2008-06-08 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Gregg Young XWPWidgets 0.7.2 has been released. This fixes the F1 crash that occurs with some applications(PMView) when the REXX widget dlls are loaded. It also includes two new REXX widgets (found in the source largely untested). 2008-06-08 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Mark Dodel According to Paul Smedley's UNIX ports for OS/2 and eComStation website http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/ CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) has been updated again to a preview of 1.3.7. Also includes GPL Ghostscript 8.62 and Gutenprint 5.1.98.2 which were the same in the last release. More information can be found at http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups/wiki/CupsPort The main CUPS site (non-OS/2) is http://www.cups.org/ "CUPS provides a portable printing layer for UNIX®-based operating systems. It was developed by Easy Software Products and is now owned and maintained by Apple Inc. to promote a standard printing solution. It is the standard printing system in Mac OS® X and most Linux® distributions. CUPS uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP") as the basis for managing print jobs and queues and adds network printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing options to support real-world printing." DOWNLOAD [Note: This is a 51 MB file. And at that it only includes the language Gutenprint ppd files.] http://download.smedley.info/cups-1.3.7-gplgs-8.62-gutenprint-5.1.98.2-os2-20080608.zip There is also a much smaller download of just the files (7.5 MB) that have changed since the last release http://download.smedley.info/cups-1.3.7-os2-20080608.zip REQUIREMENTS: Ghostscript and Gutenprint require the LIBC 0.6.3 runtime dll from ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.3-csd3.zip CUPS is built using a custom libc064x.dll - a copy of which can be downloaded from http://download.smedley.info/libc064x.zip CHANGES since the last release: 1) Updated to CUPS 1.3.7 2) Fixed a problem in pstops.exe that prevented the last page of OS/2 generated postscript printing There is a eCups mailing list at Netlabs which can be viewed via Gmane at http://news.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.ecups.devel Please, please post feedback. A list of printers that Gutenprint supports can be found at http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3 Further details on using CUPS on OS/2 or eComStation can be found at http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups or in the readme.os2 file in the download package. 2008-06-11 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Paul Smedley Hi All, So far I've received only a handful of reports on people's experiences with CUPS on OS/2 which I find somewhat surprising and frustrating given how critical this is to making our beloved platform viable into the future in terms of printing support. I thought I'd try and answer a few questions that i'm guessing people might have. What is CUPS? Cups Is basically a framework that translates postscript data into a printers native format using Gutenprint and Ghostscript then sends it to the printer. It is the printing system used on Mac OSX and most linux distros. [Moderator note: CUPS is so important to Apple that they actually bought the rights to it and not only pay to maintain it now, but have kept it open source.] Why is it important for OS/2? IBM used to update the omni drivers to support 'consumer' types printers but these updates stopped some years ago. it is now near impossible to find an affordable printer that will work with OS/2 or eCS. Can I print from native applications? Not yet! But this will be the next focus once the foundation has proven to be solid. Why do I need to print using a lpd port when my printer used usb? Printing directly to a usb printer is planned - this will most likely happen after printing from OS/2 apps is working as its really not that hard to install lpd. Why should I test when it doesn't even let me print yet? firstly, it helps validate that the framework works on a range of systems and printers. Secondly, providing feedback helps let the people working on the project know that people are interested and provides encouragement to continue working on the project. Thanks in advance, Paul. Top
2008-06-11 ++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Iron Spring Software 09 Jun, 2008: A new ALPHA version of the Iron Spring PL/I compiler for OS/2 is now available for free download at: http://www.iron-spring.com This is the sixth alpha version. It is still missing many features, but is working well enough to compile itself and its runtime library. The "release notes" included in the package document some, but not all, of the current restrictions. The 1.0 release is expected to be roughly a "Subset G" compiler. Eventually the compiler will handle the full PL/I language plus extensions from other compilers. Following the OS/2 version a Linux version is planned. Version 0.6a implements the %REPLACE preprocessor statement, adds the 'FROMALIEN' procedure option to allow calls to PL/I from other languages, and packages the runtime library as a DLL and import library in addition to the previously distributed static object library.
