2008-10-02 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Eugene Gorbunoff Why to use ACPI for eComStation? You should install ACPI for eComStation to: Common (Notebooks, servers, barebones): * to initialize PC (the devices are not initialized on boot without ACPI), * to use multi-core CPU (Core Duo, AMD X2). Especially, if you want run computer in APIC mode, * device drivers for eComStation depend on ACPI, * ACPI provides information about the computer to drivers, applications and system information utilities. Notebook, barebone: * to control power management (suspend/resume/poweroff) * to reduce power consumption For developer: * The main purpose of the driver is to provide ACPI interface to applied developers. ACPI 3.11 is released, download new version from BETAZONE -- http://betazone.ecomstation.nl please pay attention to node resources: A) Check your system (util\acpi-test.cmd) if PC doesn't boot with ACPI driver. 2008-10-02 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel Paul Smedley has updated his OS/2 port of the GNU C Compiler. http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/ "Mainly due to the fact that GCC 3.3.5 (which is what is currently used by kLibc) is becoming too old to build the latest Mozilla trunk code, I started working on building a newer version of GCC. I've started with v3.4.6 - as the thought was that the amount of changed between 3.3.5 and 3.4.6 would be comparatively small compared with aiming for the 'latest' GCC (currently 4.3.2). The current binary has been used to build several projects successfully - ie rsync, Apache2, MySQL, Firefox 3.0-cvs, Ghostscript, ffmpeg amongst others Known issues: * strange warnings about make cycles when linking * currently installs into \usr\local not usr Changes since 20th September build - Built with high-memory support enabled - Added support for 'fastcall' calling convention (fixes warnings when building mozilla) - statically link stdc++ to avoid using the older libstdc++ contained within libc063" Download: http://download.smedley.info/gcc-3.4.6-os2-20080930.zip http://download.smedley.info/gcc-3.4.6-os2-20080930-patch.zip REQUIRES: libc063.dll - ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.3-csd3.zip Please let Paul know if you find this software useful. He needs user feedback to continue work on these projects. He maintains a bug tracker for many projects at http://mantis.smedley.info It just requires a simple registration. If you'd like to help support continued development of this project (and many others) for OS/2 & eComStation, please consider making a donation either via Paypal using the link on Paul's website, or using the Mensys Online Store http://www.mensys.net/os2ports/ Top
2008-10-03 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley Hi All, A preliminary port of GCC 4.0.4 is now available. Seems to do most of the things that GCC 3.4.6 can do - EXCEPT build Mozilla - that fails build javascript with some 'declaration of C function xxxxx conflicts with previous declaration yyyyyyy' errors to do with js_static_assert that I need to investigate. Binary & patches available from http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/index.php?page=gcc Top

This version has been compiled to run on IBM OS/2 and eComStation as a native application. This release replaces OpenOffice.org version 2.0.4. It is available to anyone with a current OpenOffice.org Support Agreement for eComStation and OS/2, via their download-area at the Mensys Online Shop. http://www.mensys.net/login/ ** Features ** Support for XWP/eWPS sliding menu hilite (requires XWorkPlace 1.0.8 or eCS 2.0 RC4 or higher) Support for clipboard bitmap formats and unicode text. To enable these features, the Internet Application Integration tool must be installed and configured for your browser. A more complete list of changes in this version of OpenOffice.org 2.4.0 can be found at: http://development.openoffice.org/releases/2.4.0.html ** Requirements ** - At least one language pack is required to complete installation. - UniClip is required to complete installation. - LibC 0.6.3 is required to complete installation. - Innotek Font Engine is required to run OpenOffice.org 2.4 for eComStation and OS/2. - this installation will not overwrite existing installations, you can use it alongside OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 and OpenOffice.org 2.0.4, however it may be advisable to remove previous 2.4 profiles from your home directory. - installation should preferably be done on a JFS volume, as it may run slow otherwise. The installation target volume must support long filenames. - installation takes around 400 MB of drivespace. - this build is based on the 2.4.0 m12 sourcecode of OpenOffice.org. - For better rendering of the GUI font, it is suggested to install Workplace Sans TrueType font.
