SeaMonkey, Firefox, and hopefully Thunderbird.
All applications need libc063.dll to run.

This Gecko 1.8.1.19-based release picks up all the changes done by Mozilla
since my Gecko 1.8.1.18 release, i.e. between 2008-10-30 and 2008-12-02.
This includes fixes for approximately 9 security issues, 2 to 4 of which
are rated critical (the exact numbers depend on the product).

No OS/2 specific changes were done since the last release.

Note1: Firefox 2.0.0.20 that will be released very soon only fixes a
Windows problem; I will not rebuild just to get a new version number.

Note2: because Mozilla does not support Firefox 2 any longer this will very
likely be the last release of PmW-Fx! I will try to continue to provide
PmW-Tb and SeaMonkey (PmW) as time allows and official releases are done.
But for a standalone browser, please look at Firefox 3.0.5 or later.

Note3: If you have specific reasons why you haven't updated to Firefox
3.0.x yet, please open a bug on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org or post in the
newsgroup mozilla.dev.ports.os2. Perhaps there is something that I don't
know about and that can be easily improved.

Peter.

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Eugene Gorbunoff

eComStation may attract new users if it's commercially successful.

OS/2 (eComStation) is alive while people are using and improving the
system. The developers of solutions ensure long life for our operating
system because computers with OS/2 make money for their customers year by
year. The developers bring new industrial technologies to OS/2, feed
support service, fill OS/2 with unique features to keep the solutions
competitive.

What's new: homepage of solutions -- http://ecomstation.ru/solutions
* Plant floor automation systems, Company: Automation ONSPEC Software
* All commercial paging in St.Petersburg (Russia) is based on eComStation
solution
* Railroad in Italy: All the ticketing kiosks and machines are using OS/2
Warp
* The New York City subway replaced Warp 4 with eComStation on their
ticket selling kiosks some time ago.
* We added new section: "Airports", please help us find the facts of
WSeB usage in the airports (USA)

Why should you write the story today?
* You should do this to protect your investments made into OS/2 platform.
* OS/2 users are located in different countries and cities. They will
read the story because of OS/2 word :) And spread the information about
your company and products among own colleagues.
* The developer of the operating system will get information about your
requirements and improve OS to satisfy them.
* Your story gives stimulus to thousands of users, developers and companies.
* It's easy. Solution story is based on usual product flyer.

Your participation:
* The developers may join the development of Point-of-sale toolkit --
http://ecomstation.ru/projects/developer/?action=pos
* Businessmen - publish new story for Solutions page
* Tech.specialist -- write the story about eComStation in your company.

Where to collect solutions? www.ecomstation.ru site is hosting Solutions
list since 2002. Yyou can publish german, dutch, english texts there.

How to write Solutions story? Take the flyer of your product, add
Introduction, add one-two paragraphs about advantages of OS/2 usage, add 2
advertisement photos/screenshots, 2 screenshots of back-end demonstating
usage of OS/2.

SW: cURL port updated to 7.19.2

2008-12-20
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

Paul Smedley has updated his port of cURL to 7.19.2.
http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/

cURL is a command line tool for transferring files with URL syntax,
supporting FTP, FTPS, TFTP, HTTP, HTTPS, TELNET, DICT, FILE and LDAP. curl
supports SSL certificates, HTTP POST, HTTP PUT, FTP uploading, HTTP form
based upload, proxies, cookies, user+password authentication (Basic,
Digest, NTLM, Negotiate, kerberos...), file transfer resume, proxy
tunneling and a busload of other useful tricks.

Curl is free and open software that compiles under a wide variety of
operating systems. Curl exists thanks to efforts from many authors.

The main Curl website is at http://curl.haxx.se/.

Curl v7.19.2 - updated 20081220
http://download.smedley.info/curl-7.19.2-os2-20081220.zip

REQUIRES: libc063.dll - ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.3-csd3.zip

Please let Paul know if you find this software useful. He needs user
feedback to continue work on these projects. He maintains a bug tracker
for many projects at http://mantis.smedley.info It just requires a simple
registration.

If you'd like to help support continued development of this project (and
many others) for OS/2 & eComStation, please consider making a donation
either via Paypal using the link on Paul's website, or using the Mensys
Online Store http://www.mensys.net/os2ports/
