2008-10-16 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net> Mozilla's Firefox 3.1b1 (Official) for OS/2 has been released. Firefox 3 is Mozilla's next generation web browser based on the Gecko 1.9.1 platform. This is the first beta level release of 3.1, so all the usual cautions apply. Known problems in this release include: "Media support support is not yet activated on OS/2 so HTML5 and elements do not work". For more known problems, information and suggestions, take a moment to review the README.TXT file included in the archive. You can download it here:http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.1b1/contrib/firefox-3.1b1.en-US.os2.zip NOTE: This release requires the C runtime DLLs from Innotek. In the unlikely event that you do not already have version 0.6.3 installed, it is available with an installer here:ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0_6_3-csd3.wpi NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same time (or ANY other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level, or a mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a second Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this limitation, and use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, Kompozer, etc., is with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set up. To make life even easier, I HIGHLY recommend that you download & use the Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with coordinating your web browser with your email client for "mailto" links, etc. You can find it here:http://7cities.net/~mckinnis/code/iai1090.exe Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility:http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/run_075.zip Firefox extensions (add-ons) that add new functionality are available here:https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox Firefox themes (skins) are available here:https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/?application=firefox For release notes, and a list of new features, follow this link:http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.1b1/releasenotes/ The official Warpzilla homepage can be found here:http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/ If you have questions, or just want the latest, greatest tips for Firefox, Thunderbird, & Seamonkey, Steve Wendt's excellent "Tips For Warpzilla" page can be found here:http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/Warpzilla.html For Firefox "Tips & Tricks", see:http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_6.html And finally, if you still have questions, or just want to participate in a Mozilla for OS/2 discussion forum, the Warpzilla newsgroup can be found here: news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2 Regards, Sander

2008-10-17 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net> Robert Blair has released an update to his Sudoku game for OS/2. The game acts as a "whiteboard" for those insanely popular Sodoku puzzles, and is considerably easier (and a lot more fun) to use than paper and pencil. A sample puzzle is included to help you get acquainted with the program. This game is VERY well done, with features that include a timer, a help file, a Warpin installation, and even a REXX program (requires WGET) to download the daily Sudoku puzzles from the "Sudoku Online" web site. It is available on Hobbes, currently in the Incoming directory:http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/incoming/sudoku_v1_03.wpi Sander

The software is released under an Apache/BSD-style open source license. The main Subversion website is at http://subversion.tigris.org/ New in the 1.5.3 build for OS/2: * Updated to 1.5.3 source code * Switched to GCC 4.3.2 as a compiler" Subversion 1.5.3 - updated 20081017 http://download.smedley.info/subversion-1.5.3-os2-20081017.zip REQUIRES: libc063.dll - ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.3-csd3.zip Please let Paul know if you find this software useful. He needs user feedback to continue work on these projects. He maintains a bug tracker for many projects at http://mantis.smedley.info It just requires a simple registration. If you'd like to help support continued development of this project (and many others) for OS/2 & eComStation, please consider making a donation either via Paypal using the link on Paul's website, or using the Mensys Online Store http://www.mensys.net/os2ports/

2008-10-19 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Sander Nyman <2sanderDESPAM@DESPAMsbcglobal.net> SDL M.A.M.E. v0.128 has been released. M.A.M.E. stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. It is capable of playing video arcade era games like Pacman, Space Invaders and over 3,000 other classic games. The emulator requires ROMs of the original arcade machines which must be provided by the user. No ROMs are included in the executable. A quick search on Google will lead you to sources for ROMs. This SDL port of MAME is by KO Myung-Hun and based on the latest version available. It is STRONGLY recommended that you view the README file included in the archiver BEFORE using M.A.M.E. Ko gives specific options that must be used to work around known issues. SDL M.A.M.E. is currently in the Incoming directory of Hobbes:http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/incoming/sdlmame0128_os2.zip Sander

2008-10-23 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Franz Bakan "GOCR is an optical character recognition program, released under the GNU General Public License. It reads images in many formats (pnm, pbm, pgm, ppm, some pcx and tga image files (or PNM from stdin); if pnm-tools installed and running linux-like system you can also use pnm.gz, pnm.bz2, png, jpg, tiff, gif, bmp and others) and outputs a text file." I just noticed that sources of gocr are at level 0.45 in the meantime. So I compiled the sources for OS/2. Binaries available as usual from http://www.fbakan.de Have fun Franz
