++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Peter Moylan

FtpServer (an FTP daemon) is being re-released because of a small bug in
the Setup program in version 1.32: it was not possible to toggle the "log
to screen" option. The repaired version can be fetched from

SW: GCC 4.3.2 news - Firefox builds (and runs) with it

2008-10-08
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Paul Smedley

Hi All,

I managed to get some form of dllexport support working in GCC 4.3.2 today,
and successfully built Firefox 3.0-cvs using it
(http://smedley.info/mozilla.jpg) It required just a couple of extras
changes above those required to build using 3.4.6

There are still known issues with my current GCC 4.3.2 build:
- precompiled headers do not currently work
- no thread support in gcc.exe as I forgot to --enable-threads when running
configure - this will be fixed in the next drop
- for some strange reason, gcc fails to produce an executable where there
are libs added on the command line that are not required, ie
gcc -Zexe -Zomf -s conftest.c -lgcc FAILS
gcc -Zexe -Zomf -s conftest.c WORKS
- no support yet for the GOMP multiprocessor library
- link warning when using -Zomf - emxomf will require updating to deal with
the new stabs types, but according to Knut, the warnings can be safely ignored

This build hasn't had huge amounts of testing, but has been used to build
Scribus, Firefox 3.0cvs and ffmpeg successfully. Any feedback on things
that work/don't work vs GCC 3.3.5 would be appreciated!

The binary itself can be downloaded from
http://download.smedley.info/gcc-4.3.2-os2-20081008.zip Please also keep
checking http;//os2ports.smedley.info for newer builds.

Feedback appreciated :)

Cheers,

Paul.

This release has a few bug-fixes, several usability enhancements and some
new SCRIPT built-in functions.

The distribution now contains a 'proftemp.dfs' profile template. It can be
customized and renamed to 'profile.dfs' by the user. The readme file that
comes with the ISO download documents how you can use the 'ikey' program to
import your own customized 'profile.dfs' into the ISO before burning it.

DFSee is a very powerful disk-utility with disk partitioning, filesystem
and disk analysis, file recovery, UNDELETE for HPFS, JFS, and NTFS,
resizing and smart imaging or cloning.

SW: Ghostscript v8.63 updated

2008-10-11
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

Paul Smedley has updated Ghostscript to version 8.63.
http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/

"Ghostscript is an interpreter for the PostScript (TM) language. A
PostScript interpreter usually takes as input a set of graphics commands.
The output is usually a page bitmap which is then sent to an output device
such as a printer or display. PostScript is embedded in many printers.

Ghostscript has several main uses:

1. Display a PostScript file (avoid killing trees).
2. Display a PostScript file to decide if you really need to print it
(reduce the number of trees killed).
3. Print a PostScript file to a non-PostScript printer (kill more trees).

History:

* Necessary device support for CUPS is included - be sure to modify
path entry in /cups/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster if upgrading CUPS
* Added jbig support - fixes some PDFs that previously showed up blank
* Compiled with GCC 4.3.2"

SW: GNU C Compiler (GCC) 4.3.2 port updated

2008-10-13
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

GCC 4.3.2 is now available FROM Paul Smedley's web site.
http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/

"Mainly due to the fact that GCC 3.3.5 (which is what is currently used by
kLibc) is becoming too old to build the latest Mozilla trunk code, I
started working on building a newer version of GCC.

I've started with v3.4.6 - as the thought was that the amount of changed
between 3.3.5 and 3.4.6 would be comparatively small compared with aiming
for the 'latest' GCC (currently 4.3.2). I now have builds of 3.4.6, 4.0.4
and 4.3.2

The current binary of GCC 4.3.2 has been used to build several projects
successfully - ie rsync, Apache2, MySQL, Firefox 3.0-cvs, Ghostscript,
ffmpeg amongst others

Known Issues with the current 4.3.2 release (2008-10-12b)
- no support yet for the GOMP multiprocessor library
- link warning when using -Zomf - emxomf will require updating to deal
with the new stabs types, but according to Knut, these warnings can be
safely ignored, and only affect debugging

Updates since original build - the date in brackets reflects the first
build that contained the fix
- Added threading support (2008-10-11 build)
- fixed problem with stdcall that produced errors like ':75: Error:
invalid character '_' in mnemonic' (2008-10-12 build)
- fixed (hopefully) 'internal compiler error' crashes when -fPIC is used
(2008-10-12 build)
- Added support for precompiled headers based on cygwin code (untested)
(2008-10-12b build)
- Fixed 'gcc conftest.c -lgcc' produced -lgcc.exe (20081012b build)

Problems with this build can be reported using my bug tracker at
http://mantis.smedley.info "

Current binaries:

GCC 4.3.2 2008-10-12b release

GCC 4.3.2 2008-10-11 release patches

Your machine doesn't work correctly with eComStation? Take it to Warpstock
Europe! The Mensys team will attend to the problem on-site. In case an
issue cannot be resolved during the event, debug information will be
collected for later processing.

To improve the handling compared to Warpstock Europe 2007, the team will be
available 4 hours a day in the exhibition room at fixed times. The exact
times are not available yet since they depend on the presentation schedule
which is still under way.

Please note that due to the ongoing development, the service can only be
offered for eComStation 2.0 RC5. Alas, installation from USB CD-ROM drives
and on ASUS EEE PCs cannot be supported.

If you are going to take the offer, please be sure to contact Mensys at
support@ecomstation.com prior to the event and include a detailed problem
report.

SW: smplayer port

++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Silvan Scherrer

As most of you probably noted, there was no update since long to the
WarpVision project.
Due to the fact, that Warpvision was mostly a GUI to MPlayer, we looked for
alternatives. We found SMplayer to be a good candidate to port, as it's QT
based. We used the last QT 3 version of SMplayer and ported it over to
OS/2, eCS. You can no get the smplayer at netlabs ftp.

"These releases are not for production use, but for developers and testers

Please send all comments and general discussion to the news group

I have made a package of "Shredder" alpha 3 (the current alpha of the next
version of Thunderbird) available. As usual, it's linked on the Warpzilla
Ports page (http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/) or from
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/3.0a3/contrib

Please file bugs for problems, especially if you find a problem that
doesn't exist on other platforms.

I haven't really followed feature updates but there was a lot of
cross-platform stuff (but I don't think we added anything new for OS/2).

Cheers,
Peter.
