SW: Firefox 3.0

2008-06-17
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++

From: Mark Dodel

Peter Weilbacher has released an OS/2 version of Firefox 3.0.

http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=23974

"Firefox 3 is the most major Mozilla browser release since the launch of
Firefox 2 in October 2006 and represents the culmination of over three
years work (development on Firefox 3 began before even Firefox 1.5 came
out). According to the press release announcing Firefox 3, the new version
has over 15,000 improvements."

Not sure if OS/2 downloads count toward it but "With the launch of Firefox
3, Mozilla is hoping to set a Guinness World Record for the most downloads
in twenty-four hours. The number of downloads so far can be tracked at
http://downloadcounter.sj.mozilla.com. Only full, completed downloads count
and users have until 11:16am Pacific Daylight Time on Wednesday (6:16pm
UTC/GMT) to make a participating download."

Download Firefox 3.0 :

Requires: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.3-csd3.zip

See included readme.txt for minimum hardware/software requirements.

Following information courtesy of Sander Nyman :

NOTE: To have both Firefox, & Thunderbird in use at the same time (or ANY
other Mozilla app) they *MUST* be at the SAME version level, or a
mismatched DLL will still be in memory when you attempt to start a second
Mozilla based program. The easiest way to get around this limitation, and
use DIFFERENT version levels of Firefox, Thunderbird, Kompozer, etc., is
with Rich Walsh's Run! utility. It is tiny, and VERY easy to set up. To
make life even easier, I HIGHLY recommend that you download & use the
Internet Application Integration utility from Chuck McKinnis, which
actually contains the Run! utility, and sets it up for you, along with
coordinating your web browser with your email client for "mailto" links,
etc. You can find it here:

http://7cities.net/~mckinnis/code/iai1050.exe

Or, if you'd rather do it yourself, here is the Run! utility:

SW: Update on Firefox 3.0

From: Mark Dodel

I should have read the entire README.txt before sending the announcement.
This release still does not have printing working.

From the README.txt:

"Known Problems of the OS/2 version
----------------------------------

Cross-platform problems are usually listed in the release notes of each
milestone release.

- Printing to normal OS/2 printer queues had to be disabled. It was slow even
for simple pages and used huge amounts of RAM, so that in most cases the
application crashed, see
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=415522.
While the queues are still displayed in the printing dialog, any printing
operation will instead create a PDF file. By default this file is placed on
the Desktop, with the name Firefox__
